How To Tweet Your Way to Amazing Travel Deals

Twitter isn't just a networking site, it's a powerful tool that can save you money and change how you plan your travel - Wendy Perrin, Condé Nast Traveler Magazine
.

While reading my October 2009 Condé Nast Traveler Magazine (yes, I got the subscription for free), I came across a wonderful article written by Wendy Perrin about how to use Twitter to score amazing travel deals. I love Twitter and have used Twitter to get all kinds of great deals and freebies so the article was right up my alley. I liked the article so much that I tore it out of the magazine and kept it so that I could share it now with all of you.

As part of the article, Wendy gave a list of travel companies that she recommends to follow on Twitter. I have created a Twitter list with those companies that all of you can follow by clicking here.

Enjoy!

========================== ===========================

How to Tweet Your Way to Amazing Deals
by Wendy Perrin /Published October 2009/ Condé Nast Traveler

One evening last summer, 450 people snagged round–trip airline tickets to Europe for a mere $250, including taxes. The spectacularly low fares were available for only a few hours; by the next morning, Delta had discovered its pricing glitch and hiked the fare again. How did those people learn about the deal in time? By following Rick Seaney, CEO of FareCompare.com, on Twitter. Other lucky travelers last summer were able to nab $9 JetBlue tickets from JFK to Nantucket and $444 round–trips on United from the West Coast to Australia. How? By watching JetBlue and United on Twitter: Those airlines are giving their followers first dibs on some of their steepest sales.
.
You may know Twitter only as the butt of late–night comedians’ jokes, and if you haven’t spent much time on Twitter, it’s easy to dismiss it as a silly social–networking fad for narcissists telling one another what they ate for lunch. But I’ve been on Twitter for more than a year now, and I’m here to tell you that the perks you can glean from it are no joke. Ignore it and you’ll miss out on significant travel benefits, including deals you can’t find elsewhere.

The trick to Twitter is figuring out who to follow—meaning, whose Twitter updates (“tweets”) to receive. Follow the right people and you’ve got an instant personalized travel news feed on your mobile phone or computer. You’ll be among the first to hear about airfare sales, get access to steep Twitter–only discounts on hotel rooms or last–minute island–vacation packages, hear timely advice from travel experts, maybe even win a free hotel night, a day pass to an airline lounge club, or bonus frequent–flier miles. Moreover, if you’ve got a complaint about a travel company that has a presence on Twitter, you can lodge it via a tweet. If the company doesn’t resolve the issue, the viral nature of Twitter means that thousands of others can know about your gripe within minutes.
.
Although you’ll find a gazillion travel entities on Twitter—from tourist boards (e.g., @VisitBritain) to airline lounge clubs (e.g., @AdmiralsClub) to hotel company CEOs (e.g., @SimonFCooper of Ritz–Carlton)—you’d have no reason to follow most of them unless you’re headed to a specific destination. Some, however, are worth following regularly for the information, assistance, or perks that they offer and which you can’t easily find elsewhere. These people and companies use Twitter to answer travelers’ questions, to sell distressed inventory, and/or to resolve complaints.

MOVIE REVIEW: Letters to Juliet

Beautiful Eye Candy

Last Tuesday, I went to see an advance screening of "Letters to Juliet" at the Birmingham 8. I received the passes courtesy of Summit Entertainment.
.
I knew that I would enjoy this film because I like light romantic comedies, filmed in beautiful places, that have happy endings - and this film definitely delivers on all counts.
.
The story is about wanna-be writer Sophie (played by Amanda Seyfried) who goes to Verona, Italy with her neglectful fiancee (played by Gael Garcia Bernal). While in the city made famous for being the setting of "Romeo and Juliet", Sophie discovers a group of women who have made it their jobs to answer letters written by love-sick woman looking for romantic help from Juliet. Sophie discovers a letter written 50 years ago and decides to answer it. This kicks off a series of events where Claire, the 65 year old letter writer (played by Vanessa Redgrave), follows Sophie's advice and returns to Verona to look for her first love.

The movie follows the adventures of Sophie and Clarie's grandson Charlie (played by Christopher Egan) as they help Claire to find her long lost love and discover love and adventure of their own.

All the actors are just a backdrop for the real star of this movie - the city of Verona and the surrounding countryside. The scenes of Italy in this movie are just beautiful. It is so wonderful to watch that it will make you want to go home, google Verona, and buy some plane tickets. I felt the same way when I watched scenes from the movie "Under the Tuscan Sun".

This movie is pure eye candy - light, funny, and beautiful to watch. "Letters to Juliet" opens in theatres on May 14, 2010.

About Hearing Loss

Hearing loss affects more than 36 million Americans. While most are the result of the normal aging process, the number of people younger than 65 with hearing loss is growing due in part to the popularity of MP3 players and earbuds.

Hearing loss can affect people of all ages. According the American Academy of Audiology, the most common causes of hearing loss are genetic predispositions, ear diseases, noise exposure (music, industrial and military), ototoxic medicines and head trauma.

Hearing loss can make it difficult to hear a conversation in a noisy environment such as a restaurant, or cause constant ringing or pain in the ears.

Although most hearing loss is permanent, an audiologist can determine the best treatment to improve hearing, including hearing aids, assistive listening devices and hearing rehabilitation.

To learn more about the services and treatments offered at Henry Ford's Division of Audiology, visit www.henryford.com.
