SCHOLARSHIP: Buick Achievers College Scholarships for STEM Students - DEADLINE 2/29

50 scholarships each up to $25,000 per year, renewable for 4 years, will be awarded ...

The GM Foundation is offering deserving students up to $25,000 each for their education (including tuition, books, housing, etc.) and it can be renewed every year.

This is the 6th year Buick Achievers scholarships will be awarded to students who excel in the classroom and give back to their communities.

Special consideration is given to students who are female, minorities, first-generation college students, military veterans and military dependents.

To be eligible for the program, high school seniors or current undergraduate students must be seeking a college degree in science, technology, engineering, math (STEM), or other eligible fields related to the automotive industry.

The 50 recipients of the Buick Achievers National Scholarship will receive an award of up to $25,000 per year, available for four years, and one additional year for those entering a qualified five-year engineering program.

The scholarships can be used toward the total cost of tuition, fees, books, supplies, required equipment, room and board and other allowable expenses, less other gift aid known at the time of application (scholarships, grants and other awards that do not have to be paid back).

“Our country is in need of STEM grads, as the focus on innovation and technology continues to sharpen,” said GM Foundation President Vivian Pickard. “Through the Buick Achievers Scholarship program, we are helping shape the next generation of leaders and innovators for the automotive industry and other sectors that are so important to the future of our country.”

For Buick Achiever, Kettering University alumnus and GM employee Frisco Pullom, this scholarship provided the freedom to focus on his education.

“My first semester after receiving scholarship funds, I was able to remove work and fundraising from my schedule, and I made the dean’s list for the first time in my academic career,” said Pullom. “After graduation, I was able to secure a position with General Motors as a value chain engineer.”

Since its inception in 2011, the Buick Achievers Scholarship Program has awarded more than $27 million in scholarships to 3,400 students. This year, the program will award 50 scholarships of up to $25,000 per year, renewable for up to four years or five years for qualified engineering programs.

Students from the United States and Puerto Rico are eligible.

EDUCATION: Textbook Rentals can save College Students (and their parents) some serious Money

Disclosure: I was compensated for my time to learn more about CampusBookRentals.com.  All opinions are my own.

My son's not a baby anymore...
It feels like only yesterday when my son graduated from kindergarten...

In one month's time, my son will graduate from middle school - and I am trying to figure out where all the time went. It feels like one day he was just a preschooler and now he will be starting high school in the fall.  The time is going so fast that it is hard to believe the photo above of him graduating from Kindergarten was taken 8 years ago - I feel so old.

And now that high school is on the horizon, all I can think about is that I have four years to figure out how to finance my son's college education and research scholarships and grants to help defer some of the cost. Both my sister and I received full ride scholarships to college (much to the delight of my parents) and I am hoping that my son can do the same - pray for us :)

But one thing that a scholarship will not pay for is textbooks. Back in the day, my parents laid out a small fortune each semester for my books and boy did my mom complain about the cost. But now students have more options for acquiring textbooks - including the option to rent them.

Since everyone can rent cars, designer handbags, and even wedding dresses, it makes perfect sense that students can now rent their textbooks. And companies like CampusBookRentals.com are making it easy for students to rent textbooks with perks that include -

-Saving 40-90% off of bookstore prices
-Free shipping both ways
-Ability to highlight in the textbooks
-Flexible renting periods

Watch the video below to find out how renting textbooks work -

CampusBookRentals.com also has a new program called RentBack (www.RentBack.com), which allows students to rent the textbooks they own to other students which could generate two to four times more money compared to what they'd make through buyback options.

So while I begin to research financial options to pay for my son's college education, it is good to know I also have options to pay for my son's college textbooks that can leave a few more dollars in the bank to finance my retirement :)

EDUCATION: Textbook Rentals can save College Students (and their parents) some serious Money

College Students have more options these days for buying Textbooks...

When I attended the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in 2011, I sat in on a technology social media session with Wall Street Journal technology columnist Walt Mossberg.  It was one of the best sessions that I attended at CES because Walt spoke about how the use of technology (mainly tablets) is changing the way students learn.

I can tell from watching my own son interact with a tablet that one day, most students will own a tablet and use it for a lot more than just email and games.

One of Walt Mossberg's predictions was that all textbooks would one day be digital and that the digital versions of the textbooks would need to be sold at an affordable price.

That prediction got me to thinking back to my time in college and the amount of money that I (and my parents) spent on buying my textbooks. Back then my only option was to go to the local campus bookstore and pay whatever the going price was for each book. And then sell the textbooks back to the same campus bookstore for whatever price they were willing to pay. Sometimes I was able to buy a textbook off of another student who had just taken the same class, but that did not happen very often.

In Walt Mossberg's CES presentation, he spoke about how students are paying a fortune for textbooks and how that is changing due to new options like textbook renting.

Since everyone can rent cars, designer handbags, and even wedding dresses, it makes perfect sense that students can now rent their textbooks. And companies like CampusBookRentals.com are making it easy for students to rent textbooks with perks that include -

- 40-90% off of bookstore prices
- FREE shipping both ways
- flexible renting periods

To give an example, take a typical textbook like Principles of Supply Chain Management where the list price for purchasing the book is around $177.  The rental price for the same book on CampusBookRentals.com is currently between $20 - $25 depending on the length of rental.

Watch the video below to find out how renting textbooks work (click here if video is not visible)-

I remember once when I told my mom how much my textbooks were going to cost for my first semester of college, she sighed as she handed me the cash and asked me if the books were made of gold.  I really wish I had had the option to rent my college textbooks back in the day - it would have saved my parents a ton of money and made my mom a whole lot happier.

So until Walt Mossberg's prediction of the future of affordable digital textbooks comes true, it is good to know that textbook renting is now an option for college students.

Enjoy!

Disclosure: I received a gift basket from
CampusBookRentals.com as a thank you for sharing information about their website with my readers.  All opinions are my own.

Funny how kids are not scared of a corpse as long at it is covered in candy...
This University of Detroit Mercy Halloween Party is one of the best in the city!

The Safety Street celebration was started 21 years ago to give the kids that live around the University of Detroit Mercy a safe place to trick-or-treat on Halloween.  The students of U of D construct a city made from cardboard and all the kids trick-or-treat along the cardboard town.  It is really too cool!

So come to the 21st Annual Safety Street dressed in your favorite costume. There will be trick-or-treating, free face painting, and a best costume contest at 6pm for grades K-5th.

I took my son to this event last year and he came home loaded down with candy.    Here are a few photos:

These characters lived in the Haunted Cardboard House...
Sorority Girls know how to party on Halloween. They gave out good candy too...
You never know who you're going to meet on this street...
