TRAVEL REVIEW: Blue Man Group at Universal Orlando CityWalk - AWESOME!!! #FamilyForward

The Family Forward Blogger Retreat at Universal Orlando provides bloggers and their families with hotel, food, park passes, and unique experiences at a significantly reduced price. All opinions are my own.

Seeing the Blue Man Group was the highlight of my son's trip to Orlando
Blue Man Group Orlando is Fun, Exciting, and Great for all Ages...

When I found out that as part of attending the Family Forward Bloggers Retreat over the long Labor Day weekend at Universal Orlando that my son and I would be seeing the Blue Man Group show, I was very excited. I had never seen the Blue Man Group perform live before but I had heard of their high energy show that is part comedy, part music, and part outrageous.

But I did wonder how my 14 year old son (who has a short attention span) would fare during the almost 2 hour show.  Well I should not have worried because he L-O-V-E-D the show as much if not more than I did. I can honestly say that the show is awesome and I could not believe how fast the time went by. And how people of all ages were loving The Blue Man Group.

If you have never been to a Blue Man Group performance then all I can say is you don't know the fun you are missing.  The show started out with hilarious messages flashing across the monitors, one of which reminded us that we would be embarrassed if cell phones and cameras were used during the show, so all my photos that you see in this post were taken during the show's over the top finale which involves lots of toilet paper and 6 foot bouncing balls.

And speaking of embarrassment, don't show up late to a Blue Man Group performance because they have a surprise waiting for an unlucky latecomer that will make you the butt of many jokes.

The show was highly entertaining and was kind of an all out assault on the senses.  The music was loud, the colors were brilliant, the comedy was off the charts, and there was tons of flying paint. My son laughed so hard that I thought he was going to fall out of his seat. And the 3 year old and 5 year old boys sitting behind me were laughing so uncontrollably at times that they actually did fall out of their seats.

It's all about Family...
The Blue Man Group Orlando show likes to make fun of how we tend to use technology to connect online with people instead of connecting with friends and family in real life.  So the overall message of the show is that we get more "happiness hormones" by being in a group together and by sharing group experiences.

Since the Family Forward conference was all about families connecting through shared experiences, this show fit right in to the overall theme that families can bond better by communicating less through smartphones and more through human connections.

For families who come to the show, the Blue Man Group website has added a special page for parents with FAQ's to explain who the show is appropriate for and how to prepare your kids for the show. The website also has links for activities that are inspired by the show's content that families can do after the show. And there are also lesson labs for educators that go into the science and technology that is used during the show.

Can you tell that my son enjoyed meeting the Blue Man Group?
After the show was over, we all were given the special opportunity to meet the Blue Man Group and take photos with them.  I think you can tell by the photo above that meeting the Blue Man Group was one of the highlights of my son's trip to Orlando, so much so that I had to get him a Blue Man Group t-shirt as a souvenir of the evening.

If you will be vacationing in Orlando I highly recommend checking out the Blue Man Group show at Universal Orlando CityWalk -  It will be an experience that you will not forget.

Enjoy!

GIVEAWAY: Master TSA-accepted Locks allow less luggage worries for Holiday traveling - ENDS 12/29 (CLOSED)

Photo Credit: Flickr Creative Commons via Photopin
Master Lock Provides Tips for Travelers to Keep Safety and Security a Priority...

Tis the season where seeing friends and family becomes the number one priority. As people travel home to be near their loved ones, Master Lock wants to encourage everyone to be safe, and not sorry.

To keep your home and family secure during the holiday season’s hustle and bustle, Master Lock offers the following tips to help travelers keep safety top-of-mind:

Keep that lived in look. In 2010, more than 1.8 million homes were burglarized with 400,000 of those burglaries taking place between November and December. Making the home appear active while away can discourage potential break-ins. Set a timer for both inside and outside lights to switch on and off and turn a radio or TV on to create the illusion that someone is home. Hold your mail deliveries at usps.com, and contact your other providers to stop newspaper and package drop-offs while you’re away.

Toast don’t post. Resist the temptation to update your social network accounts with travel plans to avoid having the news of the unoccupied status of your home fall into the wrong hands. Instead, spend that time in the company of friends and family toasting to health and happiness, and wait to post photos of holiday fun until you
return home.

Check (Twice) Before Travel. Before departing for a holiday destination, check the schedules and status of your flight, train or traffic route to stay aware of delays, bad weather and other potential changes. Checking in on the status of your method of travel will guarantee you are prepared for any delays and keep you calm during the holiday rush. And don’t forget to double-check your travel documents before leaving the house.

Activity and Emergency Kits Are Key. Whether traveling by train or car, always carry a first aid kit stocked with bottled water, snacks, medication, bandages, a flashlight and cell phone charger. Should you encounter a problem or a long distance between rest-stops on your route, these items can help keep you nourished and your travel companions busy. Keep children occupied by bringing fun games or movies to lessen driving distractions. If traveling by car, have it inspected by a mechanic or someone you trust before a long journey to make sure all systems are primed and tires are filled.

Master 4688D lock is TSA-accepted
Lock It Down & Carry It On. A reported 200 items are stolen each day from JFK Airport, one of the busiest airports in the world. Keep your valuables including cell phones, wallets, watches/jewelry and other important property safe by carrying them with you at all times and locking them up while on-the-go. In addition, use generic luggage, be mindful of wearing flashy jewelry and dress down to prevent being targeted for theft.

Did you know you can secure checked and carry-on luggage with a TSA-accepted lock? I did not know this until I was sent for review the Master 4688D TSA-accepted Combination Lock which can be used while traveling to prevent unauthorized access to my luggage.

How do TSA-accepted locks work?
TSA inspectors screen every passenger's baggage before it is placed on an airplane. While their technology allows them to electronically screen bags, there are times when they need to physically inspect a piece of luggage. Although I don't travel by air very often, I know that the checked luggage of friends I have traveled with to Blogging conferences have been opened by the TSA for inspection.

The TSA has worked with several companies, including Master Lock, to develop locks that can be opened by security officers using universal "master" keys so that the locks don't have to be cut off. So buying one of these TSA-accepted locks will allow you to keep your valuables safe while allowing the TSA agents to do their job.

The Master 4688D Combination Lock features -
- Master key opening that allows TSA screeners to inspect and relock baggage without damaging the lock
- Unique flexible cable to resist abuse from baggage handling equipment
- 3 dials which allows you to set-your-own combination and reset for convenience
- Matching locks and cables to coordinate with popular baggage colors
- Bright colors to allow baggage identification
- 1-1/8" (29mm) wide durable metal body

Check out the following video on the Master TSA-accepted lock

The Master 4688D TSA-accepted Combination Lock can also be used for more than just airline luggage.  It is also great for securing cabinets, computer bags and briefcases - anywhere you are currently using a traditional combination lock.

The Master 4688D TSA-accepted Combination Locks retail for around $10 each and are available on Amazon, the Master Lock website, and in retail stores.

Blogging & the City 2.0 (Part 1): My Adventures in New York City for #BlogHer12

I finally used the New York City Subway...cheapest way to get around
My photo of Times Square - It's busy - day and night...
Doing New York City, BlogHer Style....

I recently returned from visting New York City to attend my third BlogHer Conference. BlogHer is the largest female blogging conference in the world with reportedly almost 5000 women attending this year. This is the second time that the conference has been in New York City (hence the post name Blogging & the City 2.0) and again my partner in crime and travel buddy for this conference trip was Laura from LauraInTheMotorCity.com.

BlogHer is still a great value for the Money...
I have saved lots of money over the years on my vacations by traveling as part of business conferences and BlogHer is one of the cheapest blogging conferences to attend. The conference fee has remained only $199 since the conference inception and that fee includes all sessions, daily breakfast and lunch and nightly parties. The price also includes the admittance to the Vendor Hall where brands and bloggers connect and massive swag is available for all.

The BlogHer organizers always negotiate very reasonable hotel rates for attendees. This year's conference was held at the Hilton and attendees only paid $229 per night, which is great for a 4 star hotel in downtown Manhattan only two blocks from Radio City Music Hall.  The Hilton did have its challenges, including slow elevators and less than optimal air conditioners, but overall it was a nice hotel.

Thanks to BlogHer, I got to dance with The Radio City Rockettes! - FOR FREE!!!
Lots to do in the Big Apple..
I had a really great time this year at BlogHer and had some extraordinary experiences in New York including Dancing with the Radio City Rockettes and dining at the famed New York Ruth's Chris Steak House as part of the Glamorous Moms Luncheon hosted by metro Detroit's own Shannon Lazovskin of the Glamorous Moms blog. I will be sharing stories about all those adventures in future posts. But in this post I just want to share some of Laura's and my New York adventures during our first day in the city, before the conference started.

During our 2010 trip to New York for BlogHer10, Laura and I played it pretty safe and stayed close to the hotel and only took cabs to get around. But this year, we decided to venture out more and also try out the New York city subway system.

Pazza Notte - still YUMMY!
But before we started our adventures, we decided to have lunch at an old favorite - Pazza Notte. We discovered this Italian restaurant on our trip to BlogHer10.  The food is wonderful and the location is only 2 blocks from the Hilton. In 2010, the food was a real bargain since we paid only $19 for a 3 course lunch called "The Recession Special". Although the price for the same meal had increased to $25, our stomachs still could not resist eating there again and the Pollo Alla Cajun was just as wonderful as I remembered.

New York City Subways - Cheap but Hot as Hell!
After lunch we decided to take the subway to visit Ground Zero. This was both Laura's and my first time using the subway so we really did not know what to expect, other than it being the cheapest way to get around New York City.

Laura was able to figure out the subway system using Google Maps on her iPhone so getting around was not an issue. But what was an issue was the temperature of the subway platform. Since the subway is underground, I of course thought it would be cool. But the temperature was off the charts HOT and HUMID, two things that I don't do well. So I was very glad when the train finally came to take us to Ground Zero.

Century 21- A Discount Designer Shopping Mecca
When we exited the subway, we were in the financial district which is also home to one of the best designer bargain stores in New York City - Century 21. I had only seen Century 21 on cable television shows like "The Look for Less" so I knew I had to go in and at least walk around.

The inside of the store looks like a Walmart (no thrills), but with all designer clothing at cheap prices. There was so much merchandise on so many floors that it was hard to know where to start. I am not a fan of organized chaos, but the prices in this store are hard to beat. If you are a bargainista visiting New York, this store is a must stop.

Ground Zero - Lovely and Sobering...
Getting to Ground Zero takes some patience. First you have to get a FREE vistor pass online at http://www.911memorial.org/visitor-passes and pick the date and time that you want to visit. When you get to the gate, you have to have your Visitor Pass out at all times since you will go through multiple police check points, including a bag search. But the experience it worth the process.

My photo of the 9/11 memorial - The fountain is beautiful
Laura at the memorial wall
The designers of the 9/11 memorial have done a wonderful job. The memorial is both lovely, with the beautiful fountains, and sobering with the names of the victims forever etched in granite on the site of both World Trade towers.

As we stood there watching the fountains, Laura and I remembered where we each were when the towers fell.  Others around us were having similar conversations and touching the engraved names with reverence. I am very glad that we made the time to finally visit.

Police are Everywhere in Manhattan...
One thing that I noticed while traveling in Manhattan is the heavy police presence. There are pairs of police officers in all the tourist areas, seemingly on every other block - day and night, regardless of the weather. During one of our city tours later in our trip, the tour guide told us that Manhattan is now one of the safest places to walk day and night because of all the police. I have to say that I felt really safe especially as Laura and I walked from the Financial district to our next stop in Tribeca.

Aire Ancient Bath House...HEAVEN!!!
Before we left for BlogHer12, Laura sent me an email asking if I wanted to be part of her review of a business in Tribeca called Aire Ancient Baths. I am usually all in for a new experience that I don't have to pay for, but the term "ancient baths" brought up visions of ancient Romans sitting around naked in steam rooms - not pretty. But I figured I had nothing to lose by going. I am happy to say that my initial thoughts were way off base.

The Aire Lobby - Photo Credit: Aire Ancient Baths
As we entered Aire Ancient Baths, we were greeted in a lobby that contained comfy couches and a wall of relaxing scented candles. After we filled out our forms, we walked to the women's locker room to change into our swimsuits. We actually did not have to bring our own swimsuits since Aire provides everything from swimsuits to robes to bath shoes, all included in the price of service.

The Baths - Photo Credit: Aire Ancient Baths
The baths are located on the lower level and are pools of water of varying temperatures ranging from hot to cold, plus steam and massage rooms. Keeping on our bath shoes was extremely important since the floors are made of marble. We started in the salt water pool which was my favorite of all them all. Due to the salt in the water, it is impossible to sink in this pool so you just lay on top of the water. After the salt pool, we were told to go into the steam room so the salt would be absorbed into our skin. My skin ended up feeling like a soft baby's bottom.

We next went into the massage room for our 15 minute massages. Since the walk to Tribeca was a long one, the massages were wonderful, especially of my feet. After only 10 minutes, I felt like a new woman.

We tried some of the other pools and Laura even tried the 50 degree cold pool - brave woman.  The whole experience was wonderful and I cannot thank Laura enough for inviting me to tag along. The staff even dried our swimsuits for us while we showered. Click here to read Laura's full review of Aire Ancient Baths including prices.

Street Vendor Eating for only $5....
After our great time at Aire Ancient Bath House, Laura and I took the subway back toward our hotel and started thinking about what we could have for dinner. We didn't want to spend lots of money on food in New York. Since most of our meals were included as part of the conference, we only had to cover a few meals on our own. Walking back to the hotel, we found a Subway where we bought a meal for a decent price. But we also found during our trip that licensed street vendors cooked some great meals (including huge gyros and other sandwiches) that start at only $5 total. These vendors ended up saving us lots of money on food.

Me in Rockefeller Center, BlogHer12
Lots more adventures to come...
Our first day in New York was filled with great experiences, as was the remainder of our trip.

So stay tuned for my next posts in my series "Blogging & the City 2.0" where I will tell you about my New York Walking Tour sponsored by StumbleUpon, the "Christmas in July" event sponsored by Hallmark (which will include a GIVEAWAY), the Verizon Luncheon featuring their domestic violence charity - Hopeline, dancing with the Radio City Rockettes sponsored by Pfizer Consumer Healthcare, working out on the new CoreBody Reformer sponsored by Bowflex, attending the Glamorous Moms Luncheon sponsored by Detroit Blogger Shannon Lazovskin and much more...

Disclosure: I was the guest of Aire Ancient Bath House and received complementary bath services. My massage was not complementary. All my trip photos were taken with the Samsung Galaxy S III smartphone loaned to me for trip to BlogHer by Verizon Wireless. All opinions are my own.

Wendy Perrin's 11 Steps to Transform a Cruise Deal into a Dream Trip

Wendy Perrin explains how to turn a ho-hum budget cruise into a custom vacation that you (and your family) will never forget

I love Wendy Perrin.  She is the queen of travel and knows a thing or two about how to get a good deal on anything travel related.

Back in December of 2011, I posted a reprint of one of her articles called My 25 Golden Rules of Travel and I followed some of her advice in the post to score cheap plane tickets to Disney.

My favorite article that she was written is called How to Tweet Your Way to Amazing Deals in which she puts together a Travel Twitter List that everyone should follow to get great travel deals.

Well Wendy is back with a new article in Conde Nast Traveler on how to turn a cheap cruise into a dream cruise.  The following is a reprint of that article.  Make sure you take good notes and bookmark this post to save these tips on how to get the most bang for your buck out of your next budget cruise...

Enjoy!

11 Steps to Transform a Cruise Deal into a Dream Trip
by Wendy Perrin- July 2012 - Conde Nast Travler

Sometimes a “deal” is no deal at all. But sometimes it’s just a few tweaks away from the trip of a lifetime. This is the story of how I turned a low-budget Caribbean cruise—on a crowded megaship with a run-of-the-mill itinerary—into my family’s best vacation in years.

I needed a sunny, affordable getaway for my kids’ February break. So, when an e-mail from Continental Airlines touting, “Escape at Sea from $45/night” popped into my in-box, I clicked. For one low price I could get a floating hotel room, three meals a day, child care, and places to explore.

There was a Western Caribbean sailing that fit my dates, on the cruise line that has my kids’ favorite children’s program, and on a ship with balconied “mini-suites.”

But could I be happy on the Norwegian Star—an older vessel that doesn’t rank among Condé Nast Traveler readers’ top 100 cruise ships? And was I willing to risk booking through a call center like Continental.com Cruises—now renamed United Cruises—even if it promised “EXCLUSIVE prices—often HUNDREDS lower than competitors’ ”?

The quoted $45 per night turned out to be the price per person for the least expensive room on the least expensive cruise. The sailing and the mini-suite I wanted was $117 per person per night—still not bad for an itinerary that hit three countries, a balcony with an ever-changing ocean view, and seven date nights with my husband. I would also get 6,000 United miles and $100 in shipboard credit. I put down a deposit.

Transforming this “deal” into the trip of a lifetime required minimizing the drawbacks of a huge ship (and of booking through a call center) while maximizing the benefits of a vacation at sea. Here’s what I did—and what I learned:

Sign up for alerts, but book through an expert.
Continental.com Cruises’ promise of the best price did not pan out, and the 6,000 miles were hardly worth the bad service and billing mistakes I had to endure to get them. Had I booked through a true cruise expert and advocate—someone like Tom Baker, president of the Cruise Center in Houston—I would have avoided a $25 booking fee, saved $87 on travel insurance, and received an extra $100 in shipboard credit, and my deposit would have been refundable. More cruise experts like Baker can be found in The Top Travel Specialists Collection.

Book far enough ahead to score the right cabin.
On the largest ships, where it can take 15 minutes to walk from bow to stern, cabin location is critical. So is a balcony—a convenient outdoor slice of serenity. Because I had booked five months ahead, I was able to snag a balconied room with a 30-second commute to the kids’ club, the kids’ pool, and the kids’ buffet. A ship is a lot more pleasant when you can take the stairs everywhere and never have to wait for an elevator.

Buy plane tickets yourself rather than through the cruise line.
If you’re booking a cruise many months in advance that departs from a U.S. port, wait to purchase your airline tickets. They typically don’t go on sale until four months before a flight, at the earliest. I saved hundreds of dollars by waiting till two months before the cruise to buy our plane tickets to Tampa, the embarkation port—I had set up airfare alerts on FareCompare.com and Yapta.com, which notified me when fares dropped. Passengers on our cruise—and on most cruises I’ve taken—who bought their airline tickets through the cruise line complained about inconvenient schedules, while I got the nonstops I wanted. To ensure that a canceled flight doesn’t cause you to miss your sailing, fly to your embarkation port early.

Start your cruise relaxed.
Because flying in a day ahead and dealing with the considerable logistics of getting from airport to hotel to ship can leave you frazzled, consider flying in three days ahead, so you can decompress before your cruise starts. Arriving in Tampa three days before our sailing made all the difference to my husband’s and my mental states during the cruise.

Escape the crowds.
The first line a cruisegoer encounters is at check-in. By arriving after lunch, we dodged it and the dreaded embarkation-day buffet line. Rather than waiting for our luggage to be delivered, we packed our swimsuits in our carry-ons so the kids could immediately jump in the pool. On board there was always a restaurant with no line, and there was always free room service.

Turn an ordinary itinerary into a remarkable one.
The only port I could get excited about was the one I’d never been to: Roatán, Honduras. The other three were Belize City, a pit; overbuilt Cozumel; and Costa Maya, Mexico, a tourist complex in the middle of nowhere constructed for cruise passengers. What these places have that’s remarkable, though, is their undersea life. My mission: to get my family underwater to see things they couldn’t experience elsewhere.

Research shore activities in advance.
On a conventional Caribbean cruise, if you wait till you’re in port to plan your day or if you succumb to the group shore excursions that the cruise lines try to sell you, you’ll have a tough time escaping the tourist traps. I got a sense of our options by looking at the excursions described by Norwegian Cruise Line, local tour agencies, and CruiseCritic.com.

Do something you’ve never done before.
We managed to try—and master—a new activity in every port. This was invigorating, made our trip memorable, and left us with a sense of accomplishment. In Roatán we tried snuba, a sport halfway between snorkeling and scuba. In Belize we snorkeled with stingrays and sharks, while in Costa Maya the kids drove golf carts down empty coastal roads. And in Cozumel, Tim, my husband, went scuba diving in a cenote for the first time.

Balance family time, couple time, and alone time.
In each port we did a morning activity as a family—usually one that involved exploring the ocean floor. In the afternoons Tim got a break to scuba dive on his own. Back on board he would take the kids to the pool so I could have alone time, then at night the kids’ club took over so that Tim and I could enjoy civilized dinners and moonlit strolls.

Splurge on an unforgettable trip highlight.
We saved hundreds of dollars by booking activities independently: In Roatán Tim paid $50 for his dive—as opposed to the $119 that the cruise line was charging. In Cozumel snuba for four and a dive for one cost us $234, versus $335 via the cruise line. In Costa Maya our two-hour golf cart rental—which the cruise line didn’t even offer—was $30. Thus, in Belize I felt I had license to splurge so we could explore the world-famous Ambergris Caye reef—Tim diving, the kids and me snorkeling. No company was offering such a shore excursion, and there was no way to get from Belize City to Ambergris Caye and back by boat with the limited shore time. Continental.com Cruises was useless, so I e-mailed Meg Austin of the Travel Society, who specializes in dive trips. She organized one of the best excursions ever: In Belize City we were driven to a private plane for the scenic flight to Ambergris Caye. There we were delivered to our private boat, with a dive master and snorkel guide. First, we went to Shark Ray Alley, then the Hol Chan Marine Reserve. Next, we sailed to the Matachica Resort and Spa, where we ate lunch, luxuriated in hammocks, and fantasized about coming back as overnight guests. The resort’s boat then sped us to our plane, and we were back on board with time to spare. The day cost $1,140 and was worth every penny.

End your trip having mastered a challenge.
Each family member came home with a sense of achievement. Tim dived five times—quite an accomplishment for a family trip—and encountered not only his first cenote but also his first sea horse. My kids turned their underwater photos and stories into a PowerPoint presentation for their classmates. And as for me, I had orchestrated my family’s ultimate vacation.

COUPON: $8 a day parking at Airlines Parking at Detroit Metro Airport ENDS 12/31

$8 a day Parking at Detroit Metro Airport (taxes included)

I just returned yesterday from a 5 day trip to Disney World for the Disney Social Media Moms Conference at the Disney World Yacht Club Beach Resort.  I had a great time and there will be many posts to follow on all my great experiences during the conference.

There is always a level of stress when traveling, but one thing that I did not have to worry about was long term parking because I used this coupon to get $8 a day parking at Airlines Parking near Detroit Metro Airport.

This is the long term parking lot that I always use when I am traveling and I like that this coupon includes all taxes so I know exactly what I will pay per day.

This $8 a day coupon expires December 31, 2012 so keep this page bookmarked for when you want to use long term parking when you travel out of Detroit Metro Airport.

Enjoy!

GIVEAWAY: WIN a $20 Disney Gift Card courtesy of Dawn Travels & Mickey's Dream Vacations ENDS 3/28 (CLOSED)

Disney Travel Agent Dawn Burns with her husband and Mickey
Disney Travel can be made easier (and cheaper) using a Disney Travel Agent...

I have taken my family to Disney World twice and I have been three times to Disney World and once to Disneyland.  I have been lucky in each time I have traveled to Disney either alone or with my family, I have gone as part of a business conference, which made traveling decisions much easier and helped defer lots of trip expenses.

Planning a trip to Disney World, Disneyland or going on a Disney Cruise can be a lot of work and getting a good deal is the only way that most families can afford to go.

For Dawn Burns, being a Disney Travel Agent is the best job in the world...
Local metro Detroit area Disney Travel Agent Dawn Burns is working to make it easier and cheaper for families to take a Disney trip.  A graduate of Eastern Michigan University, Dawn has been married for 23 years to her best friend and the couple have a daughter who is currently an honor student at EMU. Dawn is a self professed "Disney Fanatic" who has been to Disney World 16 times, and loves all things Disney!

"For me, being a Disney Travel Planner is not a job it's a passion" says Dawn. "I decided to become a Disney Travel Planner during an anniversary trip my husband and I took without our daughter. I remember looking around at the Magic Kingdom at all the families who seemed so overwhelmed and unsure what to do. I realized I wanted to share my vast Disney knowledge and help families make the most of their Disney vacations. It's the best job and I love it!"

Since going to Disney can be an expensive trip, I asked Dawn some of the questions that I had about working with a Disney Travel Agent to get the best deal.  Here are her answers...

FIML: Going to Disney World and Disneyland seem to be on everyone's bucket list. Can a family actually save money working with a Disney Travel Agent?

Dawn: As a Disney Travel Planner I feel it is part of my job to make sure each family gets the best value possible. I am constantly watching for new discounts to be released so that I can notify potential clients or have the discount applied to a client's existing reservation. This not only saves my clients money but it also saves them time. They don't have to be "on hold" with Disney for an hour or two to have the discount applied. Another way a Disney Travel Planner can save you money is that he/she knows which seasons are peak vs value which can affect what you pay for your hotel room and for your dining.

FIML: How are Disney Travel Agents paid?

Dawn: Disney Travel Agents are paid a commission by Disney. Using a travel agent does not cost the client anything extra but it does provide extra perks. As a Disney Travel Planner I offer concierge level service at no additional cost. I make all dining reservations, tour reservations and anything else a family might need such as a stroller or an ecv. I also like to send each family a small thank you gift to let them know how much I appreciate their business.

FIML: Should I work with a Disney Travel Agent in my hometown or does it matter where the agent is located?

Dawn: As long as you are working with a knowledgeable Disney Travel Planner I don't think it matters where they are located. The Internet and cell phones make it very easy to work with people from all over. I am located in Michigan but I work with clients from across the country. The key is that the Travel Planner knows Disney, just because someone is a travel agent it doesn't mean they are informed and experienced serving all destinations. Disney World and Disneyland have so much to offer that you want to use someone who knows their stuff and will share that information with you and your family.

FIML: I hate trying to figure out the cheapest airfare when traveling. Can a Disney agent help with the scheduling of all aspects of a Disney trip including the airfare?

Dawn: When booking airfare for your Disney vacation it can be included as part of your package or booked separately. My own feeling is that I am more than happy to assist my clients with booking their flights or letting them take care of that if that is their preference. I want whatever makes it easiest for you! People may not know that Disney provides complimentary bus service to and from the Orlando airport to all guests staying at Disney resorts. This is a wonderful money saver and it means the fun starts as soon as you land in Orlando! Your family will be greeted by Disney cast members wearing Mickey gloves and then you'll be escorted down the "red carpet" where you'll wait for the luxury motorcoach that will whisk you to your resort. To keep the kids entertained a movie will play during your short ride to your hotel!

FIML: What are your biggest money saving tips for people who will be visiting Disney this year?

Dawn: My biggest money saving tip is to take advantage of Disney World's "free dining". We all love getting things for free and free dining is an amazing value. The travel dates for this offer are August 25-September 29, 2012. Guests staying at a Disney World "Moderate" or "Deluxe" hotel get the basic dining plan for free. This plan gives you a Table Service Meal, a Counter Service Meal, and a snack per person per night of your stay. The meals even include your non-alcoholic beverage and dessert! Guests who book a stay at a Disney "Value" resort get the "Quick Service" dining plan for free. That plan gives you 2 counter service meals and 1 snack per night booked. Both plans include a refillable mug that will come in handy with the Florida heat! This offer must be booked by May 18th but anyone interested in this terrific offer should move quickly as there is limited availability and rooms fill quickly.

National jazz star, Alexander Zonjic, and friends, will perform a FREE Valentine’s Concert for the public in the beautiful Ravitz Foundation Main Atrium of Henry Ford West Bloomfield Hospital at 2 p.m. Sunday, February 12.

The concert is part of the Hospital’s Healing Arts Program.

The festive FREE concert will present an entertaining blend of jazz, blues and gospel music featuring the vocal group, Men of Grace and the vocal stylings of soloist Athena Jackson along with Zonjic and his award winning band.

Flutist Alexander Zonjic is a jazz favorite across the country for his cool jazz grooves and exciting shows. He has shared the stage with such greats as Earl Klugh, Kirk Whalum and Angela Bofill. He currently hosts a syndicated radio show called Alexander Zonjic from A to Z that airs on Canadian radio and WVMV’s HD2 Channel. He won the 2010 Album of the Year and Broadcaster of the Year at the Canadian Smooth Jazz Awards. In addition to performing in one hundred concerts a year, he is the artistic director for numerous music festivals.

The unique Men of Grace group performs everything from blues to jazz to gospel with emphasis on vocal harmony. Its repertoire includes standards and original music with arrangements influenced by many musical genres. The award winning eight member group consists of men who are currently in or have completed the one year rehabilitation program of Grace Centers of Hope. It was formed in 1999 as a musical ministry of Grace Gospel Fellowship in Pontiac, Michigan. Since then, The Men of Grace has recorded seven CDs and has toured the country performing for U.S. Presidents, Fortune 500 companies, professional sports teams, churches and synagogues of every size and denomination and nearly every Cracker Barrel east of the Mississippi.

Athena Johnson is a talented song stylist who adds warmth and her special interpretations to old standards and the latest contemporary jazz arrangements.

Henry Ford West Bloomfield Hospital is a destination offering activities and programs to enhance the quality of life - in addition to the clinical excellence for which Henry Ford is known. Visitors discover a health care experience unlike any other, offering the latest in medicine, technology and patient safety, integrated with wellness and prevention programs, all under one roof.  Click here to see my tour of the hospital back in 2010.

Henry Ford West Bloomfield Hospital is a dedicated to its core mission to serve as a community center for well being, “Given the vision and mission of this beautiful new institution, “said Zonjic, “we felt the idea of holding a top notch musical concert as a gift for the community, was a perfect fit. There is no question that enjoying music can be a powerful tool for creating better health and well being.”

FREE parking is available at the Henry Ford West Bloomfield Hospital and The Atrium is easily accessible.
