MOVIE REVIEW: Life as We Know It

Guest blogger Liz Parker is back from seeing an advance screening of "Life As We Know It" with an all star cast including Katherine Heigl and Josh Duhamel.

Is life good for bad in this movie? Let's see what Liz thinks...

"Life As We Know It" is yet another fluffy/so-so movie that puts most of its funny moments in the trailer. I was hoping that this would be a funny film, since I like both of the main stars in it (Katherine Heigl and Josh Duhamel), but it ended up being another case of a comedy that looks funny in its trailer, but turns out to be only mediocre in its entirety.

Holly (Katherine Heigl, "Killers") and Eric (Josh Duhamel, "When in Rome") don't particularly like each other, but they try to get along since they are the godparents to Sophie, daughter of their best friends Alison (Christina Hendricks, TV's "Mad Men") and Peter (Hayes MacArthur, "She's Out of My League"). When a tragic car accident leaves Sophie orphaned, they soon find out that Alison and Peter wished them to have custody of Sophie - together. Although they dislike each other, they try living together for Sophie's sake, and they soon find out that maybe they originally judged each other too quickly after all.

Maybe see this movie. The movie's premise was interesting but I was bored throughout most of it. Despite including such A-listers such as Heigl and Duhamel, and Josh Lucas ("Daydream Nation") in a supporting role as Heigl's boyfriend, the film was far too predictable, and it was a rom-com that I barely remembered the next day. Sophie (the baby) is adorable, and the house that Heigl and Duhamel move in to (Alison and Peter's house, which I found to be a bit weird) is gigantic and beautiful, but a comedy actually needs to be funny in order for it to work, and I found "Life As We Know It" to be quite lacking in terms of laughs throughout most of it. If you're looking for an enjoyable but easily forgettable movie, then this might be your type of film; however, with all the great movies out there right now (The Town, The Social Network, and Easy A, just to name a few), I would recommend choosing something else to see.

"Life As We Know It" opens in theaters on October 8th.

"Taking Time for Me" Series: Women Do Too Much!

Ladies! Take some Time for Yourselves.       P-L-E-A-S-E
Why are women working so hard? Why does our day start before anyone else's and end way after everyone has gone to bed? Blogger and certified massage therapist Carrie Burgan knows from running her massage business that woman are putting themselves last on the care list.

This is the last of 3 sponsored guest posts in the series "Taking Time for Me" where Carrie shares tips on loving our bodies.  So ladies, put down that iPhone and Blackberry and discover how to stop working so hard and to take time for yourself...

Women do too much. Wait, did I just make an understatement?
Women are focused on their children, their spouses, their jobs, their household, their aging parents, their friends and their after-work commitments. It’s fair to say that women are challenged to find balance between these responsibilities and somehow eek out a few minutes of precious time for themselves. If you’re like me, you’re saying, “Time for myself? What?”

It’s true that there are still only 24 hours in a day. Despite the challenges to taking time to rest and recuperate, it can be done. In fact, it’s vital to your health and well-being to take time for you! The American Heart Association says, “More and more evidence suggests a relationship between the risk of cardiovascular disease and environmental and psychosocial factors.”¹ Negative stressors from overloaded schedules keep our body on “high alert” and does not allow the body to enter a “rest and repose” mode, which allows for our bodies to heal and our energy stores to restore.²

With an ounce of foresight you too can gain a satisfying chunk of “me time” that will leave you refreshed and ready to conquer another day. Here are some ways to carve out a few precious minutes of time:

Schedule “daddy day” with the kids. How long has it been since your kids had an entire “date day” with their dad (or grandma or aunt or other relative)? In 2010 our kids and other family members are also overscheduled and could use some old-fashioned “quality time” with each other. This will leave you with a few, glorious hours of time to yourself. If dad gets protective of his “me time,” let him know you’d love to reciprocate next weekend. Sometimes give and take goes a long way!

Book a massage. Have you had a one-hour vacation lately? If you have the time, you can schedule a massage or other spa services to indulge in delicious “me time”… and be happier and healthier for it! Long-known as a way to indulge and relax, massage therapy can also help you therapeutically to work on imbalances in your muscles. Patterns of wear from repetitive motions, like working at a computer or carrying a child on a hip, can cause imbalances, which massage therapy can help. Many massage therapists will also integrate bonuses like aromatherapy or hot stones into their services. If you can’t drive to a spa or office but you can make time and space at home, many therapists will make house calls so you never have to leave the comfort of your home!

Call your friends. If a book club sounds like too much work, you don’t have the cash for shop-at-home parties and going to the bar isn’t your thing, call a friend or two and host a mini-potluck with wine or cocktails at home. It doesn’t take much time or money to crash someone else’s pad for a couple of hours for good, old-fashioned girl-talk, food, and perhaps a movie. If more than one person has children, consider hiring a local sitter to watch them in a basement or another room so that the ladies can just relax and unwind.

Take a personal day. No, don’t lie and call in sick, but remember that your vacation time is meant to be taken! When people don’t take vacation time they don’t have enough time to decompress and refocus. Not taking paid time off can also lead to presenteeism, or coming to work even when you should be home. This can lead to poor productivity and set you into a funk. If you have personal days, vacation days, or “paid time off,” take it! Schedule a half-day when the family will be away in order to book some me-time. If you don’t have paid time off or you work from home or are a stay-at-home mom, ask a friend to watch your children for three or four hours and then offer to reciprocate next week.

Hire helpers. The most beautiful chores are the ones you don’t have to do yourself! Each spring, my husband and I gift ourselves a “spring cleanup.” By hiring a local high school student to clean out the gutters, rake leaves, and do general spring clean-up, we saves two or three hours of work for us and the student does a fantastic job while earning extra money. If you don’t trust your neighborhood kids to get the job done, there are a lot of fabulous local, small business owners who are aching for the chance to serve you. (And you may save money by doing business locally… Small business owners can usually beat large company prices!) You gain several hours of “you” time and you support the local economy.

This is the last post of the series "Taking Time for Me" and I hope everyone enjoyed it.  Please visit Carrie at the links below to continue this healthy conversation.  A link to this 3 part series has been added to the Best of FREEISMYLIFE page under the Health and Fitness section.

HELP Domestic Violence Victims 2 become Survivors through SAFE and HopeLine® in October

1 Old Cell Phone +
1 Financial Seminar on 10/23 =
2 FREE ways to Help Domestic Violence Survivors

In September I wrote a blog post concerning the growing threat of domestic violence in metro Detroit due to the downturn in the economy.  The statistics that were given in that post were disturbing:

- Domestic abuse is 3 times more likely to occur when a family is under financial stress

- Domestic abuse is 3 times more likely to occur if a partner has been unemployed 2 or more times

- Every 9 seconds a woman is abused or beaten by her partner

The good news is that you can help domestic violence victims during the month of October without spending any money.  Here's how...

1.  Donate Your Old Cell Phone to the Verizon HopeLine® Program

Now I know that everyone has at least one old cell phone just laying around the house.  Now imagine that dusty old cell phone being turned into a brand new phone with free airtime to help a domestic violence victim.  Sounds good right?

Verizon Wireless’ long-running HopeLine® program collects no-longer-used wireless phones and equipment in any condition from any service provider. The used phones are either refurbished or recycled. With the funds raised from the sale of the refurbished phones, Verizon Wireless donates wireless phones and airtime to survivors, and provides funding and other contributions to non-profit domestic violence shelters and prevention programs across the country.

All you have to do is take your old cell phone to the nearest store that accepts donations for the Hopeline program.  There are tons of Hopeline donation locations in the Detroit area at Verizon Communication Stores.  If there is no location near you, you can donate your cell phone to Hopeline by mail with FREE shipping.

2. Come out to the FREE Sisters Acquiring Financial Empowerment (SAFE) Health & Wealth Expo on 10/23

Sisters Acquiring Financial Empowerment (S.A.F.E.) helps domestic violence survivors in metro Detroit gain the skills to earn a decent living and regain their lives by providing help with career mapping, resume writing, interviewing, employment rights, financial literacy, and entrepreneur skills.

On Saturday, October 23, 2010, S.A.F.E. will hold a FREE Health & Wealth Expo at the Northwest Activities Center at 18100 Meyers Road in Detroit. There will be FREE information and resources on healthy living on a budget, stress reduction, job seeking tips and personal finance. This event includes lunch, giveaways, and sample packs from various vendors. The event is totally FREE and open to the public.

S.A.F.E. is looking for individuals willing to volunteer to help with the seminar.  They are also looking for corporations that can provide grants and sponsorships to further help domestic violence survivors.  If you can help, go to http://www.safehealthwealth.com/  for more information.

It is amazing that through old cell phones and financial empowerment seminars, domestic violence victims can become domestic violence survivors.  Just a few small efforts on your part can make all the difference...

Motown Love: Ron Banks and The Dramatics

Click here if video is not shown

Another Installment in the Weekly Motown Love Series

Memories are FREE!  So here are Detroit's own The Dramatics singing live in San Francisco.

Although The Dramatics were not with Motown records they are from Detroit.  I remember The Dramatics from when I was a kid.  I used to see them occasionally at church since my Sunday School teacher was the mother of one of the group's members. This was back in their heyday, and yes, they dressed off stage as flashy as when they were on stage causing quite a few stares from the female church members :)

What a great way to start or end the day in the D! The singing in the video starts around 1:14. So turn up those computer speakers and enjoy Ron Banks and The Dramatics singing "What You See, Is What You Get"...

Video Game Review: Swords for Wii

Approved by parents and loved by my kid

Since my son received his Wii system last Christmas, it has become his favorite source of entertainment second to none.  He is a video game junkie who especially loves fighting games with sword play.  So when I was offered the chance to demo a new video game billed as the ultimate sword fighting battle for the Wii, I knew my son would be all in for this review.

The game is called Swords for Wii™ and it enables players to travel through time and space to face-off against masters in battle. Using the Wii Remote, with Wii Motion Plus as the sword, players can experience the realism of 1:1 sword movement, real time blocking and advanced combos! My son loves gore and blood in his movies and games, but thank goodness, Swords for Wii™ is approved by parents since the game does not feature the blood and gore found in other action titles.

My son was so excited when the game arrived that he immediately tore off the plastic and headed straight for his Wii system. Players must make their way from the dojo to the Final Showdown, battling sword masters like Lancelot, night of the Round Table; Armin, the Viking chieftain; Princess Aisha and five additional opponents to be crowned the greatest swordsman of all time.  Players must be quick to react as each rival has a distinct look and home arena that represents their fighting styles. You can play alone or challenge a friend and play together in a variety of training drills to increase skills and learn new combos in training challenges.

Developed by Panic Button, Swords for Wii™ is rated T and has a suggested retail price of $29.99 and is available at Amazon.com (affliate link). My son is loving every minute of this game, especially when he wins against the many sword masters.  Swords for Wii™ is a definite hit at my house.  Watch the video below to see my kid in action.

Enjoy!

Disclosure: I received a complimentary Swords for Wii™ game for the purpose of writing this review.

Diego Rivera Mural from the Detroit Institute of Art
Detroit Institute of Arts Participates in High-Tech Treasure Hunting Game thru 11/30

Geocaching in Wayne, Oakland, Macomb, and Washtenaw Counties

In conjunction with the Detroit Institute of Arts’ (DIA) Inside Out project, the DIA has launched a high-tech treasure hunting game on www.geocaching.com/. To play the game, called Geocaching, players use a GPS device to locate containers hidden outdoors, called geocaches, and then share the experience online.

The Inside Out project has brought framed reproductions of 40 of the DIA’s most famous works to the streets and parks of Wayne, Macomb, Oakland, and Washtenaw counties. At eight of the Inside Out locations, players can find geocaches containing fun treasures like free admission tickets, stickers, temporary tattoos, post cards, and other DIA giveaways. Those who complete the series by visiting all eight locations will receive a special prize at the last location, the DIA. The special prize will be available through Tuesday, Nov. 30.

The museum choose Geocaching as a fun way to further engage the community in the Inside Out project by encouraging people to explore the areas and to meet fellow cachers. On behalf of the museum, the local Geocaching community placed the geocaches at the eight Inside Out locations, among them Orion Oaks Dog Park and Metro Beach Metropark.

To begin the treasure hunt, players must register at http://geocaching.com/ and visit sites.google.com/site/diainsideout/ for links to all eight geocache locations.
