JANUARY 1— NO PROGRAM—NEW YEARS DAY

JANUARY 8— LOST CITY OF Z (2017) - At the dawn of the 20th century, British explorer Percy Fawcett journeys into the Amazon, where he discovers evidence of a previously unknown, advanced civilization that may have once inhabited the region. Despite being ridiculed by the scientific establishment, which views indigenous populations as savages, the determined Fawcett, supported by his devoted wife, son, and aide-decamp, returns to his beloved jungle in an attempt to prove his case. A true-life drama, centering on British explorer Col. Percival Fawcett, who disappeared while searching for a mysterious city in the Amazon in the 1920s. (Rated PG-13. 141 min.)

JANUARY 15— NO PROGRAM—MARTIN LUTHER KING DAY

JANUARY 22— DETROIT (2017) - In the summer of 1967, rioting and civil unrest starts to tear apart the city of Detroit. Two days later, a report of gunshots prompts the Detroit Police Department, the Michigan State Police and the Michigan Army National Guard to search and seize an annex of the nearby Algiers Motel. Several policemen start to flout procedure by forcefully and viciously interrogating guests to get a confession. By the end of the night, three unarmed men are gunned down while several others are brutally beaten. (Rated R. 143 min.)

JANUARY 29— POLLOCK (2000) - Artist Jackson Pollock revolutionized American painting in the 1940's with his exciting abstract canvases that used dripped and splattered paint in a manner at once excitingly physical and structurally intelligent. While Pollock became a heroic figure in the art world, his private life was nothing to envy, and this biography looks at both his professional triumphs and personal tragedies. Pollock was the first feature directed by actor Ed Harris, who also plays the title role; the cast also includes Val Kilmer, Marcia Gay Harden, Amy Madigan and Jennifer Connelly. (Rated R. 122 min.)

FEBRUARY 5— BLACK SWAN (2010) - Nominated for an Academy Award, Natalie Portman is Nina, a stunningly talented but dangerously unstable ballerina on the verge of stardom. Pushed to the breaking point by her driven artistic director (Vincent Cassel) and the threat posed by a seductive rival dancer (Mila Kunis), Nina’s tenuous grip on reality starts to slip away–plunging her into a waking nightmare. (Rated R. 108 min.)

FEBRUARY 12— LADY MACBETH (2016) - Rural England, 1865, Katherine (Florence Pugh) is stifled by her loveless marriage to a bitter man twice her age, whose family is cold and unforgiving. When she embarks on a passionate affair with a young worker on her husband’s estate, a force is unleashed inside her, so powerful that she will stop at nothing to get what she wants. (Rated R. 89 min.)

FEBRUARY 19— NO PROGRAM—PRESIDENT’S DAY

FEBRUARY 26— BIRTH OF A NATION (2016) - Set against the antebellum South, The Birth of a Nation follows Nat Turner (Nate Parker), a literate slave and preacher, whose financially stained owner, Samuel Turner (Armie Hammer), accepts an offer to use Nat’s preaching to subdue slaves. As he witnesses countless atrocities, against himself and his fellow slaves, Nat orchestrates an uprising in the hopes of leading his people to freedom. (Rated R. 120 min.)

MARCH 5—THE CIRCLE (2017) - When Mae (Emma Watson) is hired to work for the world’s largest and most powerful tech and social media company, she sees it as an opportunity of a lifetime. As she rises through the ranks, she is encouraged by the company’s founder, Eamon Bailey (Tom Hanks) to engage in a groundbreaking experiment that pushes the boundaries of privacy, ethics, and ultimately, her personal freedom. Her participation in the experiment and every decision she makes begin to affect the lives and future of her friends, family and all of humanity. (Rated PG-13. 110 min.)

MARCH 12— 13 MINUTES (2017) - During Hitler's anniversary speech on November 8, 1939, a man is arrested on the Swiss border for possession of suspicious objects. Just minutes later, a bomb explodes in the Munich Bürgerbräukeller, immediately behind the Führer's lectern, killing eight people. The man is Georg Elser (Christian Friedel), a carpenter from Königsbronn in the Swabia region. Suspected of the crime Elser is sent to the head of the Gestapo, Heinrich Müller (Johann von Bülow) to be questioned. During his confinement, he recalls the events leading up to his plot and his reasons for deciding to take such drastic action. German language with English Subtitles. (Rated R. 114 min.)

MARCH 19— MEGAN LEAVEY (2017) - The true life story of Megan Leavey (Kate Mara), a young Marine corporal whose unique discipline and bond with a military combat dog saved many lives during her deployment in Iraq. Assigned to clean up the K-9 unit after a disciplinary hearing, Leavey starts to identify with Rex, a particularly aggressive dog that she trains. Over the course of their service, Megan and Rex complete more than 100 missions until an improvised explosive device injures both, putting their fates in jeopardy.(Rated PG-13. 116 min.)

MARCH 26— WONDER WOMAN (2017) - Before she was Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot), she was Diana, princess of the Amazons, raised on a sheltered island paradise and trained to be an unconquerable warrior. When an American pilot crashes on their shores and tells of a massive conflict raging in the outside world, Diana leaves her home, convinced she can stop the threat. Fighting alongside man in a war to end all wars, Diana will discover her full powers…and her true destiny. (Rated PG-13. 141 min.)

Get 50% off at The Salvation Army Thrift Stores for their New Year's Day Sale - 1/1/2018

Donations of gently-used clothing, home goods accepted for 2017 tax deductions, 50 percent off clothing sale to take over 37 metro Detroit family stores, January 1st

The New Year is almost here, and The Salvation Army Adult Rehabilitation Center (ARC) will open an additional day to accept charitable donations to stock the shelves of its 37 metro Detroit thrift stores. All stores will open 11 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 31 to collect gently used items.

All donations to The Salvation Army are tax deductible. Donate any day before Jan. 1, 2018 to receive a tax receipt that can be applied towards 2017 taxes.

“Historically our thrift stores and donation centers are closed on Sunday, but with New Year’s Eve falling on a Sunday this year, we decided to keep our donation centers open for last minute contributions,” said Rani Gabbara, director of retail operations for The Salvation Army ARC. “The holiday is always a big donation day for us, and we recognize the need to make drop-offs easy and convenient for our supporters.”

Donations of gently used clothing, linens, household appliances, furniture, toys, shoes, purses and house wares are accepted at all Salvation Army thrift store donation centers. For specific hours of your local Salvation Army thrift store donation center, visit semichigan.satruck.org.

To help speed up individual wait-time during the year-end donation rush, management encourages donors to:
· Package gently-used items by type. For example, pack clothing items in a separate bag from housewares.
· Prepare an itemized list of donations in advance, and group the items in your list by type.
· Bring a pen to fill out your tax receipt.
· Try arriving to a donation center in the morning to avoid long lines.

Salvation Army thrift store shoppers will also have a chance to usher in the New Year with great deals or a new wardrobe during The Salvation Army’s annual New Year’s Day sale.

Visit any of the 37 metro Detroit Salvation Army thrift store locations to enjoy 50 percent off clothing, as well as hourly spot sales across several departments, on Monday, Jan 1. Doors will be open at the nonprofit’s 37 thrift stores from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.

“What’s truly wonderful about donating and shopping at The Salvation Army thrift stores is that all proceeds benefit our 180-day, residential rehabilitation program designed to help men and women struggling with substance abuse overcome their self-defeating habits,” said Envoy Jacqulynn Idzior, The Salvation Army ARC assistant administrator. “It’s important for the community to know even a small donation or shopping spree is helping save lives.”
