FREE People Mover rides on Thanksgiving Day 11/22 courtesy of United Shore

United Shore to pick up the tab as over 1 million people expected downtown for America’s Thanksgiving Day Parade ® and Detroit Lions game...

November 13, 2018 – United Shore, one of Metro Detroit’s fastest-growing employers, is covering all costs for Detroit People Mover (DPM) riders from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day (Thursday, Nov. 22), allowing downtown Detroit visitors to navigate the area for free as part of “Thanksgiving Free Fare Day”.

“United Shore has a lot to be thankful for and we’re happy to pay it forward by offering free rides on the Detroit People Mover this Thanksgiving,” said Mat Ishbia, President and CEO of United Shore. “We’re a family company, and this was an opportunity to extend our community goodwill beyond Oakland County and into downtown Detroit, where so many great family traditions take place on Thanksgiving Day.”

More than 1 million people are expected to travel downtown for the Parade which starts at 9 a.m., and the Detroit Lions football game against the Chicago Bears at 12:30 p.m. The closest DPM stations for the Thanksgiving Day Parade are Grand Circus Park, Broadway and Cadillac Center; these stations as well as the Greektown Station are within walking distance to Ford Field. Riders may board or exit from any of the 13 People Mover station stops.

The “Thanksgiving Free Fare Day” is part of a partnership between United Shore and DPM, as United Shore has also wrapped DPM trains with banner advertisements as part of a recruiting push. Messaging on the trains implores people to “Put your career on the right track” and directs them the United Shore website to explore career opportunities: unitedshore.com/beyouhere United Shore, parent company of the nation’s No. 1 wholesale mortgage lender and fifth-largest lender overall,

United Wholesale Mortgage, moved its headquarters from Troy to Pontiac in June, and is persistent in its community relations initiatives. The company recently rejected $1.9 million in tax incentives that it was eligible to receive from Oakland County as part of its relocation. In June, United Shore awarded free bicycles and helmets to every elementary student in the Pontiac School District that achieved perfect attendance for the 2017-18 school year.

“Over the last four years, Thanksgiving Free Fare Day on the People Mover has become a staple of Thanksgiving Day in downtown Detroit,” said Barbara Hansen, General Manager of the Detroit Transportation Corporation. “We’re thankful that United Shore has continued this tradition and are excited to bring area families together to enjoy the Thanksgiving Day festivities.”

DPM has coordinated with Detroit Department of Transportation (DDOT) the easy transfer to DDOT’s Eastside routes affected by parade traffic. Affected routes include #9 Jefferson,#52 Chene, #31 Mack, #67 Cadillac-Harper, #6 Gratiot and #5 Van Dyke. DDOT customers should board these routes at the People Mover’s Bricktown Station, located on Beaubien St., north of Larned (DDOT transfer or fare required). Eastside routes will resume service to the Rosa Parks Transit Center at 6 p.m.

Standard People Mover service will resume at 9 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 23. For more information on the People Mover, visit its official website at www.thepeoplemover.com.

FREE Family Fun, FREE Parking at 10th Annual Shell Eco-Marathon at Cobo Center 4/22-4/24

Special thanks to Shell for partnering with FREEISMYLIFE to inform everyone about this year's Shell Eco-Marathon in beautiful Downtown Detroit ...

Shell Eco-Marathon Americas 2016 returns to

Downtown Detroit

April 22-24, 2016

FREE Family Fun | Cobo Center | 9AM to 6PM | FREE Parking

Don't miss this year's Shell Eco-marathon Americas, a festival of ideas and innovation that can help shape the future of our cities. The 10th annual competition will take place this weekend, April 22-24, 2016, on the streets of downtown Detroit and inside Cobo Center.

Some of my photos from last year's event, with the Ren Cen as the backdrop...

For more than 30 years, Shell Eco-marathon competitions have challenged future automotive engineers and scientists to push the limits of energy efficiency and innovate solutions to the world's mobility challenges.

Over 1000 High School and College Students will compete, including 12 Michigan Teams...

More than 1,000 high school and college students from across the Americas will head to Detroit to see who can design and build ultra-energy efficient vehicles and go the farthest distance using the least amount of energy in Shell Eco-marathon® Americas 2016.

This year, Michigan will be well represented at the competition with 12 teams from 8 schools, including

- International Academy E
- Lapeer County Education and Technology Center
- Lawrence Technological University
- Michigan Technological University
- Plymouth Canton Educational Park (P-CEP)
- Troy High School
- University of Detroit Jesuit High School
- University of Detroit Mercy

My son loved last year's event...

FREE Fun for the Entire Family...
This festival of innovation, energy and creativity is FREE and fun for the whole family with hands-on, interactive activities celebrating science, technology, engineering, math and energy.

My son and I attended last year and were thrilled by everything that we experienced. It was like being at a science and technology version of the Detroit Auto Show!  As you can tell from all my photos, we had a blast.

As part of the event last year, my son got to suit up and ride in one of the test cars and I was able to drive an electric vehicle on the roof of Cobo Hall. We also got a look at an imaginary Detroit in 2050, shaped by energy efficient innovation and we also take an imaginary walk with our tour guide along an oil rig on the Gulf Coast.

And our favorite experience was the MichelinSlow Motion Booth where we picked out props and filmed a slow motion video.

So if you want to experience fun like my son and I had, make sure to not miss the 10th annual Shell Eco-Marathon when it makes its way back to Detroit this weekend.

In addition to the science and technology fun, this year the event will feature special guest performances from Detroit's own "NUCLASSICA" and the "Selected of God" choir.

GIVEAWAY: Kroger and Shell #FuelRewards have teamed up to Fill Your Tank for Less - ENDS 11/10 (CLOSED)

This post and giveaway are sponsored by the Shell Fuel Rewards Network. All opinions are my own because I love saving money...

I keep both my Kroger and my Shell Fuel Rewards cards close in my wallet...

Save up to $1 per Gallon with Kroger and Shell Fuel Rewards!!!

Since June, I have been telling everyone about the Shell Fuel Rewards Network, which is a FREE loyalty program that helps you spend less on gas.

Just for being a member, I save at least 3 cents per gallon on my gasoline purchases at Shell participating locations, including the Shell station right by my home. All I have to do is insert my Shell Fuel Rewards Network card at the pump and price of my gas is lowered automatically - HOLLA!!!

And Shell Fuel Rewards Network members get some very nice one-time bonus savings like a 25 cent off per gallon on your second fill up (when using the Shell Fuel Savings card) and additional savings per gallon when you link your Shall Fuel Savings card to your credit/debit card for dining out and online purchases.

But did you know you can save money on Shell gas by also  shopping at Kroger?

I am a long time Kroger customer. With the many stores that they have throughout the Metro Detroit area, I can stop in at a location in Dearborn to buy a healthy meal for lunch, and pick up all my groceries for the week on my way home at a Kroger location in Northwest Detroit near my home.  Kroger prices are great and I always make sure to pick up their weekly ad so that I know what's on sale for the week.

But in addition to helping everyone to save money on our groceries, shopping at Kroger can also help us to save money on filling up our gas tanks.

Now, when you shop at a Kroger grocery store, qualifying purchases earn you direct fuel savings of up to $1 per gallon. For example, 100 Kroger grocery points = 10 cents off per gallon at participating Shell locations.

Just think as you are grocery shopping for football season tailgating or getting ready your big Thanksgiving feast, you can be earning rewards points at your local Kroger store on your seasonal purchases.

So if you have a Kroger Card in your wallet (or on your keychain), be sure to also keep your Shell Fuel Rewards Network Card front and center too.

If you don't have a Shell Rewards card, what are you waiting for?

The Shirt Box in Farmington Hills will put “BOTTLE” in “BOTTLE”NECK on September 11th for drivers sitting in construction on Northwestern Highway...

As the interchange at Northwestern Highway, 14 Mile and Orchard Lake roads undergoes a substantial makeover, drivers are sitting, backed-up for miles during rush hour.

Ron Elkus and Rod Brown, co-owners of the men’s haberdashery The Shirt Box, has decided to do something to help put drivers at ease. The men purchased cases of bottled water and are passing out the bottles to drivers stopped in front of its shop. They were inspired by the “random act of kindness” philosophy.

The Shirt Box will be out in full force on Thursday, September 11, 2014 passing out FREE bottled water to thirsty drivers between 4:30-6 p.m.  So be on the look out if you are in the area.

The Shell Fuel Rewards stretches my gas budget to the max...
