Detroit Medical Center & Medical Weight Loss Clinic hosts FREE Weight-loss & Wellness Event 9/27

“Your New Self – The Shape of Things to Come…” promises to be both Informational and Inspirational...

The Detroit Medical Center (DMC) and Medical Weight Loss Clinic (MWLC) – which earlier this year announced an exclusive partnership to offer patients, both surgical and non-surgical, a comprehensive spectrum of weight-loss services – today announced plans to host a unique, no-cost weight-loss and wellness community event.

The program, entitled, “Your New Self – The Shape of Things to Come…,” will take place on Saturday, Sept. 27, 2014 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the DoubleTree Suites by Hilton Hotel – Detroit Downtown-Fort Shelby. Complimentary valet parking will be available at the hotel entrance at 525 W. Lafayette in Detroit.

The free event, dedicated to informing and inspiring attendees on their personal weight-loss journeys, will include:

- Presentations from and Q&A sessions with board certified physicians from DMC and MWLC

- A fashion show featuring actual weight-loss patients from DMC and MWLC as the starring models

- Success stories and Q&A sessions with DMC and MWLC patients

- Fitness demonstrations from DMC Rehabilitation Institute of Michigan and TrainBetter.org

- On-site evaluation, consultation and enrollment opportunities

- Community networking and support opportunities

- Gift giveaways

To register call 1.855.564.7639 or visit www.harperbmi.org/YourNewSelf

“Making the choice to get healthy is a lifestyle commitment and we want people to know that they don’t have to do it alone. The DMC and MWLC are here to help and support them on their journey,” said Michael Wood, Medical Director of the DMC’s Bariatric Surgery program. “This free event will give people a chance to meet with experts, learn about their options, both surgical and non-surgical weight management, and see firsthand real people who have had success.”

DMC surgeons perform weight-loss procedures – bariatric surgery – on men and women who are at least 100 pounds overweight, suffer from related health conditions and have unsuccessfully tried other weight-loss methods. DMC bariatric surgeons use many different surgical techniques to help morbidly obese patients lose weight, regain health and take control of their lives.

“We understand how overwhelming it can feel to need and want to lose a significant amount of weight, and that’s why MWLC and DMC are working together, and hosting this free event,” said David Paull, president of MWLC. “People need guidance, support, information and options, and this event is designed to provide all of those things in one place. We want to set people up for weight-loss success and a lifetime of wellness, and it can all start for them on September 27th.”

4 Ways to Cut the Drama of Kids' Back-to-School Immunizations and Vaccinations #GiveaShot #shop

Disclosure: This shop has been compensated by #CollectiveBias and its advertiser Walgreens #GiveaShot.  All opinions are my own...

Fast and easy is the key to back-to-school immunizations...

I cannot believe that back-to-school is just around the corner. My son has really enjoyed a summer filled with sleeping in and day trips all over metro Detroit with even more fun to come. But I know that it is now time to think about the new school year. And besides buying new school supplies, one thing that always seems to be at the top of the back-to-school list is immunizations.

My 14 year old son would rather run naked through the streets than to sit still for vaccinations. Drama is my son's middle name for anything that he does not like to do, especially for immuninzations.  So if your kids are like mine, here are a few tips on how to get through immunizations with your sanity still in tack -

1.  Keep the visit a secret until the last minute...
After all these years, I personally still keep my son informed on a need to know basis about everything we do because he loves to be a drama king.

2.  Video Games are the Dragon Slayers of Waiting Room Drama...
My son jokes that my purse contains everything he needs to get through any situation. So you better believe that I have been known to pull out a new video game (that I bought on sale and hid) at the most opportune times - especially when immunizations are involved. When my son gets a new video game, all else fades into the background, including fear of vaccinations.

3.  Bribery does work!
During the visit for my son's immunizations last year, I went for the big guns when it was time for the shots. I told him that if he sat still and let the doctor do her thing, we would stop at his favorite fast food restaurant and he could have anything he wanted on the menu. You should seen his eyes light up - the doctor actually started laughing. My son quickly called over the doctor so that he could get the whole thing over with as fast as possible so we should be on our way. I don't think there is much my son will not do if chicken nuggets or pizza are involved :

4. Make the Process Quick and Easy...
The key to kids and immunizations is to make the process as quick and easy as possible. And Walgreens is trying to do just that for getting kids their back-to-school immunizations such as for whooping cough and meningitis.

Walgreens makes back-to-school immunizations quick and easy with no appointments necessary and by accepting most insurance plans. Plus, their pharmacists can report back to your regular primary care physician.

Did you know that 1 in 5 children around the world still lack access to lifesaving immunizations?

Walgreens wants to help kids every where get the immunizations that they need. So this year, when your child gets their back-to-school immunization at Walgreens, Walgreens will in turn help provide a free lifesaving vaccine to a child in a developing country through the UN Foundation's Shot@Life campaign.

What's not to like about getting your kids immunizations done without an appointment while also helping other children?  Find out more about the Walgreens "Get a Shot Give a Shot" campaign at Walgreens.com/GoBackHealthy

FREE CPR Refresher Campaign "Be a Shield" allows Parents to Brush up on Lifesaving Skills

If someone in your family was in need of CPR, would you know what to do?

When my son was born, I remember it all being a whirlwind of activity from the day I entered the hospital until the day we all went home. But one thing that I remember distinctly was one of the nurses suggesting that we take a CPR class so that we would be prepared if my son was to stop breathing for any reason.  As parents, we want the best for our family so taking a CPR class was the least that I could do to be prepared as a new mom.

If someone in your family was in need of CPR, would you know what to do? Over 70% of adults say they don’t feel comfortable administering CPR.

That's why ACLS National, a medical certification company, is promoting a FREE CPR refresher campaign called "Be a Shield" to improve awareness and knowledge of general lifesaving skills like rescue breathing and chest compressions.

The "Be A Shield" CPR refresher campaign stresses just six steps you can read to help in providing CPR to an adult, child, or infant -

Step 1: Assess Responsiveness
Step 2: Check for a Pulse
Step 3: Chest Compressions
Step 4: Giving Rescue Breathing
Step 5: How to Perform the Heimlich Maneuver
Step 6: Identify and Treat Heat Exhaustion

ACLS National provides certification services to a wide variety of healthcare professions from physicians, nurses, life guards, dentists, pharmacists, personal trainers and other professionals, including those who wish to earn a CPR card in Michigan.

Thanks to ACLS National for partnering with freeismylife.com to help promote this series about CPR knowledge.

UPDATE: FREE Coastal.com Prescription Frames & Lens a Whopping Success !!!

Can you get Prescription Eyeglasses for Peanuts?  YES!!!

On January 11th, I wrote a post telling everyone about the FREE eyeglasses (frames and lens) being offered by Coastal.com to first time shoppers on their website.  I ordered my son a pair of their prescription eyeglasses and all I had to pay was $6.95 for shipping.

I had just ordered my son a pair of prescription eyeglasses from EyeBuyDirect for only $15.96, so this Coastal.com offer was even a better deal.

I put in my order on Coastal.com on 1/11 in the evening and I received an email the next day stating the glasses had been shipped - that was an incredible turn around time.

On January 18th, the glasses arrived via US mail and Coastal even paid for signature confirmation to make sure that I received them.  The frames came in a drawstring bag inside a beautiful blue hard case with a cleaning cloth and a mini screwdriver.

My son loves his new glasses and states these are even cooler than the pair from EyeBuyDirect. I am now hooked on buying prescription eyeglasses on the Internet.  Now I need to buy a pair for myself :)

Coastal is still offering a FREE Pair of Select Glasses (frames and lens) to new customers with discount code FIRSTPAIRFREE.

FREE Pair of Eyeglasses (Frames & Lens) at Coastal.com - Limited Time Offer

Get a Free Pair of Select Glasses, just pay shipping

This freebie is very timely after my post this week on how I got my son a pair of new eyeglasses for only $15.96 total on the EyeBuyDirect.com website.

Coastal.com is offering a FREE Pair of Select Glasses (frames and lens) to new customers with discount code FIRSTPAIRFREE. If you don't select any extra options you will only have to pay standard shipping which is $6.95.

I found out about this freebie over on the Slickdeals website so go to this Slickdeals link to read the discussion thread to get lots more detail.  I did an Internet search and it looks like this free eyeglasses deal is something that this company has done a few times in the past.  I cannot find any information on when this deal ends.

I ordered a pair for my son for his backup eyeglasses. I searched for a frame that looked similar to the one I just ordered for him on EyeBuyDirect and found the Ltede 1002 in Brown (see photo above).

Once I placed my order, I was told I should expect the glasses on January 17th.  I will do a follow up once I get them to let everyone know if these glasses are as good as the ones I ordered from EyeBuyDirect.  For $6.95 it is totally worth finding out...

UPDATE: 1/20/2012 - I received the Coastal frames on 1/18 in the mail and my son loves them and received lots of complaints at school.  And I cannot complain about the price being on $6.95. Below are some photos of my son in his new eyeglasses -

How I Saved a Bundle Buying My Son Prescription Eyewear at EyeBuyDirect

Once upon a time, there was a kid that could loss anything that was not nailed down and he needed eyeglasses...

Over the holidays, my son and I went to the doctor to have our eyes checked.  I have worn glasses for reading since I was a kid and I knew that my son was having trouble seeing things that are far away.  We went to an OptimEyes Super Center and the staff did an awesome job getting both our appointments completed in about one hour, start to finish.

Once our appointments were over, it was time to pick out some frames.  At the time, I had no idea that there was over ten people in line ahead of us and only one OptimEyes staff person available for assistance.  This fact actually turned out to be a very good thing in this story.

They told us to browse, so I took my son over to the kids area and he picked out some designer frames that he said were cool, and I agreed. The glasses really looked great on him. The frames were called B.U.M. Catcher and the price - $129.00. I figured with the lenses, I would be out well over $200.

So as I am watching my son styling and profiling in the mirror, I start to remember things - like the fact that my child has lost two wrist watches, his entire gym bag and all his school supplies since the beginning of the school year. And how none of these lost items have turned up in the lost and found at school.

I start thinking that this is the child that has walked out of Karate class without his expensive Karate equipment too many times to count. This is the kid that came back from Boys Scouts without his hat and gloves in 20 degree weather. This is the kid that can lose anything that is not nailed down.

I starting thinking that if I buy this kid $200 eyeglasses, he is going to lose them. And I am going to get very upset and start yelling and screaming. And he is going to claim that it's not his fault that he does not know where the glasses are. And I am going to start hyperventilating and be in need of medical care because I will have to spend another $200 to replace the lost glasses.

I start thinking - Do I really want this?  NOOOO!!!!

Since we are being ignored anyway, I head to the reception area to get a print out of our prescriptions so we can get out of this place. As I am driving home, I start to think about how I can get this kid some cool eyeglasses without spending $200 - since he is definitely going to lose them.

When I get home, I turn on my computer and start with an Internet search for B.U.M. Catcher frames. I find the exact frames on a discount prescription eyeglass website, but the company has terrible reviews from people who claim their lenses did not match their prescriptions and the company never returned their money. Yikes!

Do EyeGlass Bloggers Exist? YES!!!
Then I start wondering if there are any bloggers that specialize in discount eyeglasses, and low and behold, I hit the jackpot. The blog is called GlassyEyes and I start reading the first post called "Eyeglass Stores are for Suckers" - this blogger definitely has a way with words. I start reading more of his posts to see which websites he suggests that his readers buy from.

I end up on a website called EyeBuyDirect and start reading all the praise from Facebook fans who love the glasses that they bought from the site. Since this site does not sell B.U.M. designer frames, I use the photos that I took of my son in the B.U.M Catcher Frames as a guide and start looking for similar size and shape frames.

I found an EyeBuyDirect frame called the Rochester that is the same size specs and rectangular shape as the B.U.M. Catcher frame. The cost of this frame is $19.95 and price includes the anti-scratch lens, a protective case and a cleaning cloth !!!!!

Since this is an experiment, I don't buy any of the other options offered. I just type in my son's prescription and his pupillary distance and that's it. Since I notice the order form includes a discount coupon field, I do an Internet search that turns up an EyeBuyDirect coupon for 20% off with FREE shipping.  My total order comes to only $15.96. I am totally floored.

At this point, I don't know what to expect so I just go with the flow.  If this experiment turns out good, this will be the savings story of the year. If it turns out bad I am only out $15 and we go back to OptimEyes.

I put in my order on December 27th at 7pm and immediately get my first email from EyeBuyDirect thanking me for my order. At 8pm, I get another email with the following message -

We are pleased to advise that work on your new pair of prescription eyeglasses has begun! Our team is now allocating the selected frame(s) and lenses according to your particular needs. We expect work to last a couple of days and we will be sending you your new eyeglasses soon!

On December 28th at 1am (only 5 hours later), I get another email from EyeBuyDirect -

We are working on your lenses. This is the stage in which our optometric team cuts the lens to fit the frame and the prescription. Each lens has to be treated with utmost precision to fit each individual prescription and frame preference. We will probably have this finished by tomorrow and it should take another day or two to fit the lens in the frame you selected.

On December 30th at 1pm, I get yet another message -

We have completed work on your lens and will fit it in the frame soon. This may take a day or two since we might have to make slight adjustments to the lens. We don't want anything but a perfect fit to come out of our lab!

On January 1st at 2am, I get the message that they are done -

We're done! Your new eyeglasses are just about ready to go but before we send them let us please take one more look to make sure everything is OK. We are sure you will understand... By the way, did you know that there are seven (!!!) stages in which our team checks, then double checks, triple checks quadruple...

I don't hear back form EyeBuyDirect again until January 6th at 8am with the news that I have been waiting for -

Your new eyeglasses are ready and have been shipped to you via USPS on Friday 06 January, 2012. Please expect to receive them within 2 to 3 days (USA) / 5 to 7 days (Canada) from this date.

When I returned from work (today) on January 9th, my son's new glasses had arrived - within 3 days just as they stated.

So here is my son in his new $15 prescription eyeglasses.  Can you tell the difference between them and the B.U.M frames ??? The B.U.M. frames are a little more square, but other than that, these EyeBuyDirect Frames are very on point.

So I will be back online ordering my kid some backup eyeglasses from EyeBuyDirect. At these prices, I will get 2 extra pair with anti-glare lens and some of the other options. But one pair will stay at home where he cannot lose them ;)

And a special Thank You to the GlassyEyes blog for all the great discount prescription eyeglass information.  Bloggers rock!
