FREE September Detroit Symphony Orchestra (DSO) Community Concerts in Detroit, Fair Haven, Taylor, Waterford - RSVP

Free seat reservations available now for September DSO community performances...

Four Southeast Michigan venues have been selected for free Detroit Symphony Orchestra (DSO) concerts presented by DTE Energy Foundation. The concert locations were nominated and voted on by the public in the #DTEPowersDSO venue competition.

The four free performances will take place Fri., Sep. 23, at Greater Grace Temple in Detroit and at Heinz C. Prechter Performing Arts Center in Taylor; on Sat., Sep. 24 at Waterford Mott High School Performing Arts Center in Waterford; and Sun., Sep. 25, 2016 at Anchor Bay High School in Fair Haven, conducted by DSO Assistant Conductor and Phillip and Lauren Fisher Community Ambassador Michelle Merrill.

This is the sixth consecutive year that DTE Energy Foundation has powered free DSO community concerts.

Pop-up performances by DSO musicians at Milford Farmer’s Market, Kuhnhenn Brewing Company, and the Palmer Park Art Fair helped to solicit nominations for the free performances. The #DTEPowersDSO venue competition puts the power in the hands of Metro Detroiters and takes the superb artistry of the DSO beyond the walls of Orchestra Hall.

For more than four weeks the DSO received venue nominations from all corners of the region, and the final decisions were made with the help of our most important partners—community members.

Waterford Mott High School Performing Arts Center was selected as an alternative venue to Clarkston High School, which received a high number of votes but will unfortunately be unable to host a DSO performance due to a scheduling conflict. The DSO chose Waterford Mott to ensure that those who voted for Clarkston High School will still have access to a community concert in their area.

For 50 years the DTE Energy Foundation has supported the DSO and its cultural programs, and the Foundation is proud to help the Orchestra bring music to diverse and underserved communities throughout Southeast Michigan. On May 23, 2016, DTE Energy Foundation awarded the DSO a historic $2 million gift that includes a three-year commitment to continue offering these free community concerts each fall. It also includes endowment support for music education, senior citizen outreach and additional community engagement programming.

“The arts awaken curiosity, creativity and the desire for knowledge—things that DTE Energy believes empower both people and the communities they live in,” said Faye Nelson, Vice President at DTE Energy and board chair and President of the DTE Energy Foundation. “We are proud to play such a pivotal role in making these community concerts happen year after year, and ensuring they will continue for years to come. Through this unique opportunity, our friends, children, and neighbors across the region can experience the joy and beauty of listening to great music made by such talented musicians."

“Performing throughout metro Detroit is the perfect way to kick off the concert season each year, and the Foundation’s generous partnership makes it possible for us to reach ever increasing and diverse audiences,” said Anne Parsons, DSO President & CEO. “We are honored to make ourselves accessible to the very community that sustains us through work that is rewarding to our collective well-being.”

While the concerts are free admission, a seat reservation is required for entry. Seats can be reserved now at dso.org, by phone at (313) 576-5111, or in person at the Max M. and Marjorie S. Fisher Music Center Box Office (3711 Woodward Ave., Detroit).

The Box Office is open for both phone and in-person reservations Monday through Friday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. EDT.

All concerts are general admission (no seats will be assigned), and all seating is first-come, first-served.

Concert Schedule is as follows - follow links to reserve FREE tickets:

Special thanks to Gardner-White for inviting me to be part of their Taylor store re-opening celebration which included a limo ride to the store and a special blogger goodie bag. .#gardnerwhite #comfyintaylor

Gardner-White Furniture knows how to throw a store opening party....

On Thursday, April 21st, I and four other Metro Detroit bloggers were the guests of Gardner-White furniture for an in-store celebration to mark the official re-opening on their store location in Taylor, MI.

As a blogger, I have been invited to some nice events, but never one that involved a limo ride.  As a mom, I am always the one driving my son back and forth to events everyday.  But on Thursday, Gardner-White sent a limo to my home to pick me up and I got to ride in style to the Taylor store celebration along with bloggers including Rachel from RedesigningHappiness and Aly from TheMichiganMom,

When the limo pulled up in the Gardner-White Taylor store parking lot, we were greeted on the red carpet by none other the the owner and star of the Gardner-White TV ads, Steve Tronstein.

Once we entered the store, the celebration had already began with a live performance by Ferndale-based award-winning singer-songwriter Jill Jack singing her hit song "Northern Michigan."  I was able to capture some of her performance in the video inserted above and at this link on my youTube channel.

This celebration, which was FREE and open to the public, included not only good music, but also FREE food, FREE makeup makeovers, and FREE massages.  Of course with all that great FREE going on, everyone was having a wonderful time.

The Taylor Gardner-White furniture selection is a mix of many styles. I really loved this
table with 2 benches and the of course the clearance area :)
And of course, everyone was also checking out the Gardner-White furniture selection, including the clearance center.

If you live near the Taylor, MI area, be sure to drop by and check out the newly re-modeled Gardner-White Taylor store location for yourself at:

Gardner-White Taylor

FREE September Detroit Symphony Orchestra (DSO) Community Concerts in Taylor, Detroit, Warren and Ann Arbor - RSVP

DSO ANNOUNCES FREE COMMUNITY CONCERTS PRESENTED BY DTE ENERGY FOUNDATION..

Enter to win special prize package through social media contest using #DTEpowersDSO

Four venues in Southeast Michigan have been selected for free Detroit Symphony Orchestra (DSO) concerts presented by DTE Energy Foundation.

DSO Music Director Leonard Slatkin will conduct the FREE concerts, beginning Thursday, Sept. 24 through Sunday, Sept. 27. The Prechter Center for the Performing Arts in Taylor, Greater Grace Temple in Detroit, Lincoln High School in Warren and Pioneer High School Schreiber Auditorium in Ann Arbor will host the 2015 DTE Energy Foundation Presents the DSO Community Concerts.

Last summer, the DSO and the DTE Energy Foundation asked the public to nominate community venues to receive a free concert, to which there was an overwhelming response. Nearly 14,000 votes were received from community members, and only four venues could be chosen. To build upon the enthusiasm, the DSO selected community venues for the 2015 series from last year’s nominations.

“This year, we’re expanding our reach into additional Michigan communities to bring new opportunities for people to experience, appreciate and learn about music from a world-class orchestra,” said Faye Nelson, DTE Energy vice president, Public Affairs, and president of the DTE Energy Foundation. “Our communities are extremely important to us at DTE Energy, and we believe that music, art and cultural activities and events are integral to a strong quality of life. Through our continued partnership with the DSO, we positively impact families and the region.”

This is the fifth consecutive year that DTE Energy Foundation has generously sponsored free DSO community concerts. Eligibility for venue selection was based on a group of logistical criteria along with strong evidence of community support.

While the concerts are free admission, a ticket is required for entry. Tickets are available now on the DSO Website, the DSO to Go mobile app, by phone at 313.576.5111 or in person at the Max M. and Marjorie S. Fisher Music Center Box Office (3711 Woodward Ave., Detroit.)

This year, the DSO introduces a unique social media opportunity for lucky community members to win a prize package including complimentary concert tickets to a DSO Classical, Pops, Jazz or Young People Family concert in Midtown Detroit; a backstage tour and free food and beverage vouchers.

Those interested in participating can submit a photo or 15-second video on Instagram, Facebook or Twitter showing where and how they enjoy music, whether that means playing an instrument, rocking in the car, viewing a show at Orchestra Hall, watching street concerts, going to venues or learning something new.

To enter, a public social media account will be needed to post and view the photo or video, and must include the hashtag #DTEpowersDSO and tag @detroitsymphony.

Entries must be submitted by Sept. 28. Winners will be chosen at random. For more details, go to dso.org/dtepowersdso.

A schedule of the DTE Energy Foundation Presents DSO Community Concerts is as follows:

The Detroit Symphony Orchestra (DSO) will present four FREE concerts this fall at Lakeview High School in St. Clair Shores, Greater Grace Temple in Detroit, Heinz C. Prechter Educational and Performing Arts Center in Taylor, and Clawson High School in Clawson. These concerts represent a multi-year sponsorship from the DTE Energy Foundation.

Last summer, the DSO and the DTE Energy Foundation asked the public to nominate their community venues to receive a free DSO concert, to which there was an overwhelming response. While nearly 100 venues were nominated, with nearly 5,000 notes of support from community members, the DSO could only choose five last season. In order to build upon that enthusiasm, venues from that pool of communities were incorporated into the series this year.

“We are thrilled with the public response to the DSO and DTE Energy Foundation’s initiative to make classical music as accessible as possible,” said Mike Chriss, DTE Energy Director- Corporate and Governmental Affairs. "We are grateful for the opportunity to help share the artistic excellence of the DSO with the surrounding metropolitan communities."

Eligibility for selection of these venues was based on a group of logistical criteria along with strong evidence of community support (criteria are outlined fully at dso.org/dtemusic).

The DSO continues to serve its immediate community through collaborations with local schools, the Detroit Rush program (which provides a $15 ticket to any classical or jazz concert at Orchestra Hall for Detroit residents) and new initiatives such as a partnership with Detroit Medical Center Children’s Hospital providing musical therapy to patients.

Taylor, MI 48180

According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, tooth decay is the most common chronic childhood disease in America. More than 50 percent of five to nine year-old children have one cavity or filling and 25 percent of poor children have not seen a dentist before entering kindergarten.

Delta Dental, in partnership with the Michigan Department of Community Health, will host a FREE dental clinic at the Western Wayne Family Health Center (26650 Eureka Road, Taylor MI 48180) for underserved children tomorrow from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m.

This event is FREE and open to children grades 1st – 7th.

Parents interested in registering their children should call (734) 941-4991. Registration is encouraged but not required.

Sealants and varnishes are part of a child’s preventative dental maintenance. They will help to prevent cavities, but does not replace fillings. For children without dental coverage, sealant and varnish could mean the difference between a life with good oral health and one plagued with dental problems.

Participating children will also receive FREE oral health kits including a toothbrush, dental floss, timer and other goodies.

Enjoy!
