GIVE BACK: Don Bosco Hall and The Shirt Box partner to help Metro Detroit Jobseekers

Help The Shirt Box and Don Bosco Hall give male job seekers an added boost of confidence...

The Shirt Box of Farmington Hills and Detroit-based Don Bosco Hall has partnered to help outfit hundreds of men across metro Detroit as they return to the workforce.

Donors are encouraged to bring gently worn men’s professional clothing – dress shirts, slacks, ties, sport coats, etc. – to The Shirt Box at 32500 Northwestern Highway in Farmington Hills. Donations will be given to Don Bosco Hall.

In recognition of the tough economic times locally and nationally, Don Bosco Hall launched a free clothing store last year within its Community Resource Center. Serving out-of work, underemployed and homeless individuals, the store is managed by youth within Don Bosco Hall’s Male Leadership Academy. The young people in the program are learning the importance of community service by working in the clothing store. Clothes articles are donated and anyone in need can receive services at no cost.

“There is no doubt that the need in the Detroit region is still great,” said Charles Small, President and CEO of Don Bosco Hall. “We appreciate community partners like The Shirt Box. Every community partner that steps forward makes a difference.”

Please note: While The Shirt Box will serve as a donation drop-off point, all garments will be distributed through Don Bosco Hall’s facilities only.

Don Bosco Hall works to strengthen families, offering an opportunity hub where youth and families can be exposed to a wide variety of educational, recreation, and cultural arts and skill development activities. More information about the organization can be found by visiting DonBoscoHall.org.

“We truly believe that good clothing helps give job seekers an added boost of confidence. The Shirt Box in Farmington Hills will put “BOTTLE” in “BOTTLE”NECK on September 11th for drivers sitting in construction on Northwestern Highway...

As the interchange at Northwestern Highway, 14 Mile and Orchard Lake roads undergoes a substantial makeover, drivers are sitting, backed-up for miles during rush hour.

Ron Elkus and Rod Brown, co-owners of the men’s haberdashery The Shirt Box, has decided to do something to help put drivers at ease. The men purchased cases of bottled water and are passing out the bottles to drivers stopped in front of its shop. They were inspired by the “random act of kindness” philosophy.

The Shirt Box will be out in full force on Thursday, September 11, 2014 passing out FREE bottled water to thirsty drivers between 4:30-6 p.m.  So be on the look out if you are in the area.

I have worked around the corner from Einstein Bros. Bagels for years and yet for some reason I had never made it inside.  I knew that the interiors in the Michigan stores had been recently renovated to give them a modern look and that they had new menu items introduced just this summer, but I had never made the time to check out all the changes since I was usually running late for some work meeting as I was driving by.

So when I was offered a complimentary gift card to try out the new menu (thanks Einstein Bros.) I gladly accepted and decided to extend my daily lunchtime fitness routine to power walk around the corner and over to Einstein Bros. Bagels.

I decided to try out the new Einstein Bros. Bagel Dog combo which features an all-beef, 1/4lb, Hebrew National® hot dog wrapped up inside a fresh baked plain or Asiago cheese bagel bun (I choose the plain) along with potato salad (other choices are available) and a fountain drink.

As hot dogs go, the Einstein Bros. Bagel Dog was excellent.  I love all-beef hot dogs and the bagel bun was yummy, filling and a totally modern take on a traditional hot dog bun.  I also loved the potato salad which complemented the hot dog perfectly for a great summertime meal.  I was so full after eating (burp!) that all I wanted to do was close my eyes and rest - not that I did since I was still at work :)

Buddy's Pizza celebrates 68 years with FREE Customer Appreciation Discount Cards starting 6/23

Buddy’s Pizza turns 68, announces 11th location in Novi and Customer Appreciation Discount Cards...

This year, Buddy’s Pizza will celebrate 68 years of serving up Detroit’s original square Sicilian-style pizza, by bringing its Motor City classic to even more families and pizza fans. The restaurant that established Buddy’s Pizza Day in Detroit on June 23 has officially announced a brand new location is coming to Novi.

An 11th Buddy’s Pizza restaurant will open at Fountain Walk in Novi early this fall. Located on the north end of Twelve Mile Crossing in Fountain Walk, the newest addition to the Buddy’s family will be its largest location to date. The full-service restaurant will include indoor and outdoor seating for more than 200 people and provide ample parking as well as easy accessibility for guests, as it is situated near freeways M-5, I-275, I-696 and I-96.

“With the addition of our new Novi location, we’ll expand Buddy’s Pizza into Northwestern Wayne and Southwestern Oakland counties, making Detroit’s original square pizza more accessible to the fans that’ve made the brand a favorite across the region and the country,” said Robert Jacobs, Buddy’s Pizza president.

Designed by Northville-based Martone Design Studio, the new Novi location will feature an urban, retro-styled interior and exterior, including a main lobby, outdoor dining area, main bar, dining room, banquet room, carry out room, modern restrooms and kitchen.

The 8,000 square feet restaurant will carry on Buddy’s Pizza’s legacy with strong undertones of automotive design and Detroit’s industrial history. The grand opening for Buddy’s Pizza in Novi is pending early fall.

Buddy’s Pizza staff and management have long made it a tradition to recognize those have contributed to the restaurants’ success over the decades across metro Detroit, the guests they consider family.

Beginning Buddy’s Pizza Day on Monday, June 23, all Buddy’s Pizza locations will offer 2014 customer appreciation cards.

Once per month through the end of the year, cardholders will be able to purchase an 8-square cheese pizza for $6.80 and add extra toppings for 68 cents each – a nod to the restaurant’s 68 years of business in Detroit. 

Appreciation cards will be available at all 10 Buddy’s Pizza locations through June 30, or while supplies last. No purchase is necessary.

On Monday, June 24, 2013, each Buddy's restaurant will celebrate Buddy’s Pizza Day and Buddy’s 67 years of business in Detroit, by offering customers appreciation cards.

Once a month through the end of the 2013, cardholders can purchase an 8-square cheese pizza for $6.70 and add extra toppings for 67 cents each.

Customer Appreciation cards will be available June 24th through June 29th, or while supplies last at each Buddy's Restaurant location.

Sixty-seven years after Buddy’s Pizza originated the Sicilian-style square on the corner of Conant and Six Mile, the family-owned restaurants are serving up something new - in skinnier boxes. Nearly seven decades since the Motor City favorite got its start, Buddy’s Pizza has added brand new options to its menu that are sure to have tastebuds talking.

From gluten-free and multigrain crusts to vegan and antioxidant options, offering a variety of choices without sacrificing the famed Buddy’s flavor is nothing new to this Detroit institution. That’s never been more apparent than it is this month, as Buddy’s Pizza introduces Buddy’s Detroit’s Original Square Sicilian Style Thin Crust Pizza.

CHARITY: The Shirt Box launches “Shirts Off Our Backs: From Our Closet to Yours” Clothing Drive - Farmington Hills

The Shirt Box aims to collect 500 articles of men’s gently used clothing before the holiday season to help unemployed

The Shirt Box today announced the beginning of their “Shirts Off Our Backs: From Our Closet to Yours” clothing drive with a record-breaking collection goal of 500 items by November 1, to honor their five-year partnership with the Neighborhood Service Organization (NSO).

Since its inception in 2007, co-owners Ron Elkus and Rod Brown of the Farmington Hills store have partnered with NSO of Detroit to collect and donate thousands of gently used articles of men’s clothing and shoes in an effort to assist unemployed metro-Detroit men prepare for future interviews.

“We take pride in the generosity of our customers who work with us to provide the men of metro-Detroit clothing that makes them feel prepared and confident in their job search,” said Ron Elkus, co-owner of The Shirt Box. “It is our goal to supply men in need with the appropriate clothing that can bring about success in the workplace, or helpthem land a new job.”

With donations from The Shirt Box, NSO created and maintains Joe’s Closet, a shop that provides FREE clothing and accessories to men in need, who are often seeking business attire for job interviews, or recently employed but unable to afford the proper attire. In addition to NSO’s consumers, hundreds of men each year benefit from the clothing drive through non-profit organizations such as The Jewish Vocational Services, Freedom House and New Day have also benefited from the drive.

Individuals are encouraged to bring in gently used, clean garments to The Shirt Box during business hours, Monday-Saturday 9:30 a.m. – 6:00 p.m., Thursday 9:30 – 7:00 p.m. Acceptable garments include dress shirts, slacks, ties and sports coats, to help the nonprofits’ clients fill their own closets for the upcoming holiday season.

Individuals in need of gently used clothing should contact the Neighborhood Service Organization at 313-961-4890.
