FREE Concert celebrating African Americans in Performing Arts - Detroit Main Library - 2/17

72nd Annual Hackley Concert featuring Sterling Glenn Sangoma...

The Detroit Public Library Proudly Presents The 72nd Annual E. Azalia Hackley Collection Concert where musical director Sterling Glenn Sangoma will take the audience on a fascinating musical journey across the Black Diaspora.

This concert will highlight classical selections by black composers from Egypt, Cuba, Jamaica and the U.S.

Concert is free and open to the public

Sterling Glenn Sangoma, a native Detroiter, has attended Cass Technical High School, Wayne State and Oakland Universities. He did his graduate studies in ethnomusicology at the Institute of African Studies at the University of Ghana, West Africa. While living in New Orleans, he was on the local Arts Council and served as an artist-in-residence for the State Board of Education of Louisiana while hosting a regular educational TV program.

Mr. Sangoma has been the musical director for several modern dance companies. He has been a staff musician at Dance Magazine’s National Choreography Conferences and has toured as a musician for Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater.

An Evening with Sterling Glenn Sangoma will take the audience on a fascinating musical journey across the Black Diaspora. He will be performing on piano as well as flute with poetry. The concert will highlight classical selections by black composers from Egypt, Cuba, Jamaica and the U.S. The evening will include jazz, spirituals, gospel, African Highlife, Calypso and the Brazilian samba. Mr. Sangoma will be accompanied by Marion Hayden on string bass and Theo Chillis on percussion.
