EDUCATION: New Science Middle School to Open in the Detroit Science Center OPEN HOUSE 1/23 5:30pm

The Detroit Science Center is poised to expand and get a face-lift in the next year and a half through a unique educational partnership that will see a science and math charter middle school located on its site.



OPEN HOUSE
The University Prep Science and Math Middle School will hold an open house from 5:30-6:30 p.m. Wednesday Janaury 23 at the Detroit Science Center for interested parents and students. Enrollment applications are being accepted through Feb. 8 for the 162 slots in sixth and seventh grades. The school eventually will include eighth grade.

>Hands-on, project-based education connected to the Detroit Science Center
>Narrative rather than letter grades
>Student-to-teacher ratio of 18 to 1
>Partnerships through businesses and institutions, including the University of Michigan, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, General Motors Corp. and the Detroit Medical Center
>Chinese and Spanish language and culture
>Guarantee to graduate at least 90 percent of students and send 90 percent to college

How to learn more or enroll a student
• Wednesday: Open house will be held from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Detroit Science Center.
• November-Feb. 8: Applications for the fall will be accepted for students who will be in the sixth or seventh grades.
• March 7: A lottery will be held at the science center if the number of applicants exceeds 162 students.
