Scarlett Johansson wants us to Go Green, Save Green, and Save Calories with SodaStream

As a blogger, I get invited to more than a few media events - both live in-person and via live stream. And yesterday, I received an interesting invite from the folks at SodaStream to a media event today where they would announce the name of their first global brand ambassador.

I was intrigued by the invitation because SodaStream has been in the media a lot of late showing off their various machines that allow people to make soda in their homes.  Since I have wanted to try out a SodaStream for sometime now, I made it my business to attend the media event today to learn more about the product - and get the scoop on who the A-list celebrity is that will be the new face of the brand.

SodaStream CEO Daniel Birnbaum took the stage and told a story of how he received a call at his office in Tel Aviv about an "American in Paris" who was traveling with her SodaStream and needed a replacement carbinator for the machine.  Since he takes pride in the fact that the SodaStream company is customer focused, Daniel decided to make sure this customer got her part quickly. But what really took him back was when he received a thank you note from the customer that he had helped and found the American who loved her SodaStream so much that she traveled with it to Paris was none other than actress Scarlett Johansson.

That thank-you note started a friendship between Daniel and Scarlett that lead to her being named today as the new face of the SodaStream brand.

Scarlett Johansson took the stage to tell us how happy she was to be part of the SodaStream family.  "I love this product.  It's really changed my life." said Johansson.  "I don't feel guilty about the beverages I enjoy at home. And I like that I can have a party and not have trash bags full of waste. I have been pushing it on my friends and family for years…"

What is SodaStream?
If you have not heard of this product, SodaStream is the machine that enables tap water to be turned into sparkling water and soda.

Does it really save you money? I plan to find out for myself!!!
All during today's press conference, I found my frugal self thinking that this all sounds really great, but does this product really save you money? Well I plan to find out for myself since SodaStream will be providing me with a complementary machine so I can try out the product for myself - HOLLA!

I personally cannot wait to try out the Ocean Spray Cranberry Juice Drink flavors since I love cranberry juice - just not the cranberry juice cost.  I also want to try out the Happy Hour Cocktail Mixers, especially the Margarita and Pina Colada flavors.

My son donating school supplies and GE smart bulbs to his principal

One way to help children is to donate to our public schools...

On November 8th, I wrote a blog post telling everyone about GE Lighting generously donating Energy Smart Longer Life Light Bulbs to my son's school. During the month of November, GE Lighting has partnered with Champions for Kids, an organization that encourages people to give to children via simple service projects in their community, to teach classrooms and charities how to save energy and money by switching out regular lightbulbs for energy smart ones.

I and my son were given the opportunity by Collective Bias and GE Lighting to be part of a Champions for Kids simple service project to donate GE smart energy lightbulbs and school supplies purchased at my local Walmart store to my son's public school.

Today, my son and I packed up the donation and took the bag of supplies and GE smart energy bulds to his school.  We met with the principal, Ms. Livingston to explain the donation and get her thoughts on the importance of parents doing simple service projects that directly impact kids and the importance of teaching kids and staff at schools how to conserve energy.

FIML: What do you think of Champions for Kids partnership with GE Lighting to encourage parents to give back to kids through simple service projects?

Principal Livingston: I am thrilled about the partnership between GE and Champions for Kids. At our school, we talk a lot about ways in which our students can provide services and support to the community. When parents and other companies or organizations echo this message it only reinforces it for our students.

FIML: How is your school focusing on energy awareness with students and staff?

Principal Livingston: We have discussed a few ways in which students can conserve energy like turning off the lights when a room is not being used and using natural light as an alternative to electricity. Any small change can make a huge impact if we all commit to doing it.

As part of the donation, I included a copy of the GE Lighting Teachers Kit which includes lesson plans on teaching kids about conserving energy. The kit teaches that CFL lighting uses 70 - 75% less energy than regular incandescent bulbs. Teaching our kids to save energy also saves money and is better for the environment too. Less energy used in homes and businesses means less pollution from power generation.

Energy education is one way that we can leave a better planet for our kids. I truly believe that If we all could do at least one simple service project to help kids, the collective impact could be life changing.

We are coming up on that time of the year where gift buying becomes an actual sport for most people. But in the midst of all the buying, I feel it's important not to forget to give back to those in need. And one of my favorite ways to give back this year has been through Champions for Kids.

Last March, my son did a simple service project with Champions for Kids of donating extra school supplies to his school.  And I can tell you that both my son's principal and teachers were overjoyed to receive those supplies because of how tight school budgets are these days and how much basic supplies are needed in the classrooms.  But for me, the real joy came in seeing my son's proud face when he handed over the donation.  Kids are growing up these days with such a sense of entitlement that I am for any type of experience where my son is on the giving end instead of the receiving end.

So when I was given another chance to do another Champions for Kids simple service project, I could not have been happier - especially when that project also teaches classrooms how to save money on energy.

MOVIE REVIEW: Disneynature's Chimpanzee

A perfect movie to see on Earth Day....

On Tuesday night, my son and I had the pleasure of going to an advance movie screening for the new Disneynature documentary Chimpanzee. The film tells the story of a baby chimp who the film crew nicknamed Oscar and Oscar's family who all reside in the jungles of the Ivory Coast and Uganda in Africa.

Oscar lives with the many generations of his family and the film takes the audience into their day to day lives as they struggle to survive.  After Oscar's family is attacked by another band of chimps, he finds himself orphaned until a very unexpected ally takes him in.

This film is a must see due to the wonderful way the story of Oscar is shown to the audience through beautiful cinematography.  Not since I first saw "Out of Africa" back in 1985 have I been so taken with the scenery of a movie.  There are breathtaking aerial shots of the jungle and fascinating time lapsed videography of moving ant colonies, spinning spiderwebs and rain soaked mushroom patches.  Everyone is the audience was just spellbound by the beauty of nature that was shown in this movie.

The story of Oscar is heartwarming from the loving interaction shown between Oscar and his mom, to the hilarious sequences of how chimps break open nuts and eat fire ants without the fire ants eating them, to the heartbreaking scenes showing Oscar left all alone to fend for himself after the death of his mother.

Since this movie will be seen by lots of small children, I think Disney handled some very difficult  nature related issues very well by not showing any animal deaths in the film, but instead implying with strong music and abrupt cutaways that a necessary part of the "circle of life" was happening.

Chimpanzee is a wonderful movie that is perfect for everyone to see as part of the celebration of Earth Day and it opens in theaters on Earth Day, Friday, April 20, 2012.

Make sure you stay to the very end of the movie so you can see scenes of some of the difficult situations with which the camera and film crews that made this movie had to deal.  It will make you appreciate the film even more.

For every moviegoer who sees Chimpanzee during the film’s opening week (April 20-26, 2012), Disneynature will make a donation to the Jane Goodall Institute through the Disney Worldwide Conservation Fund in order to protect chimpanzees and their habitats.
