FREE DSO Community Concerts - Detroit, Monroe, Waterford, Sterling Heights - 9/20, 9/22-9/23

Free seat reservations available online now...

For the eighth consecutive year, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra (DSO) will perform four free community concerts to kick off its new season at venues across Metro Detroit, presented by DTE Energy Foundation. All four concerts will be conducted by Yaniv Segal and feature classical and pops favorites by Copland, Mozart, Rossini, and John Williams.

This year’s concerts will take place in:

• DETROIT on Thursday, September 20 at 10:45 a.m. at Greater Grace Temple

• WATERFORD on Thursday, September 20 at 7:30 p.m. at Waterford Kettering High School

• MONROE on Saturday, September 22 at 8 p.m. at Meyer Theater (on the campus of Monroe County Community College)

• STERLING HEIGHTS on Sunday, September 23 at 3 p.m. at Sterling Heights High School

“The DSO is dedicated to connecting with communities in and around Detroit throughout the year, and these free concerts that launch our season have become a great way to demonstrate that commitment” said DSO President and CEO Anne Parsons. “We are grateful to the DTE Energy Foundation for this partnership that promotes and enables unique opportunities for accessibility and we deeply value our historic collaboration. As we make the tough choices around the annual selection of host venues, we invite others to join in this support so that more opportunities can be offered to the many areas of our city where we have yet to visit.”

For more than 50 years the DTE Energy Foundation, the philanthropic arm of DTE Energy, has supported the DSO and its cultural programs, and the Foundation is proud to once again help the Orchestra bring music to diverse communities throughout Southeast Michigan. In the spring of 2016, the DTE Energy Foundation awarded the DSO with a three-year grant to continue offering these free community concerts each fall. It also includes endowment support for music education, senior citizen outreach, and additional community engagement programming.

“The Community Concert Series is a partnership event that we look forward to sharing with our communities each year to bring local residents, youth, and families together and provide the opportunity to hear a world-class orchestra play in their own backyard,” said Lynette Dowler, president of the DTE Energy Foundation. “By partnering with the DSO, we’re hoping to inspire others to pursue culturally enriching experiences or careers that enhance their quality of life.”

While the concerts are free admission, a seat reservation is required for entry. Seats can be reserved now at dso.org or by clicking on the following links:

FREE Dearborn Main Library Blockbusters Film Series - July August September 2018

Blockbusters Free Film Series

HFCL Auditorium
16301 Michigan Avenue, Dearborn, MI
(313) 943-2330
Monday Evenings
7:00 p.m.

JULY 2 - DARKEST HOUR (2017) - As Hitler?s forces storm across the European landscape and close in on the United Kingdom, Winston Churchill (Gary Oldman) is elected new Prime Minister. With his party questioning his every move, and King George VI (Ben Mendelsohn) skeptical of his new political leader, it is up to Churchill to lead his nation and protect them from the most dangerous threat ever seen. (Rated PG-13. 125 min.)

JULY 9 - LA VIE EN ROSE (2007) - The story of Edith (Marion Cotillard), the daughter of a street singer and a circus acrobat. Abandoned by her mother and then by her father she was raised by her grandmother, who ran a brothel. There, one of the prostitutes later adopted her, until her father returned to steal her away and put her to work in his act. Finding that his sidewalk-act was doing badly, her father commanded her, "Do something!" Exposed to music by her mother and the women in the brothel, she sang "La Marseilles," and Edith Piaf was born. (Rated PG-13. 140 min.)

JULY 16 - LOVING VINCENT (2017) - The world?s first feature-length, oil-painted animation. Loving Vincent reveals the life and controversial death of Vincent van Gogh as told by his paintings and by the characters that inhabit them. The intrigue unfolds through interviews with the characters closest to Vincent and through dramatic reconstructions of the events leading up to his death. The film features 120 of Vincent van Gogh?s greatest paintings. The plot, drawn from the 800 letters written by the painter himself, leads us to the significant people and events in the time prior to his unexpected death. Every shot is painted just as Vincent himself painted. (PG-13. 94 min.)

JULY 23 - QUEEN OF KATWE (2016)  - To be African is to be an underdog in the world. To be Ugandan is to be an underdog in Africa. To be from Katwe is to be an underdog in Uganda. To be a girl is to be an underdog in Katwe.? Disney presents an inspirational film based on the vibrant true story of an Ugandan girl, Phiona (Madina Nalwanga), whose life changes forever when she discovers that she has an amazing talent for chess. A celebration of the human spirit. (Rated PG. 124 min.)

JULY 30 - MATILDA (1996) - A family classic for all ages, Mara Wilson stars as Matilda, a super-smart little girl who?s woefully misunderstood by her parents (Dany DeVito and Rhea Perlman), her brother, and an evil school principal. But with the help of a brave best friend and a wonderful teacher, Matilda discovers she doesn?t have to get mad to get even. (Rated PG. 98 mins.)

AUGUST 6 - KISS OF THE SPIDER WOMAN (1985) - "Kiss of the Spider Woman" tells one of those rare and entrancing stories where one thing seems to happen while another thing is really happening. There are passages in the movie that seem to be absolutely self-contained, and then a word or gesture will reveal that they have depths we can only guess. By the end of the film, what started out as a contest between two opposite personalities has expanded into a choice between two completely different attitudes toward life. And the choice is not sexual, although for a long time it seems so. It is between freedom and slavery. (Rated R. 120 mins.)

AUGUST13 - 3:10 TO YUMA (2007)  - Infamous outlaw Ben Wade (Russell Crowe) and his vicious gang of thieves and murderers have plagued the Southern Railroad. When Wade is captured, Civil War veteran Dan Evans (Christian Bale) volunteers to deliver him alive to the ?3:10 to Yuma,? a train that will take the killer to trial. But with Wade?s outfit on their trail?and dangers at every turn?the mission soon becomes a violent, impossible journey toward each man?s destiny. (Rated R. 122 mins.)

AUGUST 20 - ELIZABETH (1998) - England, 1554. Young, passionate Elizabeth Tudor (Cate Blanchett) comes to the throne amidst bloody turmoil. Among her courtiers are the venerable Sir William Cecil (Richard Attenborough), her lover the Earl of Leicester (Joseph Fiennes), the imperious Duke of Norfolk (Christopher Eccleston), and her advisor Walshingham (Geoffery Rush). She must learn to weigh her counsel carefully and ignore her private yearnings if she is to keep her crown?and her head. (Rated R. 124 mins.)

AUGUST 27 - BREADWINNER (2017)  - Hailed as ?the best animated feature of 2017.? Parvana is an 11 year old girl growing up under the Taliban in Afghanistan in 2001. When her father is wrongfully arrested, Parvana cuts off her hair and dresses like a boy in order to support her family. Working alongside her friend Shauzia, Parvana discovers a new world of freedom?and danger. With undaunted courage, Parvana draws strength from the fantastical stories she invents as she embarks on a quest to find her father and reunite her family. (Rated PG-13. 94 mins.)

SEPTEMBER 3 - NO PROGRAM?LABOR DAY

SEPTEMBER 10 - THE POST (2017) - Katharine Graham (Meryl Streep) is the first female publisher of a major American newspaper-The Washington Post. With help from editor Ben Bradlee (Tom Hanks), Graham races to catch up with The New York Times to expose a massive cover-up of government secrets that spans three decades and four U.S. presidents. Together, they must overcome their differences as they risk their careers--and very freedom--to help bring long-buried truths to light. (Rated PG-13. 114 mins.)

SEPTEMBER 17 - GORILLAS IN THE MIST (1988)  - Based on the true story of young anthropologist Dian Fossey (Sigourney Weaver) who travels to the African mountains to study the rare gorillas. In this incredible paradise, which she describes as being ?as close to God as you can get,? her interest in the gorillas turns to passion and finally obsession. For her efforts, fighting to protect and seek justice, you may applaud what she does. Or you may condemn it. But you will never forget the passion that turned her into a legend. (Rated PG-13. 129 mins.)
