My Adventures in Brandcation 2010: Kissimmee, FL: Bloggy Creek Airboat Rides & Gatorland

Can you find me in this "gators attack" photo?  lol... (click to enlarge)
I hope you are not scared of gators because there are lots of them in Kissimmee...

Today I will continue with my new travel review series called My Adventures in Brandcation: Kissimmee where I am reviewing my recent trip to Kissimmee Florida to attend Brandcation 2010.

Monday, I told you about the beautiful gated vacation home community where I stayed called Global Resort Homes. Tuesday, I wrote about one of the blogger excursions that we took to the Florida EcoSafaries for Indiana Jones type zipling through the Florida wilderness.

Now, I want to tell you about alligators - yes GATORS!  Florida is full of gators and we bloggers saw a ton of them on our second full day as part of Brandcation 2010 Kissimmee.

Our Bloggy Creek Airboat
Our day started out very early in the morning with our excursion to Bloggy Creek AirBoat Rides.  An airboat ride is the best way to see the Florida Everglades up close and personal and Bloggy Creek AirBoat Rides has been in operation since 1994 with 8 seventeen passenger airboats.

Blankets and noice cancelling headphones were a must...
On my last trip to Florida, it was unseasonably cold and this trip was no exception.  We boarded the airboat and covered up with blankets provided by Bloggy Creek.  After we put on our headphones to lessen the noise from the airboat, we were off for our adventure.  Our caption sped through the everglades and stops numerous times to tell us about the native animals and plants.

It was a little too cold and too wet for me to get many photos or video, but I did manage a few shots here and there and a video of us returning to the port.

After the ride, we all posed for our gator photos (I was very glad that the gator's mouth was taped shut) and our "gator attack photo" that you see at the beginning of this post.  I have to say that taking that photo was a boat load of fun and it turned out great!

Gatorland was Great!
After our fun at Bloggy Creek Airboat Rides, we traveled on to the ultimate gator experience - Gatorland. Now I will be honest in saying that I started out with some not so kind preconceived notions of Gatorland.  I did not understand why anyone would want to go to an attraction built solely around alligators, but I ended up having a fantastic time and even calling home while still at Gatorland to tell my son about the experience!

Gatorland has some exciting attractions!
I experienced two things at Gatorland that I still cannot believe that I did - I feed raw chicken to a group of giant gators that were only two feet away from me and not inside of any protective enclosures and I sat on the back of a huge gator. But I am getting ahead of myself...

Me feeding raw chicken to the gators while at Gatorland!  Oh my...
Hungry Gators - Do Not Enter!!!
We bloggers got to experience a private gator feeding while at Gatorland. I was in the first group of bloggers to get to fed the gators. The handler opened the gate and let eleven of us in at a time - and then shut and locked the gate behind us! The gators actually acted like trained animals. The handler had a stick which he used to draw a line in the sand. He then called the gators and they came out of the water and stopped at the line - I could not believe it. We then took turns tossing raw chicken to the gators. I was scared and excited like I was riding a roller coaster at Cedar Point. I could not believe that I did it. The gators stayed at the line while the next groups of bloggers fed them and then they turned and went back into the water...

Alligator Wrestling???
After I fed those hungry gators, I was pretty much game for anything, including our next activity - Alligator Wrestling! Gatorland has a stage and arena seating setup just for alligator wrestling. It is a full show where the handlers give fun facts about the gators and even includes some slap-stick comedy routines.

But of course the main attraction is the wrestling where the handler asks a cute kid from the audience to pick a gator from the water. The handler then proceeds to tell us all ton of gator facts and jokes all while wrestling the gator. My mouth was open in shock the entire time.

After the show, the audience can then take their own photos with the alligators. I cannot believe that I did it. When I told my son, he said that I was a super mom! NOTE: No gators were harmed in the wrestling. This one walked back into the water to live happily ever after.

As you can see, day two of my Brandcation trip was totally exciting and I was glad when we were able to go back to our luxury condos at Global Resort Homes to rest up. I am now getting down to the end of my Brandcation experience so watch for my last review in this series where I will tell all about our night time activities in Kissimmee, Florida as part of Brandcation 2010 Kissimmee.

Save 5% on EVERY PURCHASE with the TARGET RED CARD!

Do you know about the Target Red Card and the 5% discount on ALL purchases?

My favorite store bar none is Target. It is one stop shopping for everything that I need (including food) and it has great deals on clearance items.

About two months ago, I found out about the Target Red Card, which saves the holder 5% on ANYTHING in Target.  Now this is not a cash back program.  The 5% comes off at the time of purchase.  And when I say ANYTHING that Target sells, that is what I mean.

I used my Target Red Card to save 5% on the Wii video games that I bought my son for Christmas. To all you folks that want a Apple iPad, if you buy it at Target, you get 5% off the list price.

So what are you waiting for? Click here to apply for the Target Red Card

Don't worry if you have less that perfect credit because Target also has a Red Card Debit Card so everyone can save 5%.

2010 IN REVIEW: First Lady Michelle Obama at Wayne State University in Detroit 5/26/10

One Detroiter's View of Michelle Obama

On May 26th, First Lady Michelle Obama paid a visit to Detroit to support mentoring.  She spoke at Wayne State University to a packed crowd.  I had to to work that day, but my friend Linda braved the crowds and the heat (in the 90's) and was front and center to see the First Lady.

I have been asking to see her photos for a while, and see sent me some to share with my FREEISMYLIFE readers.  So as 2010 draws to an end, let's remember this day where Detroit was proudly front and center on the national map...

To see and hear the First Lady addressing Detroit, click on the Live Stream below.  After the ad finishes, you can fast forward to where the First Lady is being introduced to the crowd at the 1:25 mark...

Travel Review: My Adventures in Brandcation 2010: Kissimmee, FL: Florida EcoSafaries

Indiana Jackie all harnessed up and ready...
Forget Disney for once and Zipline through the Florida wilderness...

Yesterday, I started my new travel review series called My Adventures in Brandcation: Kissimmee where I am reviewing my recent trip to Kissimmee Florida to attend Brandcation 2010.

In my last post, I told you about the beautiful gated vacation home community where I stayed called Global Resort Homes. Today I am going to tell you about one of the blogger excursions that we on to the Florida EcoSafaries. Florida EcoSafaries is an Eco-Attraction with a cause. 30% of all Safari revenues go to support the Allen Broussard Conservancy, a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving and protecting the fragile ecosystems of Florida's native wilderness.

Chilling on the main porch waiting for the adventure to begin...
A few of the animals on the property....
On Florida EcoSafaries, you can choose to zipline, ride a coach, or horseback ride through the Florida wilderness.  Now if you could not guess from the photo of me in the pink harness, we bloggers went on the zipline safari.  I have been on a zipline so I was a little aware of what to expect.  But the zipline at the Howell Nature Center here in the Detroit area is only one line long.  At the Florida EcoSafaries, the adventure consists of 7 ziplines and 2 suspended air foot bridges (think Indiana Jones).

All ready to go...
Time to climb the tower...
This adventure is not for the faint of heart, but we all had a blast. After getting harnessed up and getting a safety lesson, it was time to climb the tower to the first zipline. Florida EcoSafaries practices thorough safety measures and we were tethered at all times. Once you climb the first tower, you don't touch land again until you cross 7 ziplines and 2 foot bridges.

The footbridges were more intimidating than the ziplines...
After our adventure, we had worked up a good appetite that was satisfied by a great lunch in the main house at Florida EcoSafaries.  And after our safari adventure, it was great to be able to go back to our luxury vacation homes at Global Resort Homes.

I would highly recommend Florida EcoSafaries for a great and different way to experience Florida that also helps support the Florida ecosystem.

Watch for my next review in this series where I will tell all about another fabulous Florida excursion that we bloggers took as part of Brandcation 2010 Kissimmee.

Sixth Annual "Hugs, Not Bullets" Rally 12/29 10:30am DOWNTOWN DETROIT

Metro Detroiters urged NOT to Celebrate the New Year with Gunfire

Local high school students, faith-based groups and law enforcement officials to take a stand to end celebratory gun fire in metro Detroit on Wednesday, December 29th

Youth Leaders of Neighborhood Service Organization¹s (NSO) Youth Initiatives Project (YIP), faith-based groups and the law enforcement community will team up with Chief Ralph Godbee and Councilman James Tate for the sixth annual "Hugs, Not Bullets" campaign kick-off on Wednesday, December 29, 2010 at 10:30 a.m. The kick off rally, aimed at reducing celebratory gunfire and gun violence in metro Detroit will take place in front of the Spirit of Detroit Statue on Woodward at Jefferson Avenue.

The yearlong youth-driven campaign will focus on student-led activities that involve community and classroom workshops on gun violence, celebratory gunfire, bullying and gang activity. Youth leaders of YIP will work with other high schools, middle schools and elementary schools to engage students on the importance of conflict resolution and productive ways to settle disputes. The campaign will also distribute trigger locks and gun safety brochures throughout the community.

NSO¹s YIP program gives future youth leaders the skills and knowledge they need to be the leaders of tomorrow. Participants include individuals who have experienced gun violence on some level. YIP members plan and organize activities designed to promote non-violence and substance abuse prevention.

Don't Let These Stats Continue in 2011...
In 2007, 3,067 youth were killed by a firearm in the United States for an of average of 8 children and teens ages 0-19 killed every day. In 2008, 20,702 children and teens ages 0-19 were injured with a gun in the U.S. In 2009, 82% of murder victims, ages 12 to 24 years old, were killed with a firearm. Community violence, including gun violence, has the equivalent emotional impact on children as war or natural disaster.

Come be a Part of the Solution...
Join Chief Ralph Godbee, Councilman James Tate Frank McGhee, Neighborhood Service Organization Youth Initiatives Project and the Youth Leaders of YIP
WHEN: Wednesday, December 29, 2010 at 10:30 a.m.

Travel Review: My Adventures in Brandcation 2010: Kissimmee, FL: Global Resort Homes

Discovering Kissimmee Florida in a whole new way...

In November, I was part of a wonderful blogger experience called a Brandcation.  Brandcations are the invention of mom blogger Trisha Haas at Momdot.com and consists of a group of bloggers traveling to a city and experiencing first hand some of the brands that make the area great.

On this trip I was part of 35 mommy bloggers who brandcation'ed in Kissimmee, Florida. I have been to Kissimmee twice in the last few years, but I have never ventured outside of staying on Disney property and going to Disney World and Universal Studio. Brandcation really took me out of my comfort zone and allowed me to see Kissimmee is a whole brand new light.  So come with me as a share in a series of blog posts entitled My Adventures in Brandcation: Kissimmee.

Global Resort Homes - Like being at home, but better!
This post is about where we stayed while in Kissimmee. Instead of staying in a hotel, we bloggers stayed in four homes that were part of Global Resort Homes. Global Resort Homes is a gated community of privately owned rental homes that is only 2 1/2 miles from Disney World.

I have only stayed in Disney properties when I visited Disney World, so staying in a Global Resort Home property was an adventure for me. The house where I stayed had 5 bedrooms, 4 bathrooms, a living room, a dining room, an eat-in kitchen, a family room, a laundry room, a pool and a two car garage.  And the daily rental on this type of home is around the same price as a moderately priced Disney property hotel room.

If you want to travel to Disney World with your extended family and friends, this is a great deal.  Every home amenity is included in these rental properties and some of the homes are even adjacent to playscapes for the kids.  The house where I stayed was better than my own home with a beautiful kitchen that included stainless steel appliances and cherry wood cabinets.

The bedrooms are all beautiful and range from rooms with king size beds and attached bathrooms to rooms with two twin beds decorated in kid friendly themes.  All the bedrooms include flat panel televisions.

You need to bring a few things with you...
You will need your own transportation to get from your Global Resort Home to Disney World and the other entertainment properties. The rental office can schedule a shuttle to Disney properties, but the cost is not cheap.  You will also need to make a grocery store stop for your own food (to cook in the fabulous kitchen), paper towel, bathroom tissue, soap, personal care items and laundry detergent. All other items are included in the rental such as pots, pans, silverware, sheets and towels.

To find out more about Global Resort Homes, follow them on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/globalresorthomes.
