THE ARTS

As one of the nation’s premier art shows, the Juried Fine Art Show again will be a high point of this year’s festival, with high-quality artists from across the continent vying for cash awards totaling $7,500. The jury competition was fierce this year, with more than 400 artists applying for the opportunity to be a part of the show. It will feature art in 14 mediums, including ceramics, fabric and fiber, leather, painting, photography, sculpture, wood, digital art, drawing, graphics and printmaking, glass, jewelry and metal. Artists will come from all over North America, including nearly three-dozen from Michigan and 40 who are completely new, to display, share and sell their work. Festival patrons have the opportunity to peruse works at more than 140 booth spaces.

Festival Cinema-Style
The DIA will bring the memorable museum experience to the streets of Royal Oak this year. For the first time at the festival, the DIA will feature an outdoor motion picture, a medium that has played an important and continuing role at the DIA since 1928. The DIA’s ongoing program, Detroit Film Theatre, will present the internationally acclaimed, animated film A Cat In Paris for the kids and cinema buffs alike. The film stars Dino, a cat who lives a double life as a little girl’s lovable pet by day, and a sly “cat” burglar by night. A Cat in Paris pays homage to classic noir and gangster films with help from a sizzling jazz soundtrack that features legendary artist, Billie Holiday. The film is brought to life with help from Oscar® winners Anjelica Huston and Marcia Gay Harden, A Cat in Paris is a fun, entertaining film that can be enjoyed by all. The 65-minute program will be shown inside the Oakland County Parks Kids Zone from 8:30 – 10 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings.

MC Hammer will close out the festival on Monday
