What to buy in January - Discount Fitness Gear

January is a perfect month to step-up your fitness game with bargain priced fitness gear...

The most popular New Year's resolutions involve fitness and health.  In 2016, I finally lost 10 of the 15 pounds that I put on over the last 5 years (thank you Lord!) and I want more than anything to keep that weight off.

I usually look very grubby when I workout and I wanted to step-up my fitness look this year.  So new fitness gear was definitely on my "to buy" list  and January is the perfect month to get fitness gear at bargain prices.

Target has some great sales going on for their fitness gear,,
I do most of my shopping at Target so it was hard to miss all the discounts that Target has on fitness gear.  I saw an in-store display for this C9 Champion gear (currently on sale) and had to try it all on.

The zip-neck long sleeve black top has a gray reflective strip across the front. I love that the back is longer than the front so that my back-side is covered and that the sleeves have finger holes to cover my hands. The black pants have a stylish dark pink and gray reflective strip bottom that zips open and there is a zip pocket on the thigh where I can hide a key, cash or credit card.

A bought my fitness outfit for 25% off. Target has different fitness gear on sale each week so check out their selection that next time you are in-store or online at Target.com.

I also needed a new sports bra and found a total bargain on clearance at JCPenney for only $7 - that is my kind of price.

Define Your Inspiration (DYI) - Fitness Gear designed for Women
While getting my fitness game plan down, I was contacted by a fitness company called DYI to try out a piece of their fitness gear.

Define Your Inspiration (DYI) is a company that makes femine athletic apparel designed to make women feel great about getting fit. DYI's creator Leslie Denby, started the company to help women break boundaries through exercising to be physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually balanced.

DYI clothing is made in the USA in Houston, Texas.  I was sent for review a pair of Butterfly Effect Signature Tights (currently on sale)  that are designed for comfort with a high-waist with no elastic. They coordinate perfectly with the black top that I bought a Target so that I can save money by mixing and matching all my fitness clothing.

So if you are like me and want to step up your fitness game in 2017, January is the month to take advantage of the fitness gear sales and discounts so you are prepared to work out all year long without breaking the bank.

Enjoy!

HEALTH: Clearasil helps keep my Son's Face Clear and Clean for Less #ClearasilMom #sponsored #MC

Disclosure: I participated in an Influencer Activation on behalf of Influence Central for Clearasil. I received product samples to facilitate my review as well as a promotional item to thank me for my participation

There is no need to buy expensive acne treatments when Clearasil works great for far less money...

About three years ago, my son started experiencing problems with his skin.  When my son turned 11 years old, he started having acne breakouts on his forehead. A trip to the doctor told me what I had figured - he was going through early puberty which was causing the breakouts.  Since I had not experienced acne growing up, I really did not know how to handle the situation.

Since my son was so young when the acne stated, I did not want to use any chemicals on his skin if I didn't have to. So we stopped using oils on his skin and hair and that took care of most of the breakouts. But over the summer months, the breakouts got worst on his forehead and even spread to the rest of his face. I knew it was time to do something about it when I realized my son was no longer looking in the mirror because he did not like the image that was being reflected back at him.

Clearasil to the Rescue...
I went to the store to look at acne products and quickly became overwhelmed by the sheer number. After some online research of the subject of acne, I decided to try out Clearasil PerfectaWash with other natural methods to see if we could stop the breakouts.

Within a week of using the Clearasil PerfectaWash, my son's face was totally clear of acne with the exception of the middle of his forehead. I did some more online research which suggested incorporating a small amount of maximum strength benzoyl peroxide gel to just the problem area. So I went to Target and bought a 1oz tube of benzoyl peroxide gel. I applied just a tiny dab to my son's problem spot on his forehead twice a day after using the Clearasil PerfectaWash and within a few days, my son's skin was totally free of acne.

Different Product, Same Great Clearasil Results...
Over the years, it became harder for me to find the Clearasil PerfectaWash in retail stores, but I still wanted my son to stay with using Clearasil products because they had worked so well keeping my son's skin clear and clean.  So while shopping at Target earlier this year, I came across another Clearasil product called Clearasil Daily Clear Hydra-Blast Oil Free Face Wash.

Just like Clearasil PerfectaWash, Clearasil Daily Clear Hydra-Blast Oil Free Face Wash works great at keeping breakouts to a minimum while also being gentle on my son's skin.  His face is clean, clear, and non-oily which he loves.

And I love that Clearasil Daily Clear Hydara-Blast Oil Free Face Wash works great and I can buy it at my local Target for under $5 a tube.

Clearasil Daily Clear Hydra-Blast Oil Free Face Wash is gentle enough for everyday use.  But every so often, my son will experience a breakout where he needs more help, especially on his forehead.  In the past we would just try our best to work through the breakout with the help of a little generic benzoyl peroxide gel until the breakout was over.  But now, thanks to Mom Central, my son got to try out a complimentary sample of another great product from Clearasil called Clearasil Ultra Rapid Action Gel Wash.

Clearasil Ultra Rapid Action Gel Wash is made especially for when my son experiences a breakout.  This product is formulated with maximum strength acne medication to give visibly clearer skin in as little as 12 hours.  This is really great because no teenage wants to be seen when a breakout occurs so the quicker it is over the better.

Still loving Clearasil after All these Years...
Clearsasil products have been a staple in my home now for 3 years and I could not be happier with the results that my son is getting.

My son has been using Clearasil Daily Clear HydraBlast Oil Free Face Wash now for 8 months and it it really helps to keep his skin oil free and clear and now I am glad that he is using Clearasil Ultra Rapid Action Gel Wash for when breakouts occur to get back to normal quickly.

If you have a teenager that is experiencing acne, you can find out more about Clearasil products, including giveaways and coupons (two of my favorite things), follow Clearasil on Facebook, Clearasil on Twitter, and check out the Clearasil Website.

HEALTH + TECH: Earn Walgreens #BalanceRewards for connecting your Fitness Tracker #shop #cbias

This shop was compensated by #CollectiveBias, Inc. and its advertiser Walgreens #BalanceRewards. All opinions are my own.

I love getting rewarded for making healthy choices...

Since the beginning of the year, I have been on a mission to get and stay in shape.  Five mornings a week, I wake up at 5:30am to ride my stationary bike before getting ready for work. I have also been walking during my lunch break for years, but this year I have taken it to a new level by keeping count of my number of steps with my new Fitbit Flex Fitness Tracker bracelet.

Earlier this year, I set a goal of 5000 steps per day which I have since upped to 10,000 steps per day.  And to track my weight I also bought a Fitbit Wifi Scale.  Even though I have not been able to get my weight down to where I want it, I still know that if I stay on track with my goals, I will be more healthy and fit for the future.

Funny thing about goals though - they are easy to make but very hard to keep, especially after the initial excitement and newest wears off. So to keep myself motivated, I tend to look for any way that I can to make a game out of fitness. The competitor in me loves to win and thanks to Walgreens, I have found a way to help meet my fitness goals and earn lots of Walgreens Balance Rewards points that I can use to get my Walgreens purchases for FREE!!!

I always keep my Walgreens Balance Rewards card near...
I have loved shopping at Walgreens for years and I always make sure that I have my Walgreens Balance Rewards card with me so that I can earn points on all my purchases.

But I also made sure to join the Walgreens Balance Rewards for healthy choices program so that I can earn even more rewards points just for keeping fit.

For setup, I used the Walgreens app on my smartphone to access the BR for healthy choices program to set my fitness goals.  I used the Walgreens website to initially pair my Fitbit Flex tracker back in January - the pairing cannot be done using the Walgreens app.

I set my goals for the number of steps I wanted to take per day (I initially set the number to 5000) and frequency of my exercising (my goal has always been to work out 5 days a week).

I earn Walgreens Balance Rewards points for all the steps that I take and also for tracking my weight.  I don't think earning rewards can get any easier than this!

And what I really love is that pairing my Fitbit Flex to the program means that the steps tracked by my Fitbit are automatically uploaded to Walgreens and I don't have to enter the counts by hand.

When I was entering my daily steps by hand, I would forget some days and miss out on my points.  Now that everything is automated, I earn points for every single step which makes me want to take even more steps so that I can earn Walgreens Reward Points even faster - HOLLA TO THE FREE!!!

Thank goodness their is a Walgreens down the street from work...otherwise it may have been a bad health day...
Recently Walgreens really helped me with my fitness goals in a big way. Yesterday morning I was running late to take my son to summer camp and did not get a chance to pack my lunch like I usually do to save money and keep away from the high calorie food in my workplace cafeteria. So after dropping off my son, I made a quick detour to the Walgreens location right down the street from where I work to pick up some Healthy Choice Steamer meals to keep in the work frig for my lunch this week.

And I was able to save 20% off my purchase with a special coupon since it was Walgreens Friends and Family day. And because I had already earned a boat load of Walgreens Balance Rewards points, I was able to redeem some and only pay 71 cents for my purchase.

Fitbit - check! Headphones - check!
Ready to walk and roll :)
When lunchtime rolled around, I got out my headphones and fitness shoes, checked my Fitbit and took my daily walk as scheduled and afterwards was able to eat a healthy lunch as I worked knowing that every step that I took was earning me even more Walgreens Balance Rewards points that I could use toward getting future deals. Now that is the way that I like to roll :)

If you want to also earn Walgreens points just for getting fit, check out the Walgreens Balance Rewards healthy choice program today. You have tons of rewards to gain and nothing to lose ... but weight.

Enjoy!

HEALTH: Strawberry Orange Smash Smoothies get even more Healthy with Splenda #SweetSwaps

I used my new blender to mix up some yummy fruit smoothies sweetened with Splenda Sugar Blend...
I'm making a Healthy "Sweet Swap" with Splenda Sugar Blend...

Disclosure͗ : This post is part of the SPLENDA® 365 Sweet Swaps™ Blogger Program by McNeil Nutritionals, LLC and The Motherhood, who sent me products and compensated me for my time. Opinions, experiences and photos shared here are my own, and I hope you enjoy them.

Experts recommend that women consume no more than 6 tsp. of added sugar daily, but I know that I consume much more than that since I tend to crave sugary sweets all during my day.  Since going through Menopause, I am a lot less interested in eating right and a whole lot more interested in scarfing down sugar and chocolate.

So I was very happy to discover the Splenda 365 Sweet Swaps website where I found tons of advise on how to save calories and eat more healthy by swapping out some of the regular sugar in my diet for zero calorie Splenda products.

As I was going through the Splenda 365 Sweet Swaps website recommendations, I initially planned to try out a recipe for Chocolate Cupcakes covered in Chocolate Icing made with Splenda. But the more I thought about it, the more I wanted to make an even more healthy snack change.

Time to put my new blender to work...
I have been pondering purchasing a blender and making fruit smoothies for the longest, but for some reason I just never did.  But today, I decided that this was the day to buy that blender - along with all the ingredients to make the Strawberry Orange Smash Smoothie recipe on the Splenda.com website.

This is one yummy recipe...
When I am craving something sweet,  I want that craving to be satisfied quickly, so I am sooooo glad that the Splenda recipes are short on ingredients and quick to make….

INGREDIENTS

3 cups frozen strawberries, unsweetened
2/3 cup SPLENDA® No Calorie Sweetener, Granulated
1 1/4 cups orange juice, calcium fortified
1 cup yogurt, plain, non-fat
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/4 cup ice cubes

DIRECTIONS

Add all ingredients to blender. Blender will be full. Mix on low speed for 10 seconds. Remove lid, stir with wooden spoon. Mix on medium speed for 15-20 seconds, remove lid and stir again. Mix on high speed for 15 to 20 seconds or until smooth. Pour into glasses. Serve immediately.

In one minute flat, I had a yummy smoothie that totally satisfied my cravings while keeping it healthy.  And Splenda has even more healthy recipes on their website that I plan to try out.

APP REVIEW: My Diet Coach II - Pro for Android

My Diet Coach II - Pro turns your smartphone into a health and fitness cheerleader...

Disclosure: I received a free download of the "My Diet Coach II - Pro" app and was compensated for my time to review the app. All opinons are my own.

I have written numerous posts this year about my struggle with losing the 15 lbs that I gained since entering menopause. What used to be so easy for me for most of my life has turned into a daily struggle to make better food choices and get more exercise. In the battle of the bulge, I need as many tools in my bag of tricks as I can get.

By now everyone knows how much I love using my smartphone for everything from listening to music, to engaging in social media, to reading books, and especially finding deals.  And with the download of a new app that I have been reviewing, my smartphone is now my fitness and health coach.

The app is called My Diet Coach II - Pro and it is everything that the name says. It is a cute and useful Android app that contains all kinds of ways to help keep me motivated to meet my fitness and health goals.

The main screen of the My Diet Coach II - Pro app contains 8 key areas. The first area at the top of the screen allows you to plainly spell out your main goal so that is it always there to remind you why you need to make changes. My goal is to lose 10 pounds in 6 months. because I want to look and feel my best.

The Diary helps you chart your food and fitness throughout the day
Down the middle of the main screen are four button choices to help you meet your goal.  The first is a food and fitness Journal (Diary) to help plan healthy meals and exercise throughout the day.

I love these reminders
The second button takes you to a list of reminders to help motivate you on the journey to your goal.  The reminders include motivational photos that you can load into the app, random motivational quotes, tips on how to deal with food cravings and make more time for exercise, and lots more.  There are over 30 pre-defined reminders to choose from and the app also allows you to enter your own reminders.

The third button allows you to enter Motivational photos.  Is there an event that you want to look great at or an outfit that you want to fit into?  How about a celebrity whose body image you aspire to?  Well you can upload photos of these images into the app to help to keep you motivated every time you use your smartphone.

The app has tips for everything you can think of...
The fourth button lists tips to help with food cravings, emotional eating, meal planing, vacation eating, getting more exercise and more.

You can earn points by completing challenges...
Along the bottom of the main screen of the My Diet Coach II - Pro app are two more areas - Challenges and Rewards.  Challenges take you out of your comfort zone by asking you to do "good for you" things like drink 8 glasses or water today, or park your car further away from your door.  When you complete a challenge, you earn points that you can use to "buy" Rewards, which are virtual pieces of clothing.

And lastly, there is a PANIC BUTTON on the main screen that help with getting past food cravings by giving you ways to wait for 20 minutes until the craving passes.

I would sum up my review of My Diet Coach II - Pro app as follows -

Pros -
- The app is fun and colorful
- The app is easy to use
- Prominently displaying goals at the top of the main screen makes it easy to remember to eat right and exercise
- The option to add inspirational photos from personal photos and websites is great
- The Challenge section can really help jump start more healthy habits

Cons -
- Does not integrate with mobile fitness tools like the Fitbit or Jawbone Up
- Too many reminders pop up asking the user to rate the app in the Google Play Store
- Would be nice if the image of the man or woman on the main screen could be tailored to look like the app user

Want to try before you buy?

Enjoy!

Here's to Good Health with the @Sonicare_US PowerUp Toothbrush #powerupursmile #cbias #shop

Thanks to Sonicare, my old manual tooth brush is now a great bathroom grout cleaner...

I am a member of Collective Bias@ Social Fabric@ Community.  This shop has been compensated as part of a social shopper insights study for Collective Bias and their client.

In 2013, I have been striving to practice better health in all areas of my life.  From walking at least 10,000 steps per day, to drinking more water, to forcing myself to get more sleep each night, I am doing everything I can to make my health a priority this year.

So when I was given the opportunity to try out the Phillips Sonicare PowerUp Toothbrush, I knew it could be part of helping with my oral health. I have been using a manual toothbrush for years and I wanted to try out the Phillips Sonicare to see if my teeth could be cleaner and brighter - and the Phillips Sonicare PowerUp definitely met my requirements.

For overall health, there is nothing like having a beautiful smile built on the foundation of clean, healthy teeth and gums. My family has had a history of tooth and gum problems. Both my parents lost most of their teeth to health issues when they were young and I did not want to fall into any bad habits that could jeopardize my teeth. So daily brushing, twice a day is something that I have been doing since I was a kid.

But I have often wondered if using a powered toothbrush is better than using a manual one.  And it definitely is with the Phillips Sonicare PowerUp. I don't have to work as hard to get better results and getting to the plaque and food in between my teeth is easier and faster. My teeth definitely feel cleaner.

I would sum up my review as follows -

Pros -
- Gets my teeth cleaner faster than using my manual toothbrush
- Gets to the food and plague between my teeth faster and better than my manual toothbrush
- Economically priced at under $20 for a Sonicare Toothbrush

Cons -
- Make sure you hold on the brush since it is so powerful that it can get away from you

I am definitely sold on using the Phillips Sonicare PowerUp.  And in the sake of recycling, my old manual toothbrush is making a great bathroom grout cleaner.

Priced at $17.97, the Sonicare PowerUp Toothbrush is available for purchase at major retailers like Walmart.

Check out the Evolution of the Toothbrush on the Sonicare Facebook Page
For more information on the Phillips Sonicare PowerUp Toothbrush, follow Sonicare on Twitter and like Sonicare on Facebook where you can check out a cool video on the evolution of the toothbrush.

TECH: The Jawbone Up Smart Device Tracks Fitness, Sleep & Eating Habits #Verizon #KnowYourSelf

Verizon Wireless sells the Jawbone Up in their retail stores
I now know what I am doing right, and doing wrong with my overall health...

Special thanks to Verizon Wireless for loaning product to facilitate this review

Since turning 50, I have gained 15 pounds and lost the ability to fall asleep easily.  These facts are hard for me to admit since I had been able to keep my weight in control for most of my adult life and I used to sleep like a rock.  I have been feeling very out of control of late and not liking it one darn bit.  For me menopause has been an evil task mistress.

I have written more than a few blog posts this year about my weight and sleep struggles and how I am trying to gain back control.  So when Verizon Wireless gave me the opportunity to review a smartphone accessory sold in their retail stores called the Jawbone Up, I jumped at the chance.

The Jawbone Up works with smartphones to track your exercise, sleep and eating patterns - all with one fashionable high tech smart device that you wear on your wrist.

The Jawbone Up is marketed as a "thoughtful combination of engineering and design, custom-made for how we live."  The Jawbone Up is a flexible smart device bracelet that combines with a corresponding smartphone app for Apple or Android devices.

Setup and use are very easy...
To use the device, you first need to download the Jawbone Up app to your smartphone and go through a setup process to add your current weight, height and age.  You also can setup daily goals.

I setup goals to walk 10,000 steps a day and to get 6 1/2 hours of sleep per night. After the setup is complete you start wearing the bracelet which tracks your steps with no further interaction needed.  Twice a day, you connect the device to your smartphone via the headphones port to download the tracking information.  Then using your smartphone, you can view the color charts to see your stats.

I was not getting as much exercise as I thought....
In the past, I have never had to struggle much with my weight.  As long as I did my daily morning exercise bike riding, I was golden.  But, no more.  So I added the goal of doing 10,000 steps a day to try and get my weight under control.  I have been walking twice around my work complex 3-4 times a week since last summer, even through the winter months.  I just knew that I was getting my 10,000 steps a day in - until the Jawbone Up showed me that I was dead wrong.

The Jawbone Up tracks all the steps that you take during the day - every single one.  This is great if you walk or run for exercise like I do at lunch time. But if you do any other type of exercise, like I do with riding a stationary bike in the morning, you have to add that activity in manually.

Adding other types of exercise is pretty easy since it is all menu driven.  To add my daily stationary bike ride, I just choose the type of exercise from the menu pictures, and then add the duration and time of day. Adding all your exercise into the program is key because the Jawbone Up software prepares daily charts that track all your exercise and the calories you burn, both while being active and stationary.

At the end of the day, the Jawbone Up charts tell you how many calories you burned, how many steps you walked or ran, how many miles you traveled, plus the longest time you were active and idle.

I found out from my charts that I was not getting anywhere near my 10,000 steps a day just by walking twice around my work complex.  So I added a third trip around the complex every day and that hit the mark for my steps goal.  Once I hit the 10,000 daily steps, I started losing weight and getting more energy.

All I needed was the data from the Jawbone Up to know what was missing so I could come up with ways to fix the problem.

Jawbone Up Encouragement...
And to help make people more active, the Jawbone Up app has a setting where you can have the bracelet buzz when you have been inactive for a set amount of time.

I have my Jawbone Up set to virbrate when I have been inactive for 90 minutes. I then know it is time to get up from my work desk and at least walk to the bathroom or to the kitchen to get a drink of water.

The Jawbone Up also has insights that pop up for encouragement.  The above screen shot shows one of the insights praising me for averaging over 10,000 steps per day.

I need to take my butt to bed...
I know that I don't sleep worth a dime.  I have known that fact for sometime, but I have not done much to change.  Once my son goes to bed, I get a burst of energy and start working on projects and thinking about projects and getting so wound up that I have trouble falling asleep.  And even after I go to bed, I wake up during the night.  I knew it was bad, but now with the Jawbone Up, I have tons of data that I can use to make a change.

Sleep mode is a manual device setting...
The Jawbone Up can measure the amount of sleep you get and how many times you wake up during the night.  To activate sleep mode, you have to press the mode button on the bracelet once.  The instruction book recommends pressing the button right after cutting off the light when getting into bed - and that has worked very well for me since I have only forgotten to do it 3 night in the past 4 weeks. If the bracelet is not put into sleep mode, it will not track your sleep for the night. In the morning, you can press the button again to take the Jawbone Up out of sleep mode or just take 50 steps and the Jawbone Up takes itself out of sleep mode automatically.

Once the sync with your smartphone is done, you have tons of data on how you slept - and it is eye opening.  From the screen shot above, the Jawbone Up chart indicates that last Saturday night, it took me 16 minutes to fall asleep and I woke up twice during the night.  Of the 6 hours that I was asleep, I was only in deep sleep for approximately 2 hours.  I knew that I don't stay asleep most nights, but it is interesting to know how many times I woke up and for how long.

In addition to tracking activity and sleep, the Jawbone up can also track everything that you eat.  Since I don't believe in counting calories, I have not tried out that feature. But I may have to use it in the future to get my weight under control.

I would sum up my experience with the Jawbone Up as follows -

Pros -
- Bracelet design is very fashionable
- Durable design allows the device to be worn even in the shower
- Tracks every single step you take since you only take off the device to charge it
- Only has to be charged every 10 days and it takes only 30 minutes to fully charge
- No computer needed, only your smartphone and the Jawbone Up Android or Apple app
- Sleep, exercise and food log data can be transfered to other compatible tracking applications
- Cheaper than the Nike Fuel Band

Cons -
- Pricier than the Fitbit Flex
- Manual action to put the device into sleep mode can be easily forgotten when you are tired
- The charging cable is small and easy to lose
- Would be easier if the data could sync through bluetooth instead of having to physically attach the device to the smartphone
- Silver cap has to be removed for syncing - and the cap is easy to lose when it is not on the device
- Only available for Apple and Android devices - sorry  Windows Phone and Blackberry users

Since using the Jawbone Up over the past month, I have lost 3 pounds and have tons of data to help make changes with my fitness and sleep habits.  And since I have to give the loaner Jawbone Up back to Verizon, I will be purchasing my own since the device has now become a pivotal part of my daily routine.

The Jawbone Up retails for $129 and comes in wrist sizes, small, medium, and large and in lots of colors including the popular colors of black and blue. The Jawbone Up is sold in retail stores nationwide including Verizon Wireless retail stores and on the Verizon Wireless website.
