TRAVEL: Escape the Polar Vortex at Cedar Point's Castaway Bay Resort in Sandusky, OH #CPMoms

The weather outside is frightful, but Castaway is so delightful with a year round temperature of 82 degrees!!!

Disclosure: My son and I received a complementary one night stay at Castaway Bay Indoor Waterpark Resort as part of my involvement in Cedar Point's #CPMoms program.  All opinions are my own...

Polar Vortex Go Away!

We are barely into the month of February and I am already sick and tired of Winter!

January was the snowest month ever in Detroit with a record snowfall total of 32.9 inches.  My son's school has been closed for 5 unplanned days since the beginning of 2014 due to record cold temperatures averaging -15 to -30 degrees below zero.  There is so much snow piled up in front of my house that I can barely see the street when I have to pull out of my driveway.

This Polar Vortex is no joke and my son and I have been in desperate need of a Winter weather break.  While a trip to the Caribbean would be great, that kind of expense in not currently in our travel budget.

Escape to Castaway Bay!

So when Cedar Point in Sandusky, OH invited my family to join them for a complementary night's stay at their Caribbean themed Castaway Bay Indoor Waterpark Resort, I could not say "YES" fast enough.  While the weather outside is frightful, Castaway Bay is so delightful with an inside temperature of 82 degrees all year round - HOLLA!!!

Although I have been going every year to Cedar Point Amusement Park since I was 10 years old, this was my first time visiting Cedar Point's Castaway Bay Resort and this place made me forget for 24 hours that the Polar Vortex even exists.

After making the 2 hour drive to Sandusky, OH from Detroit in -5 degree weather, my son and I were ready for some relaxation and warmer temperatures. So after we parked and rolled our luggage through the freezing cold parking lot, it was wonderful to enter the Caribbean themed hotel lobby and see people walking around in bathing suits, shorts and flip flops.

Castaway Bay Resort features 237 hotel rooms and suites including family-oriented units, a 38,000-square-foot indoor waterpark with water activities for all ages, fitness center, 6,000-square-foot state-of-the-art arcade, a craft and child activity center, in-resort restaurants, retail shops, adjacent marina and space for meetings, group events and birthday parties.

Castaway Bay Starfish rooms are spacious with frigs and microwaves.
I Love a Room with a Frig & Microwave!

We were given a Starfish (standard) room on the 3rd floor of the resort. Starfish rooms have two double beds, a dorm size refrigerator, microwave, coffee maker and a private screened in balcony. The room can accommodate up to 5 people with an rollaway bed that costs an additional $10 per night.

I love resorts that have rooms with refrigerators and microwaves because they can save a family tons of money on food while on vacation. I stopped in Detroit before I left to buy snacks and cereal for breakfast. But even if I had not had time to stop, there is a Target down the street from the resort where I could buy extra food at a reasonable price.

Rooms at Castaway Bay also include FREE WIFI.  It is an open WIFI connection that anyone can use that is in the area of the hotel, which means the bandwidth is only strong enough to check your email, NOT to stream movies or videos.  Due to the low bandwidth of the hotel WIFI, while at the hotel I just used my smartphone data connection since it was stronger.

Castaway Bay Mango Mike's makes some great pizza!
No need to leave the resort for a great meal...

After checking into our room, Cedar Point treated all twenty-six #CPMoms and our families to dinner at the Castaway Bay Mango Mike's restaurant. We were treated to salad and pizza made on location in the restaurant's numerous pizza ovens.  My son is a very picky eater and he loved the pizza - and he ate enough for 2 people!

In addition to Mango Mike's, Castaway Bay has three other in-resort restaurants that include TGIFridays, Ebb and Eddy's Sweets and Eats, and the Big Daddy's Snack Shack inside of the waterpark.

The Castaway Bay Warter Park was totally relaxing!
The Caribbean lives inside of Castaway Bay Waterpark!

After dinner, we changed into our bathing suits and hit the Castaway Bay Waterpark.  My son loved everything about this waterpark including the watersides, water roller coaster, and especially the wave pool. Once he got into the wave pool he didn't leave for 2 hours!

Our experience in the Castaway Bay waterpark was without technology.  I purposely locked both our smartphones in the room safe so that we could both enjoy the moment.  And it was one of the best decisions that I have made in a long time.  We both were able to unwind and just relax.

The Castaway Bay Spa Hot Springs were wonderful!
While my son enjoyed the wave pool, I hit the Castaway Bay Spa Hot Springs.  The Hot Springs is huge and can hold tens of people.  I sat in front of one of the water jets and just let it relax my body. At the back of the spa, there is an exit where you can walk/swim to the outside spa area.  And at the end of the evening, my son and I went out to enjoy the snow coming down on my faces while we were incased in the ultra warm jetted water - it was totally wonderful and very peaceful.

Families that have young children will love the Castaway Bay Waterpark because it is the perfect size to keep an eye of your kids without running behind them all the time.  You can just sit in a deck chair and see them most anywhere that they go.  Castaway Bay has lots of lifeguards that do a good job making sure the kids are safe.

I got to try some delicious locally grown Ohio wines….
Local Ohio grown Wines are the perfect end to a great day...

After returning to our room, my son watched TV while I joined the other #CPMoms for a wine tasting of local Ohio area brands.  It was a wonderful way to end the evening.

I thought I might have trouble sleeping with all the kids that are in the hotel, but once I closed our room's door, it was nice and quiet and I fell right to sleep.  My son sleeps like a rock no matter where he is.

Castaway Bay waterpark wristbands are also good on the day that you check-out so you can take the kids to the waterpark again on your last day at the resort either before or after the 11am check-out time.

Look who we ran into on our way out of Castaway Bay? SNOOPY!
Goodbye Snoopy. We'll be back...

Castaway Bay was the perfect escape from this severe winter weather.  And as I write this post, and hear the spinning wheels of a car outside my house that is stuck on some ice and snow, I cannot wait to go back to Castaway Bay again for a another Polar Votex break.

REVIEW: Cedar Point Amusement Park's New Roller Coaster - The Gatekeeper #CPMomBlogger

The New Gatekeeper is a smooth piece of steel that cuts like a knife for one awesome ride...
The unofficial start of summer for my family happened on Saturday, May 18th for Mom Blogger Day at Cedar Point Amusement Park in Sandusky, OH.

My family has been making the 2 hour drive to Cedar Point every year since I was a kid and I started bringing my son to Cedar Point back in 2008. Cedar Point has one of the biggest collection of roller coasters in North America, so if you are a roller coaster lover, this is the amusement park for you.

For the second year in a row, Cedar Point invited local mom bloggers and their families as special guests with free admission and a group lunch at Cedar Point's Coral Courtyard located near the beautiful beachfront.  We totally enjoyed Cedar Point's Mom Blogger Day 2012. And this year's was even better.

The Gatekeeper is now my son's favorite roller coaster...
This year the special part of Mom Blogger Day was getting to ride Cedar Point's newest roller coaster - the Gatekeeper.

The Gatekeeper is a fiberglass and steel designed roller coaster that delivers 2 minutes, 40 seconds of the smoothest, most exciting ride of any roller coaster I have been on to date. As much as I love the smooth ride of Cedar Point's Millennium Force roller coaster, I love the Gatekeeper even more.

The Gatekeeper lifts you 170 feet in the air for a vertical drop of 164 feet - but with a twist.  The Gatekeeper has wings that make you feel like you are flying like Super-man. Once riders crest the top of the first lift hill, the coaster train will rotate 180 degrees to the right, turning riders upside down before plummeting toward the ground at speeds of more than 65 mph - So Sweet!

In addition, the ride does a Zero-G-Roll which takes riders through two support towers that dominate Cedar Point’s new Main Entrance. The entire front of the park was totally redone to add these new towers so it seems like you are going to end up the parking lot before you turn back toward the park to fly over guests that are entering the park below.

I love roller coasters with a smooth ride and the Gatekeeper cuts as smooth as a knife in butter.  I loved every turn, upside down roll and twist. When the ride was over, my son and I declared the Gatekeeper the coolest ride at Cedar Point. We wanted to ride it again, but the with a 90 minute wait, we decided we would just have to come back and do it again on another day.

I loved the Wicked Twister - my son thought he was going to die...
My second favorite ride at Cedar Point was the Wicked Twister. While this ride is not new to Cedar Point, it was our first time riding it. Usually the line is very long. But with everyone in line for The Gatekeeper, the line for the Wicked Twister was only 15 minutes long.

The Wicked Twister takes off so fast that you most certainly leave your brain back on the ground as you go back and forth climbing two twisting towers at breakneck speed.

I loved the Wicked Twister. My son said he felt like he was going to die. So while he won't ride it again, I certainly will. But while the Wicked Twister is cool, the Gatekeeper still is the coolest of the cool.

We bonded - over roller coasters :)
My son and I had a blast at Cedar Point.  There is nothing like bonding while riding roller coasters. So don't you wait until the end of Summer to make your way to Cedar Point. If you are a roller coaster fan, the Gatekeeper and all the other awesome rides at Cedar Point are totally worth the trip.

Enjoy!

Disclosure: I was invited to Cedar Point for Mom Blogger Day. I and my family and friends received complementary admission, parking, lunch and gift bags. We paid for transportation. I have been loving Cedar Point since I was my son's age and all opinions are my own :)

REVIEW: #HalloWeekends at Cedar Point in Sandusky, OH are Scary Good for the Whole Family!

I had a Good Time at my first HalloWeekend...

I have gone to Ceder Point Amusement Park in Sandusky, OH almost every year since I was kid, but I had never been for a HalloWeekend. For those who don't know, HalloWeekends at Cedar Point is when the park is transformed for Halloween during the weekends in September and October.  And last week, I was invited to attend Mom Bloggers HalloWeekends Day at Cedar Point.

All photo taken by Jackie Harper
The fun begins while driving up the causeway leading to the park with little bark covered stake signs on the side of the road warning you that the roller coasters are not going to be the only scary things in the park.  Cedar Point even updated their welcome entrance sign to put their mascots Snoopy and Charlie Brown in Halloween costumes. In fact the entire park is decorated for Halloween including tons of skeletons, giant inflatables ogres and spiders and lots of pumpkins.

We had a great time, but make sure you dress for the weather...
Dress for the Cold Weather...
The day that we went to the park, the weather turned cold (plus it rained) but we still have a great time.  But remember to dress warmly for HalloWeekends (ski jackets, hats, gloves, long underwear) since Cedar Point is surrounded by water and riding a roller coaster that is going over 100 miles per hour in cold weather can chill your bones, especially if you are riding after dark.

Be sure take a ride on the Sky Ride so you can get a bird's eye view of the entire park.

While the park gets scary after dark, there are plenty of family friendly rides, shows and attractions during the day including -

· Skeleton Crew— An exciting spectacle of acrobatics and aerial acts taking place throughout the day in Cedar Point’s new Celebration Plaza!

· The Goodtime Ghouls: A Halloween Hullabaloo— An energetic musical revue featuring a mix of rockabilly, swing, pop and disco in the Good Time Theater.

· Gypsy Fortune Tellers— Find out what’s in the cards for you as you venture into Frontiertown.

· Charlie Brown’s Funtime Frolics— Join Charlie, Snoopy and the PEANUTS gang for music, stories and spooky surprises.

· The Magical House on Boo Hill--- Whimsical illusions await at every corner in the topsy-turvy house just outside the Blue Streak roller coaster.

· Monster Midway Invasion Celebration— Friendly monsters and characters take over the Cedar Point Main Midway with dancing, parade floats and music every day at 4 p.m.

· PEANUTS™ Halloween Show and Kids’ Costume Contest— Bring your little pirates and princesses for pre-school competitions at 2 p.m. and grade-school competitions at 2:45 p.m. every Saturday and Sunday in the Blue Streak Plaza.

· Sideshow: A Carnival of Magic— Step right up for amazing illusions and jaw-dropping suspense!

The Eternity Infirmary - Scary and Funny...
The scariest thing that we did (other than ride the roller coasters) was to go through the Haunted Eternity Infirmary.  This hospital is full of blood, guts, body parts and ghoulish doctors that want to scare you to death. I thought it was funny, the kids did not. The "doctors" are not allowed to touch you as you walk through the halls of death, but they are allowed to pop out of no where and they love to whisper cute sayings in your ears as you pass by.  The place looks small and you may think you can walk through it in no time flat, but it actually takes 10-15 minutes until you escape - so be warned :)

Best Ribs I have had in a while...
During our visit, it started to rain - heavily!!! So we took the train to Frontier Land and waited out the rain while having lunch at the Chuck Wagon Restaurant. My son and I spent $25 to share a full rack of ribs with two sides and a homemade biscuit.  I could not believe how great those ribs were.  The sauce was wonderful and the meat just fell off the bone. And we actually fought over the biscuit.  I highly recommend this restaurant if you love ribs - who knew Cedar Point could cook food this good.

The Cedar Point Museum is great for waiting out the rain...
Unfortunately, the rain continued pass lunch, but we (and lots of other people) found another warm and friendly place to wait out the weather  - the park's museum.  I had never been to the museum before in it was a pleasure to walk through it and see the winners of the roller coaster design contest along with models of existing Cedar Point roller coasters. I also found out during our tour of the museum that Cedar Point has been in the Guinness Book of World Records 3 times and has received the Golden Ticket Award as the "Best Amusement Park in the World."  The kids loved that the museum gave them Halloween candy.

Don't let the look fool ya - he was loving his snack from CJ's Provisions
CJ's Provisions is a must visit - your tummy will thank you!
Cedar Point treated us to a snack that embodies Halloween.  We went to CJ's Provisions near the Millennium Force roller coaster for caramel apples, cookies and a cup of the best cider I have ever had.

This beautiful sunset was the perfect end to our day at the park...
My first Cedar Point HalloWeekend was great, despite the rain.  We all had a great time and it was nice to see the park all dressed up for Halloween.  Since we had a long drive back to Detroit, we left the park just before 7pm and was greeted with this great sunset on our way home. It was the perfect end to a nice HalloWeekend.

For more information on Cedar Point HalloWeekends, visit the Cedar Point Website and follow Cedar Point on Twitter and Facebook.

Enjoy!
