GE Lighting is generously donating Energy Smart Longer Life Light Bulbs to my son's school...

We are coming up on that time of the year where gift buying becomes an actual sport for most people. But in the midst of all the buying, I feel it's important not to forget to give back to those in need. And one of my favorite ways to give back this year has been through Champions for Kids.

Champions for Kids is an organization that encourages people to give to children through simple service projects in their community. It does not take a lot of money to make a difference.  All it really takes is a little thought and a giving spirit.

My son's school will get a donation of GE Energy Smart light bulbs & school supplies
One way to help children is to donate to our public schools
School supplies just seem to disappear as fast as they are bought and most times, teachers end of footing the bill to make sure that more supplies are on hand in the classroom.

Last March, my son did a simple service project with Champions for Kids of donating extra school supplies to his school.  And I can tell you that both my son's principal and teachers were overjoyed to receive those supplies because of how tight school budgets are these days and how much basic supplies are needed in the classrooms.  But for me, the real joy came in seeing my son's proud face when he handed over the donation.  Kids are growing up these days with such a sense of entitlement that I am for any type of experience where my son is on the giving end instead of the receiving end.

So when I was given another chance to do another Champions for Kids simple service project, I could not have been happier - especially when that project also teaches classrooms how to save money on energy.

Learn how to $ave Money and Energy with the GE energy smart® Savings Calculator!

Champions for Kids has partnered with GE Lighting to highlight how the simple project of using energy efficient bulbs can save schools and charities lots of energy - and lots of money.

Using the GE energy smart Savings Calculator, anyone can easily calculate how much money can be saved per year and trees can be conserved by switching to energy smart bulbs.  I used the calculator to figure out I could save almost $55 a year by switching out my regular 75 and 100 watt bulbs to energy smart ones.

Metro Detroiters can save even more money on GE energy smart bulbs

While shopping at Walmart for my donation of school supplies and GE energy smart bulbs, I saw signs on all the GE energy smart bulbs that made me stop and smile.  Due to special pricing provided by our local energy company, DTE Energy, all the GE energy smart bulbs were marked even cheaper than the regular retail price.  I had to smile because saving money on top of more savings is how I roll.
