2015 Ford Transit joins the show "American Pickers" and you could WIN one to use #WINTransit

ALL-NEW 2015 FORD TRANSIT JOINS THE CAST OF HISTORY'S HIT SERIES 'AMERICAN PICKERS'

Being the bargain hunter that I am, I am a big fan of the History Channel show "American Pickers." So, as a proud Detroiter and Ford employee, I was very happy to find out that the new 2015 Ford Transit is joining "American Pickers" as stars Mike Wolfe and Frank Fritz travel around the United States, searching remote and rustic locations for classic gems that can be restored and resold.

Wolfe and Fritz will drive a 2015 Transit, a full-size van designed for commercial use, in their mission to find these relics.

'The biggest thing is, when the van is full, then we've got to come home. I'm interested in real estate on wheels,' Wolfe says during the episode airing April 30. 'There were four or five different vehicles I was looking at, and I just keep coming back to the Ford as the better choice.'

"American Pickers" will use the largest Transit model – with a long wheelbase, extended body and high roof – featuring the Ford 3.2-liter Power Stroke five-cylinder diesel engine.  The show is just one example of how Ford Transit serves the needs of small businesses and commercial fleets.

You could WIN the use of a 2015 Transit for Two Weeks...

To celebrate the debut of Transit on 'American Pickers,' Ford is hosting a scavenger hunt that challenges contestants to find one of 10 scale-model Transit vehicles on display in antique shops across the United States.

The 10 winners get the use of a 2015 Transit for two weeks.

The first step is to find one of 10 scale-model Ford Transit vans that will be located in antique shops in 10 metropolitan areas from April 29, 2014, through July 1, 2014.

If you find one of the models, tweet @Ford with a photo of the code on the model and the hashtag #winTransit to be entered into a drawing for a chance to win the use of a Transit van for two weeks.

Since scavenger hunts are all about tracking clues, here’s a hint to get you started! The 10 U.S. cities with the Ford Transit scale models are:

Boston
Chicago
Dallas
Denver
Detroit
Kansas City, Missouri
New York
Orlando, Florida
Phoenix
San Francisco

Blogging & the City 2.0 (Part 7): My FREE Walking Tour of NYC #StumbleUponNYC #blogher12

Me at Rockefeller Center during the StumbleUpon walking tour of NYC
Have you tried touring NYC on foot?

If you have been keeping up with my "Blogging and the City 2.0" series, then you know that one of the reasons that I love going to the BlogHer conference each year is because of the FREE events that bloggers are invited to by many of the brands.

The StumbleUpon team at Hilton Starbucks
One of the events that I was part of was a walking tour of Manhattan sponsored by StumbleUpon, the company that helps you easily discover new and interesting stuff on the Web. About 20 bloggers met at the Starbucks at the Hilton where the team at StumbleUpon treated us all to any drink that we wanted on the menu for FREE - That's the way to start off an event on a good foot.

Our tour guide knew of few things about saving money in NYC
Saving some green in NYC...
Our tour guide was a southern transport (he had definite Southern charm) turned New Yorker who knew all the ins and outs of New York City. Besides showing us the main attractions of the city, he also gave us some money saving tips. One tip involved the museums in NYC - but he swore us to secrecy.

Top of the Rock viewing is cheaper than the Empire State Building
But the tip that I can tell you is that the NBC Studios Observation deck is cheaper ($10 per person) and has a much better view of the city than going to the top of the Empire State building.

I'm glad we were walking downtown and not uptown on our tour...
I also found out on the tour that "Uptown" literally is uphill. So if you are walking uptown in NYC toward Central Park you will be getting some good exercise whether you know it or not.  No wonder New Yorkers are in such good shape.

Rockefeller Center has some beautiful architecture
We made a stop in Rockefeller Center where we learned it was constructed in the middle of the Great Depression and how that one project put tens of thousands of men back to work. Rockefeller Center was one of the biggest gambles John D. Rockefeller made in his career, one that definitely paid off - for him and the City of New York. And if you love to shop, there are plenty of beautiful designer stores in Rockefeller Center that would love to take your money.

Our last stop was at St. Patrick's Cathedral which was undergoing a million dollar restoration. Even surrounded by scaffolding the building is beautiful.

One interesting fact that we learned is that when this church was built, it was out in the middle of no where with nothing around it for miles. Now its totally land locked by hundreds of millions of dollars in high rent buildings.

As we entered, we had to keep our voices down since there were people inside kneeling in afternoon prayer.

Our guide informed us that everything in St. Patrick's Cathedral is handmade and that a generation of artisans literally spent their lives erecting this building as an offering to God. As a looked around at the all the beauty contained within the edifice, I felt this somehow seemed the perfect way to end our tour.

Thanks StumbleUpon!

Only one more to go...
There is now only one post left for me to write in my Blogging and the City 2.0 series. And in that post I will tell you how I got 26.5 pounds in unexpected swag shipped home for only $20. I bet you cannot wait to read that story :)

UPDATE: Blogging & the City 2.0 (Part 8): @Staples & @UPS are your Swag's Best Friends

Enjoy!

Disclosure: StumbleUpon sponsored our complementary walking tour of Manhattan. All my trip photos were taken with the Samsung Galaxy S III smartphone loaned to me for my trip to BlogHer by Verizon Wireless. All opinions are my own.

Blogging & the City 2.0 (Part 3): FREE Disney Movie Screening Party for "The Odd Life of Timothy Green"

Get some tissue and be prepared to cry...

If you have been keeping up with the posts in my new series "Blogging & the City 2.0", then you know I had a wonderful time in New York during the BlogHer Conference. So far I have told you about dancing with Rockettes and exploring New York. But we also had some movie related fun in the Big Apple, courtesy of Disney.

For the third year in a row, Disney invited conference attendees to join them for a complementary advance movie screening. In previous years, we viewed "Secretatiat" and "The Help", which were both wonderful films. And this year, bloggers were invited to New York's Regal Theatre on 42nd Street for an advance screening of "The Odd Life of Timothy Green."

When we entered the theatre, we were all given some tissue - in case we started crying during the movie. Since I knew I would not cry over a movie, I put the tissue in my purse and went to get my complementary popcorn and soda. But as the movie progressed, guess what I had to dig out of my purse?

Cindy and Jim Green (Jennifer Garner and Joel Edgerton) are a young married couple who live in a small town called Stanleyville. Cindy and Jim desperately want to have a child. But as the movie opens, their doctor is telling them that he has done everything possible, but there is no way the couple can conceive.

That night, they are so sad that Jim, on a spur of the moment, decides they should write down everything they would want in a perfect child - happy, thoughtful, truthful, artistic, musical, a green-thumb, athletic. They then put all the slips of paper into a box that they bury in the backyard garden.

That night a storm pops up, but the storm is only over their house. Then lightening strikes and Jim goes outside to see what happened. When he returns to the house, a dirt covered, naked, 10 year old boy is in the couple's bedroom - a boy that says his name is Timothy (the name they picked out if they ever had a son).

So what would do you do if your dreams unexpectedly came true? Why you clean up the child and tell everyone that you adopted a son, of course. Only thing is - Timothy (played by CJ Adams) is a little different - besides the fact that he sprang up out of the garden. You see, Timothy has leaves growing out of his ankles. Leaves, that his now happy parents try to hide (with a pair of green socks) from the rest of their small community, along with some other "quirks" of their son which people start to think are a tad strange.

Although the story is a little odd, the movie draws you in because, no matter how people become parents, we all seem to make some really bad mistakes in raising our kids. This movie shows that there are no perfect kids and there are no perfect parents. Although Cindy and Jim really, really wanted to be parents, they still end up making every bad decision in the book - from trying to make they son into something that he is not, to letting their siblings and parents influence how they raise their child.

This is one of those feel good movies that is beautiful to watch and will have you tearing up at the end. But although Disney made a good, clean family movie, I know my 12 year old son will not be able to sit through it because this is no action thriller. It's really a quirky slice of life movie - the kind which my son has zero interest. So I was happy that I saw it at BlogHer with a group of women - all who were tearing up like me.

Me at the Disney Party on the roof deck of the Yotel New York - BlogHer12
Partying with Disney over the Big Apple...
After the screening, Disney held a reception on the roof of the ultra modern Yotel New York on 10th Avenue. Bloggers were everywhere, mingling and wearing our gifts from Disney - Fairy Wings (to celebrate the up coming Disney release of Tinker Bell's new movie - Secret of the Wings) and Green Socks - a la Timothy Green.

It was a beautiful night for a party with a perfect view of New York. Everyone was happy and feeling good - I think the good vibes must have carried over from the movie.

So if you like your movies with an interesting (if not odd) plot, beautiful cinematography, and a story that is a tear jerker, check out "The Odd Life of Timothy Green" which opens in theaters everywhere today, Wednesday, August 15, 2012.

And watch for the next post in my Blogging in the City 2.0 series to follow more of my adventures in the Big Apple during BlogHer12.

CONTEST
When Timothy Green unexpectedly shows up in Stanleyville, he changes the lives of the people he meets forever. Inspired by that, Disney has created an application (http://di.sn/MagicalMoments) that allows fans of the movie to upload and share photos of magical moments from their own lives. When a photo is submitted, it becomes a part of the Disney Magical Moments Photo Collage.

In addition, you can use the application to enter a sweepstakes to win the grand prize - a Frigidaire Affinity Washer and Dryer! Also, 25 first-place winners will receive a promo card for a FREE photo book from Shutterfly!

Enjoy!

Disclosure: Disney invited me to a complementary movie screening that included FREE food and also an after party. I also received complementary movie related items. Blogging & the City 2.0 (Part 2): Dancing with the Radio City Rockettes for FREE at #BlogHer12

Our Rockette Instructors
Showgirls in the making ...

If you read my Blogging and the City 2.0 (part 1) post from yesterday, then you know that I recently returned from a trip to New York City to attend BlogHer, "the" largest women's blogging conference.

One of the things that I love about going to BlogHer is that the organizers partner with sponsors to not only keep the conference fee down to only $199, but also to put on FREE one-of-a-kind events for small groups of conference attendees. These events are filled on a first come, first serve basis.  Last year at BlogHer11, I attended a sponsored event where I met Bob Harper from The Biggest Loser.

This year, Pfizer Consumer Healthcare sponsored a special event at BlogHer12 involving the Radio City Rockettes. About 100 conference attendees got to take a private dance lesson taught by the Rockettes and I and Laura from LauraInTheMotorCity were in the house - SWEET!

I learned that the Rockettes teach paid 3 hour dance classes that I am sure cost big bucks.  So I was very glad to have a FREE one hour lesson to find out more about the basic Rockette dance moves, including their signature kick line.

When Laura and I arrived at the side entrance to Radio City Music Hall, we had to go through two security checkpoints and show picture ID to be verified as invited guests - good to know that they keep the Rockettes so safe.

We were broken up into two groups of 50, and each group was put into a separate dance studio with two Rockette instructors.  Everyone was so giddy with excitement that we were all acting like little girls.  We were put into two lines with the taller women in the middle and the shorter women (including me) on the ends.  This is how the real Rockettes line up for their dances.

We were each given a number that corresponded with a number on the floor in front of us.  That number is how we figured out how to line up and now much space to keep between each other.

The first move that we were taught was how to walk like a toy solider.  Everyone knows about the Rockettes' Toy Solider dance routine, but I can tell you that it looks a lot easier that it really is.  We had to keep our legs perfectly straight and squeeze our butts while keeping time with the music in perfect line formations - NOT EASY!

We next were taught the famous Rockettes Kick Line.  One move that you probably don't notice is that each girl has an arm behind the girl on either side of her at special positions. But guess what? You are not allowed to actually touch the other girls.  Your arms and hands must be held an inch or two away from their backs in mid air - HARD!. After we got that move down, we went on to how to do the high kicks on queue. Then the the music was added and the heat was on.

Yeah, we all need to keep our day jobs because we will never get a job as a Rockette in real life, but it was a lot of fun.  At the end of the kick line routine, we all had to do a showgirl pose in a slight bent poster with our hands crossed over our knees and then end the song with our hands in the air - it was too cute.

After the class was over, there was a question and answer period where we learned that our Rockette instructors are very tall (you have to be at least 5'6" to be a Rockette), eat like athletes (no squirrel food for these beauties), and compete in marathons in addition to all the dancing that they do in their regular jobs.

On our way out of Radio City Music Hall, Pfizer Consumer Healthcare treated everyone to smoothies which we all sucked down with abandon - dancing makes you hungry.

So if you ever get a chance to go to BlogHer, make sure you signup for one of the special sponsored events. I cannot think of anywhere else except at BlogHer that I would be in "the" Radio City Music Hall taking a FREE private lesson with a Rockette. These are the kind of moments that we always remember.

Watch for my next post in my Blogging in the City 2.0 series to follow more of my adventures in the Big Apple at BlogHer12.

Blogging & the City 2.0 (Part 1): My Adventures in New York City for #BlogHer12

I finally used the New York City Subway...cheapest way to get around
My photo of Times Square - It's busy - day and night...
Doing New York City, BlogHer Style....

I recently returned from visting New York City to attend my third BlogHer Conference. BlogHer is the largest female blogging conference in the world with reportedly almost 5000 women attending this year. This is the second time that the conference has been in New York City (hence the post name Blogging & the City 2.0) and again my partner in crime and travel buddy for this conference trip was Laura from LauraInTheMotorCity.com.

BlogHer is still a great value for the Money...
I have saved lots of money over the years on my vacations by traveling as part of business conferences and BlogHer is one of the cheapest blogging conferences to attend. The conference fee has remained only $199 since the conference inception and that fee includes all sessions, daily breakfast and lunch and nightly parties. The price also includes the admittance to the Vendor Hall where brands and bloggers connect and massive swag is available for all.

The BlogHer organizers always negotiate very reasonable hotel rates for attendees. This year's conference was held at the Hilton and attendees only paid $229 per night, which is great for a 4 star hotel in downtown Manhattan only two blocks from Radio City Music Hall.  The Hilton did have its challenges, including slow elevators and less than optimal air conditioners, but overall it was a nice hotel.

Thanks to BlogHer, I got to dance with The Radio City Rockettes! - FOR FREE!!!
Lots to do in the Big Apple..
I had a really great time this year at BlogHer and had some extraordinary experiences in New York including Dancing with the Radio City Rockettes and dining at the famed New York Ruth's Chris Steak House as part of the Glamorous Moms Luncheon hosted by metro Detroit's own Shannon Lazovskin of the Glamorous Moms blog. I will be sharing stories about all those adventures in future posts. But in this post I just want to share some of Laura's and my New York adventures during our first day in the city, before the conference started.

During our 2010 trip to New York for BlogHer10, Laura and I played it pretty safe and stayed close to the hotel and only took cabs to get around. But this year, we decided to venture out more and also try out the New York city subway system.

Pazza Notte - still YUMMY!
But before we started our adventures, we decided to have lunch at an old favorite - Pazza Notte. We discovered this Italian restaurant on our trip to BlogHer10.  The food is wonderful and the location is only 2 blocks from the Hilton. In 2010, the food was a real bargain since we paid only $19 for a 3 course lunch called "The Recession Special". Although the price for the same meal had increased to $25, our stomachs still could not resist eating there again and the Pollo Alla Cajun was just as wonderful as I remembered.

New York City Subways - Cheap but Hot as Hell!
After lunch we decided to take the subway to visit Ground Zero. This was both Laura's and my first time using the subway so we really did not know what to expect, other than it being the cheapest way to get around New York City.

Laura was able to figure out the subway system using Google Maps on her iPhone so getting around was not an issue. But what was an issue was the temperature of the subway platform. Since the subway is underground, I of course thought it would be cool. But the temperature was off the charts HOT and HUMID, two things that I don't do well. So I was very glad when the train finally came to take us to Ground Zero.

Century 21- A Discount Designer Shopping Mecca
When we exited the subway, we were in the financial district which is also home to one of the best designer bargain stores in New York City - Century 21. I had only seen Century 21 on cable television shows like "The Look for Less" so I knew I had to go in and at least walk around.

The inside of the store looks like a Walmart (no thrills), but with all designer clothing at cheap prices. There was so much merchandise on so many floors that it was hard to know where to start. I am not a fan of organized chaos, but the prices in this store are hard to beat. If you are a bargainista visiting New York, this store is a must stop.

Ground Zero - Lovely and Sobering...
Getting to Ground Zero takes some patience. First you have to get a FREE vistor pass online at http://www.911memorial.org/visitor-passes and pick the date and time that you want to visit. When you get to the gate, you have to have your Visitor Pass out at all times since you will go through multiple police check points, including a bag search. But the experience it worth the process.

My photo of the 9/11 memorial - The fountain is beautiful
Laura at the memorial wall
The designers of the 9/11 memorial have done a wonderful job. The memorial is both lovely, with the beautiful fountains, and sobering with the names of the victims forever etched in granite on the site of both World Trade towers.

As we stood there watching the fountains, Laura and I remembered where we each were when the towers fell.  Others around us were having similar conversations and touching the engraved names with reverence. I am very glad that we made the time to finally visit.

Police are Everywhere in Manhattan...
One thing that I noticed while traveling in Manhattan is the heavy police presence. There are pairs of police officers in all the tourist areas, seemingly on every other block - day and night, regardless of the weather. During one of our city tours later in our trip, the tour guide told us that Manhattan is now one of the safest places to walk day and night because of all the police. I have to say that I felt really safe especially as Laura and I walked from the Financial district to our next stop in Tribeca.

Aire Ancient Bath House...HEAVEN!!!
Before we left for BlogHer12, Laura sent me an email asking if I wanted to be part of her review of a business in Tribeca called Aire Ancient Baths. I am usually all in for a new experience that I don't have to pay for, but the term "ancient baths" brought up visions of ancient Romans sitting around naked in steam rooms - not pretty. But I figured I had nothing to lose by going. I am happy to say that my initial thoughts were way off base.

The Aire Lobby - Photo Credit: Aire Ancient Baths
As we entered Aire Ancient Baths, we were greeted in a lobby that contained comfy couches and a wall of relaxing scented candles. After we filled out our forms, we walked to the women's locker room to change into our swimsuits. We actually did not have to bring our own swimsuits since Aire provides everything from swimsuits to robes to bath shoes, all included in the price of service.

The Baths - Photo Credit: Aire Ancient Baths
The baths are located on the lower level and are pools of water of varying temperatures ranging from hot to cold, plus steam and massage rooms. Keeping on our bath shoes was extremely important since the floors are made of marble. We started in the salt water pool which was my favorite of all them all. Due to the salt in the water, it is impossible to sink in this pool so you just lay on top of the water. After the salt pool, we were told to go into the steam room so the salt would be absorbed into our skin. My skin ended up feeling like a soft baby's bottom.

We next went into the massage room for our 15 minute massages. Since the walk to Tribeca was a long one, the massages were wonderful, especially of my feet. After only 10 minutes, I felt like a new woman.

We tried some of the other pools and Laura even tried the 50 degree cold pool - brave woman.  The whole experience was wonderful and I cannot thank Laura enough for inviting me to tag along. The staff even dried our swimsuits for us while we showered. Click here to read Laura's full review of Aire Ancient Baths including prices.

Street Vendor Eating for only $5....
After our great time at Aire Ancient Bath House, Laura and I took the subway back toward our hotel and started thinking about what we could have for dinner. We didn't want to spend lots of money on food in New York. Since most of our meals were included as part of the conference, we only had to cover a few meals on our own. Walking back to the hotel, we found a Subway where we bought a meal for a decent price. But we also found during our trip that licensed street vendors cooked some great meals (including huge gyros and other sandwiches) that start at only $5 total. These vendors ended up saving us lots of money on food.

Me in Rockefeller Center, BlogHer12
Lots more adventures to come...
Our first day in New York was filled with great experiences, as was the remainder of our trip.

So stay tuned for my next posts in my series "Blogging & the City 2.0" where I will tell you about my New York Walking Tour sponsored by StumbleUpon, the "Christmas in July" event sponsored by Hallmark (which will include a GIVEAWAY), the Verizon Luncheon featuring their domestic violence charity - Hopeline, dancing with the Radio City Rockettes sponsored by Pfizer Consumer Healthcare, working out on the new CoreBody Reformer sponsored by Bowflex, attending the Glamorous Moms Luncheon sponsored by Detroit Blogger Shannon Lazovskin and much more...
