Youth Savings Account at Telcom Credit Union

Our youth savings plan is called Soccer Savings. This unique youth savings account matches the total interest earned at the age of 18.
At Telcom Credit Union we want to promote the importance of saving money for the future. We have designed a savings account for kids which will reward and help them save money. You can help your child develop good savings habits early by opening a Soccer Savings account for them.

Deposit $5.00 in their savings account to establish them as a member at Telcom Credit Union.

Deposit a minimum of $1.00 to open their Soccer Savings account.
The Soccer Savings account earns a premium interest rate equal to our Money Management rate, currently 2.0% annual percentage yield (APY), and is subject to change annually on December 31. Quarterly Soccer Savings statements will reflect the balance and the amount of interest earned. At age 18, Telcom Credit Union will match up to $500.00 of the total interest already paid during the term of the Soccer Savings. All matching contributions will automatically be deposited into a two-year Soccer Savings Reward Certificate of Deposit to earn even more money, and to teach your child to save for the future. As a bonus, you may add additional funds to the Reward Certificate.

We offer many more benefits as your child grows. At age 16, they can open a checking account with an ATM card or Visa debit card with a qualified parent co-signer. You can also help to teach them financial responsibility with a co-signed Visa credit card.

Then at the age of 18, if your child attends school full-time, they can enroll in our College Account Program to avoid monthly low balance fees. So get your child started today, with a Telcom Soccer Savings account, and help them learn to sock it away.

EDUCATION: New Science Middle School to Open in the Detroit Science Center OPEN HOUSE 1/23 5:30pm

The Detroit Science Center is poised to expand and get a face-lift in the next year and a half through a unique educational partnership that will see a science and math charter middle school located on its site.

The University Prep Science and Math Middle School will hold an open house from 5:30-6:30 p.m. Wednesday Janaury 23 at the Detroit Science Center for interested parents and students. Enrollment applications are being accepted through Feb. 8 for the 162 slots in sixth and seventh grades. The school eventually will include eighth grade.

Federal bureau will fill full-time, temp positions throughout the year as it ramps up 2010 count.

For a couple of years, the U.S. Census Bureau has brought doses of bad news to Michigan, chronicling the decline in jobs and people. Starting this month, the bureau will offer a ray of hope. In small groups at first, and later by the hundreds, the bureau will add as many as 15,000 temporary workers to its Michigan payroll as it ramps up for the 2010 decennial survey.

The bureau will open its "regional census center" in the Stroh River Place off Joseph Campau Street near Chene Park on Thursday, when a skeleton crew of five or six will move in as they plan for the count that determines everything from the state's number of seats in Congress to amounts of federal funding. Over the next year, the bureau will hire up to 160 full-time workers for the regional center.

The opening of the 27,000-square-foot regional center presages the hiring of hundreds more later this year in Detroit, Flint, Lansing and Grand Rapids. Those offices will act as the headquarters for the compilation of mailing lists used to send the 2010 census form to every resident in the country. In October 2009, census offices will be opened in each of the state's 15 Congressional districts, and as many as 1,000 will work out of each office.
In many districts, the number will be lower if the percentage of properly returned census forms is high. The canvass workers, called enumerators, will go to every address where a form wasn't returned.

Specific pay rates for the workers haven't been established yet. But Kountz estimated that workers will be paid between $24,000 and $70,000, depending on the type of work they will do. Most will not receive benefits, though, said Tom Chodzko, assistant regional manager.

The BDPA-Detroit chapter has provided training for this program for over 18 years resulting in 5 national championships including several regional championships. The Detroit team during this period has an average of placing in the top 5 nationally every year.

'Biz Kid$' 5 p.m. Tuesdays on PBS, Channel 56

Americans are saving money at the lowest rate since the Great Depression, and many families habitually rely on payday lending or credit cards to help make ends meet, often paying high interest rates and perpetuating a cycle of debt from which it can be difficult to recover.
As state legislatures and the U.S. Congress discuss the importance of financial literacy -- or the lack of it -- in the everyday lives of most Americans, a select few have taken steps to reverse the troubling trends by providing money management tips to young people.
And a new show hopes to do the same.

"Biz Kid$," a fun, 30-minute PBS production that debuts today on WTVS-TV (Channel 56), promises to entertain and teach millions of kids how to make and manage money, while inspiring them to pursue their dreams. The series is the result of a three-way partnership between Junior Achievement, the Emmy award-winning producers of "Bill Nye the Science Guy" and America's Credit Unions.

The first installment will feature guests giving advice on money and entrepreneurship, including a skateboard designer, rap producer and philanthropist who started a fund-raiser for a hospital.
"When the 71 million young people who make up Generation Y begin driving America's economy, it will be too late to address with them the need for financial literacy. However, it's not too late to start with America's youth," said Jamie Hammond, the executive producer behind "Biz Kid$."

"'Biz Kid$' will be one of the most effective tools for engaging kids to care about their financial futures," Hammond added.
