Elves are needed to help Neighborhood Service Organization (NSO) bring cheer to Detroit area individuals and families who may otherwise not have a holiday.
Registration is now open for the organization’s annual Holiday Elf Program, aimed at bringing the spirit of the holidays to its consumers, which include families with children, seniors, developmentally disabled adults and children and homeless individuals. Corporations and companies, families, individuals, departments and organizations are invited and encouraged to become an NSO Elf.
VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES FOR EVERY BUDGET
NSO Holiday Elf opportunities exist for every budget - from adopting a family and purchasing them holiday gifts to hosting a Housewarming party that collects and then donates new household essentials to formerly homeless individuals who NSO is helping to move off the streets into a place they can call home.
“The NSO Holiday Elf program gives the community’s most vulnerable individuals and families the holiday happiness they would not have without the help of our NSO Elves” said Sheilah P. Clay, president and CEO of NSO. “Everyone deserves holiday cheer and the hope for a brighter future. We are grateful to our NSO Elves for making that possible for so many.”
Elves are needed in the following areas:
• NSO Bell Building Giving Tree – There are 155 individuals, once homeless, who live at the NSO Bell Building. Many are lonely. Your gift reminds them they are not alone. Elves will receive a resident’s name and wish list for items totaling no more than $25.
• NSO HGMSC Adopt-a-Family – Families in need are served at NSO’s Harper-Gratiot Multi-Service Center. Elves will receive a Family Wish List with the ages, sizes and wishes of each family
member in order to provide them with holiday gifts.
• NSO Youth Programs Holiday Gift Cards - NSO Youth Initiatives Project (YIP) and Youthlink programs serve young men and women from the city's most vulnerable neighborhoods. NSO provides them with leadership and community activism skills, education, career awareness, tutoring and mentoring. A $20 gift card to Target, Meijer, Footlocker, etc., will be a welcome holiday gift for these future leaders.
• NSO Homeless Recovery Services Winter Warmth Wish List - Hundreds of homeless individuals with nowhere else to go spend winter nights literally sitting in the cold hard chairs at the NSO Tumaini Center. You can warm their hands, feet and hearts by donating items on the Winter Warmth Wish List.
• NSO Older Adult Services Wish List – Make a happier holiday for older adults with mental illness in Wayne and Oakland counties who are served by NSO. Many of these seniors have no family to count on for their care. Often, NSO staff members are their only visitors and care leaders. Your donations to the wish list will give them a gift this season.
• NSO Life Choices Wish List for Developmentally Disabled Children and Adults – Developmentally disabled children and adults served by NSO Life Choices enjoy simple games, puzzles, craft projects and other toys. NSO Elves can supply these items used throughout the year to help improve motor and social skills.
• NSO Homeless to Home - A Place to Call Home Housewarming Parties – Help NSO provide housing for the homeless by hosting an A Place to Call Home Housewarming Party. Individuals, families and organizations are being sought to collect new household goods for formerly homeless individuals. These items will be used to outfit apartments for men and women moving from the streets into the NSO Bell Building and NSO’s other supportive housing locations across the city.
