NOVEMBER 18—THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE (1962) - After President John F. Kennedy was assassinated in November 1963 (fifty years ago this month), star Frank Sinatra allegedly pulled this tale of brainwashing and political assassination from circulation, and it remained largely unseen for many years until the late 1980s, when it was re-discovered and widely proclaimed a classic. Sinatra stars as a former Korean War POW who slowly unravels a Communist assassination plot involving one of his fellow captives. Also starring Laurence Harvey and Angela Lansbury. NOVEMBER 25—MARY POPPINS (1964) - There is only one word that comes close to accurately describing the enchanting Mary Poppins: supercalifragilisticexpialidocious! Julie Andrews won an Oscar as the world's most magically idealized nanny ("practically perfect in every way," and complete with lighter-than-air umbrella), and Dick Van Dyke is her clownishly charming beau, Bert the chimney sweep. Featuring the songs "A Spoonful of Sugar,” "Chim Chim Cher-ee" and the touchingly melancholy "Feed the Birds.” A wonderful way for the entire family to begin the holiday week! (Rated G, 139 min.)
