MOVIE REVIEW: The Grey

This movie review of "The Grey" was written by guest blogger Liz Parker...

The Grey could be used as an anti-tourism ad for Alaska: your plane will crash in the snowy wilderness somewhere and you will get eaten by wolves ... welcome! However, the film was better than I expected - even if it's grisly and bloody in parts - and Liam Neeson gives a great performance, as does his supporting co-stars.

Ottway (Liam Neeson, Unknown) is preparing to fly back to Anchorage with his coworkers. He is a hunter of sorts for the company; he kills wolves when he sees them get too close to where the men are working outside. Ottway just wants to be left alone so he can sleep, he tells the man who sits next to him (Joe Anderson, The Crazies), whom quickly switches seats when he encounters the grouchy Ottway. The plane hits some turbulence mid-flight, and a digital map shows they are somewhere over Alaska.

What follows is most intense plane crash I have seen in any movie, even including some 9/11 films. When Neeson wakes up, he is shivering and his face is half-covered with snow; he appears to be alone, but when he walks over the snowbank, he sees the wreckage of the plane and bodies and suitcases strewn everywhere. He quickly finds himself a hat and a heavier coat out of one of the suitcases, and then looks for survivors - there are no more than ten. They huddle in the plane and try to decide what to do, and Ottway quickly establishes himself as the leader of the group, because of his survival skills. This is a good thing because on their first night they encounter an unpleasant surprise: there is a pack of wolves in the area who are angry at them for disturbing their hunting space. Ottway and the others decide to head for the trees in an effort to avoid the wolves, but the survivors soon begin to be picked off one by one.

This movie was a lot scarier and a lot bloodier than I thought it would be, but the overall story was excellent. The Grey really gets into the minds of the survivors, especially Neeson's character, who was thinking of committing suicide at the beginning of the film, pre-plane crash, and this is where it excels. The scenes where people get eaten and mangled by the wolves are not for the faint of heart, and I found myself cringing a few times at all of the bloodshed. Neeson's fellow survivors include an unrecognizable Dermot Mulroney (J. Edgar), Dallas Roberts (TV's The Good Wife), and Frank Grillo (Warrior), to name a few, and with their host of different personalities they provide an interesting group of people.

Maybe see this film. I enjoyed it more than I thought I would, and the ending will have you thinking about it long after the last scene, but its not for everyone - if you are averse to bloody scenes and/or major plane crashes, then you should definitely skip it. Be advised, too, that there is an additional scene after the credits, although it's only about three to five seconds long; so if you do see the movie, don't forget to stay for that. The Grey is one of the best "disaster movies" I've seen lately, but it's not the easiest to watch unfurl.

The Grey is in theaters today, January 27th, and is rated R with a runtime of 117 minutes. 3.5 stars out of 5.

CCS’s Center Galleries Presents “Grid List”

The College for Creative Studies’s (CSS) Center Galleries is presenting a new exhibition called “Grid List,” which opens with a public reception on Friday, January 27th, 2012 from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. on the Ford Campus located at 201 East Kirby Street in Detroit. The exhibition will run through Saturday, March 3, 2012. Regular gallery hours are Tuesday-Saturday, 10:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.

“Grid List” presents a new take on Geometric Abstraction with a focus on the individual artist’s idiosyncratic relationship with the grid. Co-organized by artists Mark Sengbusch and Patrick Morrissey, the exhibition includes the work of 16 artists from London, New York, Detroit and Atlanta.

“Grid List explores the influence of the grid on artists. Tracing back the source of geometric abstraction’s past Josef Albers and Sol LeWitt take it to a more personal and direct place,” says Director of Center Galleries Michelle Perron. “Nature, sports, math, science, film, graphic design and video games are just a few of the square wellsprings these artists draw their right angles from. In addition to the artists in the show, there will be "non-art" examples of the grid.”

The exhibition includes recent graduates of CCS: David E. Peterson, Fine Arts ’02 and Mark Sengbusch, Fine Arts ‘02. MOVIE REVIEW: Man on a Ledge

Man on a Ledge does something that no movie in recent memory has done: it combines two different types of movies, the "desperate man hanging off of a ledge" movie with a heist film, because the "man on the ledge" is covering up the bigger picture, a robbery happening at a nearby building. When you combine these two "genres" with an all-star cast, you get an interesting, crazy ride that never fails to hold the audience's attention throughout its 102 minute runtime.

Former police officer Nick Cassidy (Sam Worthington, The Debt) was sent to prison for a crime he didn't commit - stealing the 40 carat diamond of one of New York's "movers and shakers," David Englander (Ed Harris, Salvation Boulevard) - and when he is released for a day for his father's funeral, he disarms the guards that were assigned to him and escapes.

A year or so later, he finds himself perched on the ledge of the Roosevelt Hotel building, threatening to jump and saying that he will only talk to Detective Lydia Mercer (Elizabeth Banks, Our Idiot Brother). Once Mercer is retrieved, she tries to talk him down from the ledge, but she soon finds out that there is a lot more going on here than just a desperate man trying to commit suicide: Cassidy's brother, Joey (Jamie Bell, Jane Eyre) and his girlfriend Angie (Genesis Rodriguez, TV's Entourage), are breaking into Englander's safe to prove that he still, in fact, has the diamond, and the "show" that Nick is doing out on the ledge is simply a cover-up for this.

Worthington, Bell, and Banks, in particular, are all great in this film. The film only employs one flashback, to show how Worthington escaped prison, and it makes ample use of this; I feel that if they had shown more flashbacks, such as how Worthington ended up on David Englander's police detail, it might have dragged the film down a bit. Harris is perfect as the villain here, too, and Edward Burns (27 Dresses) and Anthony Mackie (The Adjustment Bureau) play other police officers, Mackie being Nick's former police partner, who are involved with the incident on the ledge. In addition, Kyra Sedgwick (TV's The Closer) has a bit part as a news reporter who is trying to get the scoop on identifying "the man on the ledge" (Cassidy) and his motivations for being there.

Yes, definitely see this film. The film is super slick and even throws a few twists in near the end, and it's interesting to see how no one else except Nick Cassidy and his brother believed he was innocent. Worthington and Banks quickly establish a rapport, and he mentions that he chose her because of her involvement and engagement with past "jumpers"; her past makes the other policemen not trust her to get Worthington down from the ledge. It goes by so quickly, in fact, that I didn't check my watch until about an hour and a half in to the movie, and only then because I knew it would be ending soon; and the ending itself does not disappoint.

Man on a Ledge is in theaters today, January 27th, and is rated PG-13 with a runtime of 102 minutes. 4 stars out of 5.

REVIEW: Made in Michigan: HOLLA to Michigan Based Companies!!!

Great Lakes Showcase features Michigan based Companies

Last week, my son and were part of the local media who were invited to the Great Lakes Showcase at the Southfield Westin Hotel. This inaugural media event put on by Jason Brown from PublicCityPR and Boost1 Marketing showcased all Michigan-based companies and non-profits.

Anyone that has read this blog for any amount of time knows how I love to feature Michigan based companies so this was my kind of event.

My son and I visited the booths of a number of Michigan companies including a few that have sponsored giveaways on this blog including Just Baked, American Coney Island and Peteet's Famous Cheesecake.

American Coney Island was cooking up samples for everyone and my son loved his coney so much that we had to stop at American Coney Island the night that we went to the Detroit Auto Show. And everyone loved the samples Peteet's was giving out of their famous cheesecake. Peteet's owner Patrick Peteet let me in on the fact that we should all be looking for his Peteet's Cheesecake Ice Cream coming soon. YUMMY!

MOVIE REVIEW: Red Tails

This movie review of "Red Tails" is written by guest blogger Liz Parker

Red Tails tells the true story of the Tuskegee Airmen, an all African-American unit that served as pilots in World War II in Italy in a time when many Americans believed that African-Americans were not "mentally and physically able" to serve. The Airmen not only proved that they were able, but in fact quite adept, and their story is one that has never been told on the big screen until now.

The pilots and their commanders include Major Stance (Cuba Gooding Jr., The Hit List), Colonel Bullard (Terrance Howard, The Ledge), "Easy" (Nate Parker, The Secret Life of Bees), "Junior" (Tristan Wilds, TV's 90210), "Joker" (Elijah Kelley, Hairspray), "Smoky" (singer Ne-Yo), Joe "Lightning" Little (David Oyelowo, The Help), and others. Some of the boys had their own side plots as well; Joe Little was dating a local Italian woman (Daniela Ruah, TV's NCIS: Los Angeles), even though he couldn't speak Italian, and Major Stance was fighting for the Airmen's right to serve in the war, as there were still a lot of racists around who didn't the idea of African-American pilots. Because of Stance and their natural talents, the Red Tails soon get a major opportunity - escorting bomber planes into Berlin - and they take advantage of it to show their flying abilities.

Maybe see this film. There were a lot of things I liked about Red Tails, and a few things that I did not. The cinematography is gorgeous; the Italian landscape, or wherever they filmed it, is shown off well, and all of the vintage planes look great in the sky, and the wardrobe (khaki and beige, for the most part) that the Airmen wore look very authentic too. The scenes where they are in the air are all great, and definitely captivating. All of the missions in the film were actual missions that the Tuskegee Airmen were assigned and completed, and its great to see actual historical events translate to the big screen this well.

However, the movie definitely feels longer than its 125 minute runtime, and it could have been made more concise by cutting some scenes. Some of the dialogue seemed a bit forced, too, especially between the white pilots, for some reason, and this could have been improved on as well. I was amused, too, that whenever they showed the "Gerries" (German pilots) it was always the same pilot over and over, muttering about the damn American pilots. Red Tails will entertain anyone that likes war and/or historical movies (which I do), but it will take the long (and often slow) route in doing so.

Red Tails is in theaters now and is rated PG-13 with a runtime of 125 minutes. 3 stars out of 5.

TECH: Hail to the Cheap! - The Rise of the Small, Affordable Tablet - Will they Outsell the iPad?

By the end of the year, most people will own some sort of tablet...

At the beginning of 2011, I reviewed my first tablet, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.0. One of the points that I brought out in my review is that you cannot compare a 7" tablet to a larger tablet like the iPad since a smaller tablet, due to the size and ease of handling, is used in a whole different manner.

At that time, most people would not even have thought to buy a 7" tablet because everyone wanted an iPad or a tablet the same size as an iPad. Another thing that I think put people off from buying a 7" tablet is that they were the same price as the larger tablets. But all that changed with the release of the Kindle Fire.

The Kindle Fire is the game changer in terms of tablet size and price

The Kindle Fire eReader is built on an Android tablet infrastructure which allows people to not only read books, but also run apps, play games and watch movies. And with a price of less than $200, people flocked to buy this smaller eReader tablet over the 2011 holiday season.

Although small, cheap tablets have been around since the beginning of 2011, no one really paid them any mind until the Kindle Fire caught fire. The Kindle Fire and other eReaders like the Nook Tablet were game changers in the size and price of tablets people are now willing to buy.

Hail to the Cheap Tablet!
2011 was the year of the 10" tablet. From the iPad, to the iPad2, to the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 to the Motorola Xoom 10.1, everyone wanted an iPad or a tablet that looked and felt like an iPad. And I don't blame them. I have had some great experiences with tablets of this size - and expensive.

A $500 ten inch tablet will get you a lot of real estate to play your games and watch your movies. It will also buy you a beautiful, brilliant screen, 16GB to 32GB of space for all your apps and downloads, dual cameras for video chat, bluetooth, a fast processor and access of thousands and thousands of apps in a markeplace. But it also buys you a tablet well over a pound in weight that can feel like carrying around a small brick. And let's face it, not everyone has $500 to spend in this economy.

At $199, the Kindle Fire introduced the idea of tablet ownership to people who would probably not otherwise would have been interested. If you buy Amazon content, you can use this tablet for all things made by Amazon - which means Amazon music, books, games and movies. While there are many shortfalls with the Kindle Fire in terms of memory and the lack of ability to use it for non Amazon content, the Kindle Fire has made tablets an affordable option for tons of people to buy for themselves and also their kids.

The PanDigital SuperNova was a hot holiday buy thanks to QVC

I'd never heard of PanDigital SuperNova, but I like the price...
On Christmas Day, my son's cousins all received tablets from their parents, but they did not get iPads. They received a small tablet that QVC offered a week before Christmas that sold out in no time flat - the PanDigital SuperNova.

Until I saw the QVC presentation, I had never even heard of the PanDigital SuperNova. This 8" tablet sounds pretty good on paper. While the screen resolution is not that great, it does come with 4GB of memory with the ability to expand with another 32GB using a MicroSD card. It also has bluetooth and dual cameras. And the best part was the price. QVC was selling it for around $189 with a 5 month no interest payment plan.

So on Christmas Day, I got to play with one and I quickly found out that just like the Kindle Fire, there are some things you cannot do with the PanDigital SuperNova tablet. It cannot run any Google apps and it has no access to the Google Android Market. It has installed the GetJar Android Market which has a limited library of FREE Android apps.

Although cheap tablets exist like the Kindle Fire and the PanDigital SuperNova, their price usually come with limited functionally that consumers need to know in advance of buying one.

I bought the HTC Evo View 7" tablet for only $229!!!

You can find the Best of Both Worlds - at the Right Price ...
Because of the low price that people are paying for the Kindle Fire, tablet manufactures are doing something that frugal people love - lowering the price of just released 7" and 8" size models and slashing prices of existing models.

Over the holiday, I purchased the 7" HTC Evo View 4G Tablet - and I bought it for around the same price as the Kindle Fire. The HTC Evo View has everything that I love about a $500 Android tablet - a brilliant crystal clear screen, 32GB of memory, bluetooth, dual cameras for video chat, access all my beloved Google apps through the Google Android Market and the ability to either use it with Wifi connectivity or purchase a month to month plan on the Sprint network.

I love the scribe pen technology of the HTC Evo View

I now love the HTC Scribe Pen...
It also has the HTC scribe technology that allows me to write on the screen with a special pen. When I first reviewed this pen technology on the HTC Flyer, I was sceptical of the use. But now I love this pen and use it every day for writing out To Do lists in long hand and taking screen shots with notes which I upload via the tablet to my Evernote account. When the HTC Evo View received an OS update in December to the Honeycomb version of Android, the pen's functionality also increased and now it can be used for screen navigation.

I can easily carry The HTC Evo View around because it weights less than a pound and it is the same size and shape as a paperback book. I love to use it as a eReader and I have loaded it with all the available eReader apps - Kindle, Nook, eReader.com, and Kobo. And because newer tablet models are being released, I was able to get all this goodness at the low, low price of only $229 during a one day sale over the December holiday.

Case-mate Versant Case for HTC Evo View is total protection for device and pen

With my Case-mate Versant cover made especially for this brand tablet, my HTC Evo View is thoroughly protected while giving me a book like feel and providing me a safe place to keep my pen so I will not lose it. When I carry this tablet around in my Case-mate cover, people actually think I am carrying a small planner or notebook and not a tablet.

The Future looks bright for Tablets at an Affordable Price
The 2012 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) debuted a new group of tablets from many major manufacturers. And as these new tablets make their way to stores near you in 2012, start looking for bargains on existing tablets like the deal that I got on my HTC Evo View.

I really believe that by the end of the year, most people will own some sort of tablet because they will be available at price points to satisfy all sizes of wallets.

MOVIE REVIEW: Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close

This review of "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close" was written by guest blogger Liz Parker.

Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close was released in limited markets on Christmas Day 2011, to qualify for Oscar season, but is just now being released nationwide. It's based on the acclaimed novel by Jonathan Saffran Foer, whose novel Everything is Illuminated was also made into a movie. EL&IC is one of the more realistic 9/11 movies I have seen, and the fact that it is told from a child's point of view, for the most part, makes it all the more powerful.

Oskar Schell (newcomer Thomas Horn) lives in New York City with his mom (Sandra Bullock, The Blind Side), and his father (Tom Hanks, Larry Crowne), a man of science who owns his own jewelry store. Oskar is definitely precocious, and was tested for Asperger's Syndrome but "the results were inconclusive," he explains early in the film. Indeed, it appears he does have Asperger's, as he has a hard time talking to people, he carries around a tambourine that helps him through his fears, and he obsesses over anything and everything.

His father assigns Oskar clever assignments, masquerading as "challenges," that involve him having to interact more with people and the world around him, and this seems to be helping his condition. Oskar's world is turned upside down on 9/11, however, as his father is in the Twin Towers for a meeting, and cannot escape. Oskar's world already revolved more around his father than his mother, and is changed irrevocably. After finding a key of his father's that he thinks was meant for himself, Oskar embarks on a "challenge" to find the lock in which it fits, convinced that it is a message of sorts from his father.

The acting in this movie was phenomenal, and Thomas Horn, who wasn't even an actor until about 18 months previous, should be noted for his breakout performance. Horn won Jeopardy! Kids Week in 2010, earning $31,000, and it was then that EL&IC producer Scott Rudin gave him a call to see if he wanted to audition for the part of Oskar, as they were looking for a bright young individual. If I hadn't know this before seeing the film, I never would have guessed Horn was a first-time actor, as he held his own right alongside Sandra Bullock and Tom Hanks. Hanks's character, of course, is mostly seen through flashbacks, but it's obvious that he has a huge impact on Oskar, and Bullock also does a great job as his mother. Viola Davis (The Help) has a small part as someone Oskar meets on his journey, and Max von Sydow (Robin Hood), too, as a renter in Oskar's grandmother's apartment. Jeffrey Wright (The Ides of March) and John Goodman (Red State) have bit parts too.

Yes, see this movie, but be prepared to bring some Kleenex to the theater. I don't usually cry during movies, but I will admit that I was definitely tearing up at a few of the scenes. The movie paints a picture of 9/11 without overwhelming us with images of burning towers and chaos - it sorts of paints around the lines rather than directly in it - yet it still manages to evoke strong emotions both in its characters and audience watching the film. EL&IC captures the aftermath of 9/11, specifically in Oskar's world, and shows how he desperately needs to cherish and stay connected to his father's memory, despite the challenges that may keep him from doing so.

Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close is in theaters today, January 20th, and is rated PG-13 with a runtime of approximately 120 minutes. 4 stars out of 5.

This move review for "Haywire" is written by guest blogger Liz Parker

Michael Douglas! Channing Tatum! Michael Fassbender! Antonio Banderas! Ewan McGregor! These men plus a newcomer, MMA fighter Gina Carano, make up the A-list cast of Haywire. Its trailer makes the movie seem like it will be a fast-paced secret-agent movie, but instead it's rather slow and reflective in parts; however, the fight scenes, mostly due to Carano, are great, and that is where this movie excels.

Mallory (Gina Carano, Blood and Bone) is an agent who works for a private company that is contracted by the government. She's just returned from her last job in Barcelona when her handler, Kenneth (Ewan McGregor, Beginners), asks her to take a "cake job" in Dublin, where her cover will be that she's married to Paul (Michael Fassbender, Shame).

Mallory and Paul will need to extract a journalist to get him home safely. She and Paul attend a party at a castle-like home in Dublin, and when they get back to their hotel room, things go awry; she soon realizes that she's been set up, and she needs to get out of Ireland ASAP. She can't trust her handler anymore so she calls Coblenz (Michael Douglas, Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps), the government agent who hired her company, and explains the situation to him. Mallory must find her way back to the U.S. safely on her own since she is now being labeled as a "rogue agent," and Kenneth will stop at nothing to find her.

Since Gina Carano is an MMA fighter, the fight scenes in this film were top notch. The very beginning of the film will get your attention when one of her former colleagues, Aaron (Channing Tatum, The Eagle), tracks her to a diner where she is having breakfast and proceeds to throw a cup of coffee in her face. However, the points between the fight scenes tended to lag a bit; other screening moviegoers complained that the plot was "weak," though I disagree with that - Carano's character is a smart woman, and so much of the dialogue and twists were interesting.

Yes, see this film, though be aware it doesn't have my "strongest" recommendation. The film could have been better but parts of it were very good, including how it opens in the present and then we are brought back in time via flashbacks to see how Mallory ended up in her current situation. Her father (Bill Paxton, TV's Big Love), too, knows exactly what line of work she is in, and doesn't hesitate to offer her shelter when he finds out that she's running from the "bad guys." Haywire is more of a "thinking" movie than pure action like the recent Contraband, and although it comes up short in some areas, it makes up for those in other aspects of the film.

Haywire is in theaters today, January 20th, and is rated R with a runtime of 93 minutes. 3 stars out of 5.

VIDEO: The North American International Auto Show has lots of Cool Technology, especially Ford

See the empty plate? That's where my son's American Coney Island Coney Dog used to be before he wolfed it down :)

American Coney Island and the Detroit Auto Show make for a Great Evening Out...

Tonight my son and I attended the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) at Cobo Hall. We made an evening of it by first stopping for coney dogs and fries at American Coney Island and then walking the three blocks over to Cobo Hall.

The crowds were light during the evening so we were able to see everything up close and personal. We even got to ride in the electric cars on the lower level.

Many of the auto companies have interactive technology built into their displays so that vistors can learn about the companies while having a fun experience. My son had a blast playing with all the technology. But the highlight of the entire show was the Ford display.

Visitors to the Ford display are able to drive with motorsports star Ken Block to highlight Ford's EcoBoost technology. Now I am a little biased since I am an employee, but I think Ford has the most awesome interactive display in the entire show.

Ford House Hosts FREE Quilt Art International Expressions Exhibit starting 1/28

Contemporary Quilting Display, Workshops, Trunk Shows run through March 25

These aren’t your grandmother’s quilts. Warm up with a vibrant twist on the traditional quilt at Edsel & Eleanor Ford House (Ford House)’s presentation of Quilt Art: International Expressions. The colorful and unique group of quilts will be on display Jan. 28 through March 25. To complement the exhibit, Ford House will highlight local quilt artists and collectors with a variety of related talks, workshops and receptions.

On its first U.S. exhibition tour, Quilt Art features a collection of more than 30 quilts, bringing together 22 contemporary quilt artists from nine countries. Quilt Art extends the boundaries of the quilt medium, further presenting the quilt as an art form.

The rich cultural backgrounds of the artists bring a new approach to the craft of quilting. The diversity reflected in the artistic approach to the quilts in the exhibit is patterned after the artists’ own experiences and training in other artistic fields. Quilts also reflect a variety of themes, including modern social issues, landscapes, modern color and form and unique stitching techniques.

“We can derive so much inspiration and creativity from everything around us, including textiles and artwork,” says Kathleen Mullins, president of Ford House. “Edsel and Eleanor Ford were major proponents of international art in many forms and this is reflected in his automotive design and the estate’s landscape, design and architecture.”

Quilt Art is open to the public Tuesday – Sunday, 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. Admission is complimentary.

MOVIE REVIEW: Contraband

This movie review of "Contraband" is by guest blogger Liz Parker

Contraband looked like it could either be an awesome heist film or a vessel for cliches, but luckily it ended up being more of the former. Much of the movie was over the top and unbelievable, but overall it was a fun film that anyone who is a fan of heist or gangster movies will enjoy.

Reformed criminal Chris Farraday (Mark Wahlberg, The Fighter) got out of "the life" when he married his wife and had kids, but now his brother-in-law, Andy (Caleb Landry Jones, X-Men: First Class), owes some bad guys a lot of money because he didn't fulfill his end of their bargain. Chris must do one more job in Panama in order to pay the guys (including Giovanni Ribisi, The Rum Diary) what Andy owes them; if he's unable to cough up the money, they will kill Andy and then come after Chris and his family.

The performances in this movie were great in that a look or smirk could be exchanged and the audience would be able to tell what was being conveyed. In one scene, Andy's wife (Kate Beckinsale, Everybody's Fine) says that the bad guys won't kill him, and we see Chris (Wahlberg) kind of raise an eyebrow and look at her, as if to say "Yeah, they will." Contraband also has a great cast of supporting characters, including Ben Foster (The Mechanic) as a former associate of Chris's; Diego Luna (Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights) as one of the Panamanian gangsters; and J.K. Simmons (The Music Never Stopped) as the captain of the boat that Chris uses to smuggle the "funny money" back from Panama. Simmons, especially, gives a pitch-perfect performance here, and Walhberg's is decent as well.

Yes, see this film, but be aware it's rated "R" for a reason (mostly language). Contraband is not a film that will make you muse about it hours or days after viewing, but it had a lot of good twists that will keep you on your toes throughout. One of the funniest lines is when Walhberg's brother-in-law sees him stripping off wads of bills hidden under his shirt when they arrive in their ship cabin, and he says to him something like "Don't say you don't enjoy this," to which Wahlberg replies "I love it, but don't tell your sister." Walhberg got out of "the life" so that he and his family could go "legit," but that doesn't mean he still doesn't enjoy the thrill of the game, and the audience is able to experience some of those thrills in Contraband.

Contraband is in theaters and rated R with a runtime of 110 minutes. 3.5 stars out of 5.

MOVIE REVIEW: Beauty and the Beast in 3D

This review of "Beauty and the Beast in 3D" is by guest blogger Liz Parker...

It's a tale as old as time (or as old as 1991, anyway): Beauty and the Beast, now back on the big screen in Disney Digital 3D. I used to own the film on VHS (and here's where I lose the young ones ...), but I hadn't seen Beauty and the Beast in quite some time. It was nice to see it back in theaters, although I'm not sure if the 3D added much; it was good in some scenes, but a little shaky in others.

The plot, for those of you that don't know it: Belle (voiced by Paige O'Hara) lives a "provincial life" with her inventor father, Maurice (Rex Everhart), and is an avid reader. However, the most handsome man in town, Gaston (Richard White), wants her as his wife, and he will stop at nothing to have her. On the way to an inventor's fair, Belle's father gets lost in the woods, and he ends up at the Beast's castle. The enchanted fixtures there welcome him in, but the Beast (Robby Benson) is not as hospitable; he throws him in the tower, not caring about his well-being. When Belle goes to find her father, she offers herself to the Beast as a trade, so that Maurice may go free. The Beast agrees and Belle must be his prisoner, and live in the enchanted castle, for the rest of her life.

Although the Beast is harsh on the outside, Belle soon finds that he has a softer side too. What she doesn't know, however, is that he used to be a prince, before a spell was cast on him that made him look the way he does now; he must break the spell by his 21st birthday by finding someone to love him, or else he will look like a beast forever. His former servants now are the fixtures in the house, as well - there is Mrs. Potts (Angela Lansbury), the teakettle, and her son Chip (Bradley Pierce); Cogsworth (David Ogden Stiers) the clock; Lumiere (Jerry Orbach) the candelabra; and the Wardrobe (Jo Ann Worley), among others.

This is the second film that Disney has released from "the vault" in 3D - the first was The Lion King, in September of last year - and they are planning on releasing a few more too, the next being the more recent Finding Nemo on September 14th. The Lion King did very well at the box office - I believe its initial run was to be for two weeks, but it was extended - and Disney is probably banking on Beauty and the Beast to perform similarly. The film was great to see again, as I had not seen it in some time, but I noticed that when people showed up in 3D near the beginning of the film, it was a little shaky. The 3D became better later on into the film, and the ballroom scenes near the middle and end were done very well in it.

Yes, see this film, especially if you have little ones who have not seen it. Although it's not my favorite of the Disney movies, the servants (fixtures) in the house are fun, and it's interesting to see how later movies (think Beastly) relied on Beauty and the Beast for its inspiration. Belle is one of the "original" Disney princesses, too, and luckily Disney made her not only beautiful, but smart as well ("Women shouldn't be reading - they'll get ideas!" remarks Gaston, near the beginning of the film). Beauty and the Beast is a fun movie for all ages, and the 3D is decent, but The Lion King's 3D was better, in my opinion.

Beauty and the Beast 3D is in theaters today, January 13th, and is rated G with a runtime of 84 minutes (originally released in theaters on November 22, 1991). 3.5 stars out of 5.

MOVIE REVIEW: Joyful Noise

This review of "Joyful Noise" is by guest blogger Liz Parker

I saw the trailer for Joyful Noise a few days before seeing the film, and I wasn't entirely sure what to expect from the movie. I'm not a huge fan of gospel music, but I do like Queen Latifah, and it seemed that she and Dolly Parton would make a good pair. The movie, armed with a hilarious script, ended up exceeding my expectations, and it is a film that anyone - gospel fan or not - will enjoy.

Vi Rose (Queen Latifah, Just Wright) lives in the small town of Pacashau, Georgia, with her 16-year-old daughter Olivia (Keke Palmer, Red Hook Summer) and her son, Walter (Dexter Darden, Standing Ovation), who has Asperger's syndrome. Vi Rose and Olivia are very active in their church's choir, and they are heading to the regional finals for the Joyful Noise competition for the second year in a row. The choir director (Kris Kristofferson, Dolphin Tale), however, passes away shortly before the regional finals, and his wife, G.G. (singer Dolly Parton), hopes to be named the new director, but is disappointed when the honor is given to Vi Rose instead.

At the same time, G.G.'s grandson Randy (newcomer Jeremy Jordan) arrives from New York, where he's run away from a bad home situation. He becomes interested in Olivia, and realizes that to get closer to her, he will have to join the church choir; luckily, he has an amazing voice. He develops some new versions of classic songs for the group to sing, but Pastor Dale (Courtney B. Vance, Final Destination 5) is not having any of it, and says that if the choir doesn't do the older songs, the church will not sponsor them in the competition.

I love movies where it feels like you are watching a show or performance rather than a film, and Joyful Noise is superb at achieving this. The strongest parts of the film is when the choir is singing, and some of what they sing is not "typical" gospel music. There are many subplots, too, that fit right in, such as the budding romance between two of the choir members (not Olivia and Randy), and the result of it, and these provide even more comedy to an already believable script. The "hen fight" type vibe between Latifah and Parton works as well, and result in some of the funnier moments; at one point, Latifah yells at Parton and makes a crack about her age, saying "[Parton] reads the Bible to reminisce!" (Parton, indeed, is getting on in years, but is still a fantastic singer, and not a half bad actress either)

Yes, see this film. Even if you think that it's not the type of film that you would like, if you like dancing/singing movies such as Footloose or Save the Last Dance you will love this movie, and you'll be singing and clapping your seat by the end of it. There are parts of it that tend to become sappy or "cliched," as some may say, but it always returns to singing, and that is where the movie excels. The finale scene, too, is one of the best choir scenes in the movie. The film should do well at the box office with its collection of A-listers such as Latifah and Parton, and I hope that people will see it before (mistakenly) classifying it as a movie that won't hold their interest.

Joyful Noise is in theaters today, January 13, and is rated PG-13 with a runtime of 119 minutes. 4 stars out of 5.

How I Saved a Bundle Buying My Son Prescription Eyewear at EyeBuyDirect

Once upon a time, there was a kid that could loss anything that was not nailed down and he needed eyeglasses...

Over the holidays, my son and I went to the doctor to have our eyes checked. I have worn glasses for reading since I was a kid and I knew that my son was having trouble seeing things that are far away. We went to an OptimEyes Super Center and the staff did an awesome job getting both our appointments completed in about one hour, start to finish.

Once our appointments were over, it was time to pick out some frames. At the time, I had no idea that there was over ten people in line ahead of us and only one OptimEyes staff person available for assistance. This fact actually turned out to be a very good thing in this story.

They told us to browse, so I took my son over to the kids area and he picked out some designer frames that he said were cool, and I agreed. The glasses really looked great on him. The frames were called B.U.M. Catcher and the price - $129.00. I figured with the lenses, I would be out well over $200.

So as I am watching my son styling and profiling in the mirror, I start to remember things - like the fact that my child has lost two wrist watches, his entire gym bag and all his school supplies since the beginning of the school year. And how none of these lost items have turned up in the lost and found at school.

I start thinking that this is the child that has walked out of Karate class without his expensive Karate equipment too many times to count. This is the kid that came back from Boys Scouts without his hat and gloves in 20 degree weather. This is the kid that can lose anything that is not nailed down.

I starting thinking that if I buy this kid $200 eyeglasses, he is going to lose them. And I am going to get very upset and start yelling and screaming. And he is going to claim that it's not his fault that he does not know where the glasses are. And I am going to start hyperventilating and be in need of medical care because I will have to spend another $200 to replace the lost glasses.

I start thinking - Do I really want this? NOOOO!!!!

Since we are being ignored anyway, I head to the reception area to get a print out of our prescriptions so we can get out of this place. As I am driving home, I start to think about how I can get this kid some cool eyeglasses without spending $200 - since he is definitely going to lose them.

When I get home, I turn on my computer and start with an Internet search for B.U.M. Catcher frames. I find the exact frames on a discount prescription eyeglass website, but the company has terrible reviews from people who claim their lenses did not match their prescriptions and the company never returned their money. Yikes!

Do EyeGlass Bloggers Exist? YES!!!
Then I start wondering if there are any bloggers that specialize in discount eyeglasses, and low and behold, I hit the jackpot. The blog is called GlassyEyes and I start reading the first post called "Eyeglass Stores are for Suckers" - this blogger definitely has a way with words. I start reading more of his posts to see which websites he suggests that his readers buy from.

I end up on a website called EyeBuyDirect and start reading all the praise from Facebook fans who love the glasses that they bought from the site. Since this site does not sell B.U.M. designer frames, I use the photos that I took of my son in the B.U.M Catcher Frames as a guide and start looking for similar size and shape frames.

I found an EyeBuyDirect frame called the Rochester that is the same size specs and rectangular shape as the B.U.M. Catcher frame. The cost of this frame is $19.95 and price includes the anti-scratch lens, a protective case and a cleaning cloth !!!!!

Since this is an experiment, I don't buy any of the other options offered. I just type in my son's prescription and his pupillary distance and that's it. Since I notice the order form includes a discount coupon field, I do an Internet search that turns up an EyeBuyDirect coupon for 20% off with FREE shipping. My total order comes to only $15.96. I am totally floored.

At this point, I don't know what to expect so I just go with the flow. If this experiment turns out good, this will be the savings story of the year. If it turns out bad I am only out $15 and we go back to OptimEyes.

I put in my order on December 27th at 7pm and immediately get my first email from EyeBuyDirect thanking me for my order. At 8pm, I get another email with the following message -

We are pleased to advise that work on your new pair of prescription eyeglasses has begun! Our team is now allocating the selected frame(s) and lenses according to your particular needs. We expect work to last a couple of days and we will be sending you your new eyeglasses soon!

On December 28th at 1am (only 5 hours later), I get another email from EyeBuyDirect -

We are working on your lenses. This is the stage in which our optometric team cuts the lens to fit the frame and the prescription. Each lens has to be treated with utmost precision to fit each individual prescription and frame preference. We will probably have this finished by tomorrow and it should take another day or two to fit the lens in the frame you selected.

On December 30th at 1pm, I get yet another message -

We have completed work on your lens and will fit it in the frame soon. This may take a day or two since we might have to make slight adjustments to the lens. We don't want anything but a perfect fit to come out of our lab!

On January 1st at 2am, I get the message that they are done -

We're done! Your new eyeglasses are just about ready to go but before we send them let us please take one more look to make sure everything is OK. We are sure you will understand... By the way, did you know that there are seven (!!!) stages in which our team checks, then double checks, triple checks quadruple...

I don't hear back form EyeBuyDirect again until January 6th at 8am with the news that I have been waiting for -

Your new eyeglasses are ready and have been shipped to you via USPS on Friday 06 January, 2012. Please expect to receive them within 2 to 3 days (USA) / 5 to 7 days (Canada) from this date.

When I returned from work (today) on January 9th, my son's new glasses had arrived - within 3 days just as they stated.

So here is my son in his new $15 prescription eyeglasses. Can you tell the difference between them and the B.U.M frames ??? The B.U.M. frames are a little more square, but other than that, these EyeBuyDirect Frames are very on point.

So I will be back online ordering my kid some backup eyeglasses from EyeBuyDirect. At these prices, I will get 2 extra pair with anti-glare lens and some of the other options. But one pair will stay at home where he cannot lose them ;)

MOVIE REVIEW: "16-LOVE" + Enter the movie Sweepstakes for a FREE Tennis Trip to San Diego - ENDS 1/22

Darn movie made me tear up at the end....

What would you do if you were 16 years old and injuried from playing a sport that you scarified everything for to the point that you have never attended a party, hung out with your friends nor even tasted ice cream? And of top of all that, your type-A Dad is your coach?

Well that is the life of Ally Mash (played by Lindsey Shaw), in the new independent film called "16-LOVE".

Ally has known nothing but playing tennis and now at age 16, she is the number one ranking junior tennis player in her home town of San Diego. She is driven to win by her Dad (played by Keith Coulouris) who is a former competitive men's tennis player who never made professional.

Ally has not lost a match since she was 8 years old, until she meets her "match" with mean girl opponent Katina Upranova (played by Susie Abromeit). During the tennis match, Ally hurts her ankle which starts a series of events that changes her life and makes her finally wonder if there is more to life than just tennis.

Ally's friends in the movie are laugh-out-loud crazy and really help to make this movie fun. There is her best friend Rebecca (played by Lindsey Black) with her multiple color hair and strange clothes who is a hot dog girl at the mall. And then there is Ally's love interest, super cute hottie Farrell Gambles (played by Chandler Massey) who plays tennis for fun while hoping to get just good enough to land a college scholarship. Both Rebecca and Farrell help Ally understand that winning is not everything if you don't have fun while you're doing it.

There are scenes in the movie that made me chuckle like when Ally becomes Farrell's tennis coach and she "whips" him into shape, drill sergeant style. Lindsey Shaw as Ally is a very good actress who nailed this role as a hard core tennis player. While no one will win any awards in "16-LOVE", the movie is cute and inspiring and there is a father/daughter scene that made me tear up at the end. This is a movie that will appeal to tweens and to parents who want a family film to watch with their kids.

"16-LOVE" will be in theaters, video on demand, and online January 20th.

I believe that a beautiful website attracts more readers...

I usually include at least one photo to go along with each blog post on FREEISMYLIFE. When I don't use my own photos, finding photos that I can use for FREE without paying a royalty can be a lot of work.

Now there is a website that does all the work for me.

Using PhotoPin.com, all I have to do is type in key words to search for the kind of photo that I need and Photo Pin searches the Flicker Creative Commons for matching photos. SWEET!

MOVIE REVIEW: Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy

Today's movie review of "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy" is by guest blogger Liz Parker...

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy has an impressive cast list including Mark Strong, Colin Firth, Gary Oldman, and Tom Hardy, among others, which is impressive. It also has the dubious distinction of being one of the only movies of recent memory that completely confused me and also almost put me to sleep, as it was very, very slow. At the screening I attended, we were given a "dossier" of sorts that explained the plot and the characters in the film, and it appears that I should have read this more closely, because the plot explains nothing and leaves it up to the audience to decipher its various components.

Only three parts of the plot were clear: one, there was a mole in the "Circus" (what they call their intelligence agency); two, they were trying to find out who that was; and three, Strong's character gets shot in the very beginning, although the particulars of this change later on in the movie. Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy is based on the novel by John le Carré, who writes decent spy novels - I've read a few - and to further understand the film, I looked at the Wikipedia page for the book. I also asked a friend who also saw it to explain it to me, and his explanation is much shorter. To paraphrase: "Oldman was the boss and they wanted him out."

What I didn't understand, though, was the point of the movie, other than the agents trying to ferret out the spy. There are random side plots and too many characters, and everyone who went to the screening proclaimed it to be the slowest movie they've seen in a while. If the director wants to reward those who have read the book or viewed the BBC version, that's fine, but they need to at least clue the audience in to some of the film, or we will get restless, like I did. Revealing information with a wink - i.e., Firth's character was having an affair with Oldman's wife, and we see him sitting at Oldman's dining room table wearing casual boots instead of shoes, which clued us in to that - is also acceptable, but if the majority of the audience doesn't pick up on said "wink," then it's a bit pointless to reveal crucial information in that manner.

The official plot description from the film's IMDb page, by the way, is: "In the bleak days of the Cold War, espionage veteran George Smiley is forced from semi-retirement to uncover a Soviet agent within MI6's echelons."

No, don't see this film. Though I haven't seen the 1979 BBC adaptation or read the book, I can't imagine anything moving slower than this movie did. I'm hoping that the actors themselves knew what they were getting themselves in to, but it's possible they saw who else was attached to the film and readily signed on without realizing that the movie is so dull. I expect more out of an all-star cast like this, and although the acting was decent, the plot was so confusing and the movie so slow that one can't help but to hate this film.

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy is in theaters today, January 6th, and is rated R with a runtime of 127 minutes (which also didn't help). 1.5 stars out of 5.
