GIVEAWAY: ENTER to WIN a $25 Amazon Gift Card to celebrate the new Clinton Township @DFCU_Financial - ENDS 2/8 (CLOSED)

Special thanks to DFCU Financial for sponsoring this post and giveaway. All opinions are my own...

You could win big during the Grand Opening Week for the new Clinton Township DFCU Financial branch, 2/1 - 2/6...

Over 30 years ago,  I became a member of my first credit union.  I did not know much about credit unions back then until I needed a car loan and I found that the credit union associated with my job at the time had the best car loan rates.

Even after a change of jobs, I realized being a member of a credit union was one of the best ways to save money in the long term. So I became a member of the Dearborn Federal Credit Union (DFCU) over 10 years ago and have been loving it ever since.

Being a member of DFCU Financial gets you great benefits which include -

- Access to nearly 30,000 fee-free ATMs nationwide.

- A truly free account with overdraft protection, no minimum balance or monthly maintenance fees and a 0.25% loan rate reduction on select loans with automatic payments.

- Online and mobile banking that allows you to transfer funds, pay your bills online and get text message and email alerts if your balance is low, all for free.

- DFCU’s $50 Cash Back Program, which pays members a loyalty reward of 0.50% on their average yearly loan and deposit balances from the prior year. Each qualified member receives a minimum of $50, even kids’ accounts!

- Speaking of kids accounts, DFCU not only offers saving accounts for kids and teens, but also DFCU's Wise Kids Club, which teaches kids up to age 12 the basics of saving, spending and sharing in fun ways.

Click on the graphic to read the DCFU Financial Member benefits...
Participate in the DFCU Challenge and you could WIN INSTANTLY!

Today thru Saturday, February 6th, anyone can go into the new Clinton Township DFCU Financial branch, ask a teller why DFCU is better than a bank and then ask for a game piece, and you could be an instant winner.

There is $6,000 being given away!

If you are not an instant winner, your game piece will go into the pot for a drawing on Saturday, February 6th if there is still prize money to be given away.

Also on Saturday February 6th, the Cappuccino Man, the mobile gourmet coffee caterer, will be at the Clinton Township DFCU branch giving away FREE beverages from 10:00am - 2:00pm.

What to buy to Survive a Weather Disaster by Sandy Storm Survior Louis Scatigna

Do you have a generator?  Photo Credit: Flickr Creative Commons
No. 1 Best Investment is a Generator, says guest blogger Louis Scatigna...

I live in Jackson, N.J., about 10 miles inland, and did not get the devastating storm surge from Hurricane Sandy. And yet, I have never experienced such a catastrophic weather event. High winds brought down thousands of trees, taking out power lines and crashing into homes. The destruction here is something I never imagined I would see.

The Mantoloking Bridge, where the sea came into the bay, is where I crab all summer. It's now crumpled in the water, surrounded by flooded homes. It’s heartbreaking to see images of the place you love destroyed.

Since most homes did not have power or internet immediately after the storm, we did not get to see the images of ravaged iconic Jersey Shore towns like Seaside Heights, Point Pleasant, Manasquan, Mantoloking, Atlantic City and Asbury Park. Local residents are shocked at the extent of the devastation revealed in newspaper photos. Entire shore towns are gone; there is nothing left.

People are starting to lose it by the day; they’ve never gone so long without power. People in New York are eating from Dumpsters. The lines for gas, if you can find it, are miles long. A few more days like this and I worry civilization will start to break down.

Thankfully, my family is OK. I'm nutty about preparation, so we have everything we need. It is so important to be prepared for disaster.

Do you own a generator?
Since I had a generator and plenty of fuel, the loss of power was tolerable. I was able to run my refrigerator and freezer, charge my cell phone and iPad, light my house and watch DVDs on the flat screen. The biggest complaint from those without generators has been boredom.

My 4G iPad was a lifesaver. I was able to tune into local radio stations and keep up with the news; view pictures and videos of the devastation; and play games to pass the time.

You will need lots of water...
Water is worth its weight in gold during a crisis, you can never have too much. Canned food, candles, flashlights and batteries are other must-have prep items.

Fill up that gas tank before the storm hits...
It is very difficult to get gasoline as many stations have no power or have not had any gas delivered. There are mile-long lines at the stations that do have power and gas. The traffic around them is incredible -- it’s a wild scene!

Why did so many people have so little gas that they would line up for hours to fill their tank? Because they did not prepare for the major disaster that had been forecast for the greater part of a week. My three cars are all full because I filled up BEFORE the storm.

The Jersey Shore will come back, but it will take a very long time. I feel a profound sadness seeing the beautiful shore destroyed and witnessing the suffering of those who have lost everything.

Please use this tragedy to prepare your family for disaster natural or man made. The best investment you can make is a generator. Buy one BEFORE a crisis hits.

FREE $25 credit for opening a Serve® by American Express Prepaid Card - ENDS 1/17

The Serve by American Express Prepaid Card is worth checking out...especially when is comes with FREE money

Back on September 29th, I was reading one of my favorite bloggers, Zippy from ChampagneLiving, and found a way to make an easy $25. She had just posted that American Express and Verizon Wireless have teamed up for a new Prepaid Card called "Serve" and they are giving everyone that signed up by September 30th a $25 promotional credit.

I signed up and I received my $25 credit immediately
To get the $25 credit, you have to open an account and tie it to your Bank Account, Credit or Debit Card and then transfer $25. I decided to try it out and it worked. I thought I would have to wait 30 days for the $25 credit to be added to my account, but I got it immediately as you can see the photo above.  When my new Serve Card came in the mail, I went straight to the gas station to put $50 worth of gas in the tank of my car. That extra $25 really came in handy.

Another Opportunity for a $25 Credit
I figured that American Express would offer the $25 Signup Credit again and I was right. Everyone can receive a $25 account credit when you sign up for a new Serve® account and make a one-time load of $25 or more through January 17, 2013.

Serve Card comes with some nice Benefits
The Serve Card also comes with some nice benefits for the cardholder, the best of which I think is FREE Roadside Assistance. This benefit includes FREE towing, winching, jump starts, flat tire change when spare is available, lockout service when key is in vehicle and delivery of up to two gallons of fuel. These services are available regardless of mileage from primary residence when traveling within the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico. So if you are not already paying for roadside assistance, getting it for FREE on the Serve Card is a nice perk.

WHAT'S THE CATCH?
We know that no one gives away free money without a catch. I read all the fine print and discovered American Express is only waiving fees on the Serve Card until March of 2013, then you will be charged a fee to load money on the card, much like all the rest of the prepaid cards that you can buy at places like the checkout line at Target or Walmart. Fees are really the only way companies can make money on prepaid cards.

So if you signup, make sure you spend your $50 before then and if you are not loving the card, close your account.

Click here to read more about the Serve $25 Credit offer from Serve by American Express that ends on 1/17

UPDATE: October 15th, 2012 >>>> I just received an email from Serve with yet some more FREE. Check out the image below... I am so not going to let $10 more FREE dollars pass me by...

UPDATE: 10/25/2012 ->>>> I received my $10 credit today - Thanks to Serve
