FREE Comerica Java & Jazz Concert Series at Detroit Main Library continues on May 21st with Saxappeal

Free concert series celebrates its 13th season, continues with local musicians

Comerica Bank has partnered with the Detroit Public Library to present the FREE Comerica Java & Jazz: A Coffee House Series for the 13th consecutive year. The concert series brings world-renowned jazz musicians to Detroit for music fans to enjoy free of charge.

“Comerica is proud to present the Java & Jazz series, which provides an arts and culture experience for people of all ages, backgrounds and budgets,” said Patricia McCann, vice president, national civic affairs manager, Comerica Bank. “Detroit has a great history of jazz music dating back to the 1950s, and the city continues to be a driving force in the genre today.”

The FREE concerts will be held on the third Tuesday of every month from March through July at the Detroit Public Library, Friends Auditorium located at 5201 Woodward Ave. Detroit, MI 48202.

The series continues Tuesday, May 21st with Saxappeal.

Saxappeal: The name itself brings a new image to the music arena. The young saxophonist, born and raised in Detroit, has been playing since the age of 7. In fact, this young bird, barely able to stand on his own two feet, let alone fly solo, was pushed out of the nest (musically speaking), after a mere 6 months of playing his horn. Now, the extraordinary musician brings anxiety, joy, love, pain, passion, and so many more sensations to the stage while performing. Comfortably known as 'Sax', he has scoped out his flying territory and has set his sights high.

The complete Comerica Java & Jazz Concert lineup includes:

Straight Ahead
Tuesday, March 19, 6:00 p.m.

The B. Williams Experiment
Tuesday, April 16, 6:00 p.m.

GIVEAWAY: WIN $50 from @GetUncommon for a Unique Tech Gift for Mother's Day - ENDS 5/3 (CLOSED)

My son's artwork is now a 1 of a kind iPad cover, thanks to Uncommon
Want a tech gift that will make Mom cry on Mother's Day?

Like most parents, I have a special stash of all my son's artwork from when he was younger.  Now my son believed that everything he made me was a one of a kind Rembrandt masterpiece - lol :)  But there is no way to keep everything that my son made. So I pared his art collection down to the pieces that hold a special memory in my heart.

my son's Footprints artwork from 2006
my son's Hand Print artwork from 2006
There are two art pieces that were made on the same day when my son was 6 years old that I L-O-V-E.  The first is a painting of my son's footprints (yep, the school dipped his feet in paint and let him have at it on a piece of art paper).  And the second is a painting of my son's hand prints.  I cannot tell you how much I love these art pieces.  I just look at them and trace the hand and foot outlines with my fingers and remember back to when my son was 6 years old - and it just brings tears to my eyes since his feet and hands will never be that size again.

The footprints painting is on my wall at work so that I can look at it everyday. But the hand prints painting has been locked away for years in my special "keepsake stash" that is secured and ready to grab if there is ever a fire in our house.

Tech and Art Combined...
Everyone who reads my blog knows by how much I love tech gadgets, especially my iPad. Well, last week, I finally took my son's hand print painting out of storage so that I could make myself a special one-of-a-kind Mother's Day gift that combines my son's artwork and my iPad.

Uncommom gave me the opportunity to make myself a special Uncommon customized iPad cover just in time for Mother's day by uploading a scanned version of my son's artwork to their website.

For the iPad cover, a large piece of artwork is needed since it has to wrap around the entire iPad - so my son's 12" x 15" hand prints art piece was a perfect size.  If I a wanted to design an iPhone cover I would not have needed such a big painting. Not only does this Uncommon iPad case protect the back cover of the iPad, but it also wraps around the corner edges (see photo above) to protect in case of an accidential drop.

Once I finalized the design, Uncommon delivered my new iPad back cover to me in less than 7 days. Now when I want to be nostalgic, I can put this special cover on my iPad and remember back to when my son was sweet, cute and less than 4 feet tall. And believe me, now that he is a teenager who has grown taller than me, I long for the days when he was 6 years old again :)

This Mother’s Day, you can give Mom a special customized Uncommon iPhone or iPad case featuring a favorite photo, monogram, or personal message—maybe including your own picture holding a sign saying, “I love you. Mom”

So if your Mom likes her gifts to be "Uncommon", get started on her Mother's Day gift at www.getuncommon.com.

TECH REVIEW: TYLT Powerplant Portable Battery

Don't leave home with your tech toys without the TYLT Powerplant....

One of the reasons that I love being a blogger is because I get to try out new products - including lots of new tech products.  If you have read my blog for a while, then you know that I get to demo all the new, cool smartphones as they come onto the market.

From the Motorola Droid Razr HD to the super high tech Samsung Galaxy S3 and Samsung Galaxy Note 2, I have tried out many smartphones during the last year.

And looking forward, I cannot wait to get my hands on the new HTC One and of course the new Samsung Galaxy S4 and the cool new S4 accessories including stylish S4 flip covers and even a cover that let you use the Samsung S4 when the cover is closed - so awesome!

But one thing that I still don't like about today's smartphones is that they can run out of power at the most inopportune times. Lots of smartphones, including the Nexus 4 and Samsung S3, still have "so so" battery life. And even long battery life phones like the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 and Motorola Droid Razr HD can still leave you hanging if you get too use to the long time between charging and forget to charge them before you leave the house.

The TYLT Powerplant can keep its charge if unused for up to 1 year!
So I was very happy when I received for review the TYLT Powerplant portable battery pack.  The TYLT line of portable charging products was the hit of 2013 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Vegas and they have some new, innovative devices that will be released later in the year.

The TYLT Powerplant portable charger is a current best seller which features -

• 5200mAh for plenty of charging power
• Built-in Flex Arm for charging on the go
• Universal USB Socket for charging any USB device
• Rapid charge or charging 2 devices simultaneously
• Micro USB and Apple 30-Pin versions available
• Easy to read LED Battery level Indicator lights
• Automatic shut-off when device is fully charged
• Ability to retain a full single charge for up to one year

Like the name implies, the TYLT Powerplant is a little device that can keep your portable devices fully powered while on the go and away from electric outlets. The Powerplant device measures 3'x1.5'x1.25' and is very light in weight.  It is small enough to keep in your bag or purse and powerful enough to fully charge your devices in a pitch.

The TYLT Powerplant, with its 5200mAh power source, has enough juice to charge two devices - and charge them both at the same time. The Powerplant has a USB plug where you can plug in a device's USB charging cord (see photo above).  It also has a built in flex charging arm that extends out so you can power a second device.

the TYLT Powerplant flex charging arm extends to power my Nexus 4 smartphone
The type of flex charging arm you need determines which model of TYLT Powerplant you will purchase.  The Powerplant comes in 3 models (based on the flex charging arm) -

- 30-PIN model with a charging arm for iPhone 4/4S
- LIGHTNING model with a charging arm for iPhone 5
- MICRO USB model with a charging arm for most other type smartphones and devices (see photo above)

The Powerplant has 4 indicators on the front of the unit that light up green, when you push the button in the left upper corner, to let you know how much charging power is left in the unit.  Four green lights indicate that the unit is fully charged.  One light means it is time to charge the unit by using the included USB power cord.

The really great thing about the TYLT Powerplant is that the unit will stay charged for up to 1 year if you don't use it.  So it is great for those times when you really are in need of an emergency charge for a device.  I use my Nexus 4 smartphone as a portable wifi hotspot for my iPad and laptop, which really drains my smartphone battery. Now when my smartphone battery gets low, the TYLT Powerplant can come to the rescue to keep my smartphone fully charged for hours.

I would sum up my review of the TYLT Powerplant as follows -

Pros -
- Can hold a charge for up to 1 year if not used
- Lightweight
- Can charge two devices at the same time
- Can fully charge two devices on one single charge
- The attached flexible arm allows you to charge a device even when you don't have a separate cord

Cons -
- The price is not cheap!

The Tylt Powerplant charging both my iPad and the Blackberry Z10 smartphone
The TYLT Powerplant retails between $70 and $90 (depending on the type of flex charging arm) and can be purchased on the TYLT online store and in retail stores including Sprint and T-mobile.

Enjoy!

Disclosure: I received complementary TYLT Powerplant to facilitate this review.  All opinons are my own.

Broken City - REVIEW
Broken City - Amazon
DVD release date: 04/30/2013
Theatrical release: 01/18/2013
Language: English
Genre: Crime/Drama
MPAA rating: R
Director: Allen Hughes
Actors: Mark Wahlberg, Russell Crowe, Catherine Zeta-Jones
We last saw Russell Crowe as an honest French policeman, but in Broken City, he's a corrupt and dirty politician - and I have to say, the role definitely suits him. Mark Wahlberg plays an ex-cop that gets used by NYC Mayor Hostetler (Crowe), and decides he's about had enough of him. Catherine Zeta-Jones is Crowe's wife, though they've been emotionally estranged for some time; even so, with the mayoral election around the corner, she must play the doting wife so that he can beat newcome Jack Valliant (Barry Pepper) to remain the mayor. The Silver Linings Playbook - REVIEW
The Sliver Linings Playbook - Amazon
DVD release date: 04/30/2013
Theatrical release: 11/21/2012
Language: English
Genre: Comedy/Drama
MPAA rating: R
Director: David O. Russell
Actors: Jennifer Lawrence, Bradley Cooper, Robert De Niro
Silver Linings Playbook is an interesting movie in that it imitates real life more than we care to admit. It's a "slice of life" movie that can move quite slowly at times, but Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence have great chemistry that make the movie worth seeing. Pat (Cooper) has spent the past eight months in a mental hospital in Baltimore, after an incident involving him catching his wife in the act of cheating with one of her teacher colleagues. The Guilt Trip - REVIEW
The Guilt Trip - Amazon
DVD release date: 04/30/2013
Theatrical release: 12/19/2012
Language: English
Genre: Comedy
MPAA rating: PG-13
Director: Anne Fletcher
Actors: Seth Rogen, Barbra Streisand, Yvonne Strahovski
The Guilt Trip looked like it could be a fun "buddy" movie, only this case with a mom and her son instead of two men or two women, but unfortunately it's not that funny. Barbra Streisand hasn't been in a film since 2010's Little Fockers, but I thought Seth Rogen's reputation for comedy meant the pair would mesh well together, which they did; however, the script holds them back from making this movie a memorable one.
