THE ARTS

The award-winning Juried Fine Art Show is one of the nation’s premier art shows. Competition was fierce this year, with more than 400 artists applying for the opportunity to be in the show. Quality artists from across the continent are vying for one or more of the cash awards totaling $7,500. The show will display artwork of different mediums, including ceramics, fabric and fiber, leather, painting, photography, sculpture, wood, digital art, drawings, graphics and printmaking, glass, jewelry and metal. Festival patrons have the opportunity to enjoy the art and peruse the works of these talented artists at more than 140 booth spaces. See Arts press release for complete list of artists.

KROGER BRINGS VALUE BACK WITH FREE FAMILY-FRIENDLY FUN
Ford Arts, Beats & Eats has long been recognized for the quality and quantity of its family-friendly entertainment. Among the high points will be the Kids Zone, guaranteed to attract youngsters with fun, interactive programming throughout the four days of the festival. This year, the entire family can enjoy the Kroger Arts & Scraps tent, which will be free to all guests throughout the four days of the event. Utilizing recycled materials from around Detroit kids and adults can create a musical instrument and learn about unusual food, as well as invent the perfect food, play a junk xylophone or build a giant marble run and see how many sounds can be created on the musical ramp.

The Oakland County Kids Stage will feature an exciting lineup of family-friendly performances. Bringing smiles, laughter, amazement and awe to youngsters’ faces will be ventriloquists, music, magical tricks, clown acts, story telling and puppet shows. Among the lineup are many favorites is Rosco the Clown, Punch & Judy Puppet Show, Chautauqua Express Concert, Pure Imagination Magic Show, Cool Tricks & Funny Stuff, Detroit Science Center demonstrations, Kevin Devine Music Show, Randyl Lee Magic, Juggler Tim Salisbury and 3 Little Pigs Puppet Show.

Mid America Shows is providing this year’s Kiddie Carnival, which brings quintessential summer-time fun with ten rides geared just for families. Kids can enjoy the thrills from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday through Sunday and 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Monday in the Sherman lot at the north end of the festival and in the Royal Oak city lot, which borders 6th and Main streets. Enjoy the sights, sounds and all around fun with this year’s exhilarating rides at the Kiddie Carnival.

The Detroit Red Wings Hockey Skills Challenges brings an interactive hockey zone to the festival with a chance to win some big prizes. Kids can test their skills at the Electronic Top Shop Net, hockey tables and video games to win player autographed merchandise as well as tickets to the upcoming Red Wings hockey season.

DIA PARTNERSHIP
The Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA), the area’s cultural beacon for more than a century, is returning to Ford Arts, Beats & Eats with two inspiring features: DIA Away “Think Like an Artist” and Artist Demonstrations.

DIA Away is a free, mobile interactive classroom for students and a creative exploration space for people of all ages and will add an educational hands-on art experience to the festival. The fully furnished, vibrantly designed 53’ double-expandable trailer gives participants the opportunity to discover some of the ways artists think and then try out creative thinking skills at digital and hands-on stations.

DIA Away is one of the many ways the DIA shares its world-renowned collection and educational resources outside its museum walls and was created in consultation with area educators, community members and DIA visitors, and in collaboration with MRA experiential tours and equipment.

In addition, the DIA will be the presenting sponsor of Artist Demonstrations at the festival as an extension of its “Think Like An Artist” exhibit. The DIA will present four art demonstrations each day of the festival. In each demonstration, a festival visual artist will present a piece they are working on, explain how it is made and talk about their techniques. Each demonstration is between 15 and 30 minutes and will be located in a tented seating area at 7th Street and Washington Avenue.

METERS MADE BEAUTIFUL
In collaboration between the festival and Royal Oak Commission for the Arts, a new program is being introduced to Royal Oak, Meters Made Beautiful presented by Ford. The beatification project is the first of its kind in Michigan, which showcases selected artists’ work on 100 parking meters inside the festival footprint. The artwork will be on display for many years following the annual event, which encourages and supports arts and culture in the city of Royal Oak.

THE BEATS

In keeping with tradition, Ford Arts, Beats & Eats is bringing new and returning musical acts to nine performance stages, including 200 national and local bands. Festivalgoers are sure to find their favorite style and sound.

This year’s lineup of national acts playing on The Michigan Lottery National Stage is headlined by Joan Jett & The Blackhearts, Gavin DeGraw, Our Lady Peace and Cole Swindell, and includes other top touring acts including Three Dog Night, Buckcherry, The Ohio Players Jr. Jr., Laith Al-Saadi, a 2016 finalist on NBC’s The Voice, and more.

Detroit’s best local bands will be featured on six additional music stages, with a quality mix and variety of music that is unmatched by any other festival, including performances by Your Generation in Concert and Flint Eastwood. The local stages include Country Stage, Alternative Rock Stage, Rock Stage, R&B and Jazz Stage, Acoustic Stage, and International Stage. Top local talent featured this year includes Nina & the Buffalo Riders, Last Call, Acoustic Madness and Stone Clover. See Beats press release for complete list of musical acts.

THE EATS

Holding with tradition, a tempting roster of restaurants across just about every food genre will tantalize and satisfy visitors all weekend long at this year’s Ford Arts, Beats & Eats. Restaurants, caterers and food-related attractions will showcase their unique take on the culinary arts to offer a little bit of something for everyone, from healthy dishes to special cultural cuisine. There will be seafood offerings, summer snacks and sweets and treats for all to enjoy.

Leading the lineup of new restaurants is La Dulce, located in downtown Royal Oak, serving delicious tapas and Woodpile BBQ Shack, with some of the most authentic smoked meats and sides. Cafè Sushi, an Asian fusion restaurant located in Troy, is also new to the 2016 lineup, and will feature fresh fish and fresh takes on Asian cuisine. See Eats press release for complete list of restaurants.

AND MORE

This year Ford Arts, Beats & Eats will provide 1,800 parking spots for cyclers in the Bike Corral by Beaumont Health System. There will be two lots, located at Washington Avenue just south of Lincoln (southbound lane) and Washington Avenue near Second Avenue (southbound lane) providing bikers a healthy alternative to get to this year’s festival. The Corral hours are 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday through Sunday and 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday.

Priority Health will once again sponsor Healthy Options for the 2016 festival. Attendees just need to look for the Healthy Option logo on each food vendor sign for healthy items that are on the menus of participating local restaurants and eateries.

INTERACTIVE FORD DISPLAYS
Stop by the many interactive Ford display areas throughout the festival to check out the latest Ford vehicles and technology and test-drive an all-new Ford vehicle. The attractions offer skill competitions, technology demonstrations and the opportunity to win exciting prizes, including a new Ford vehicle of your choice up to $30,000. Each adult that registers at any of the Ford display locations will also automatically receive $750 bonus cash towards any Ford vehicle.

FREE 34th Annual African World Festival 8/19 - 8/21 on grounds of Charles Wright Museum of American American History

3-day, FREE festival features musical performances, family activities, hundreds of vendors, traditional crafts and cuisine...

The Charles H. Wright Museum of African History proudly presents the 34th Annual African World Festival (AWF). AWF is Detroit’s largest ethnic festival attracting over 150,000 visitors annually. This year’s festival takes place on the grounds of The Wright Museum located in Midtown Detroit’s Cultural Center, Friday, August 19, Saturday, August 20 and Sunday, August 21, 2016. Hours are 11 AM – 11 PM Friday through Sunday.

Having started in 1983, African World Festival presents an assortment of art, music and history to local, national and international audiences. The 34-year-old festival is a celebration of the richness, diversity and worldwide influence of African culture through performances, cuisine and fashion. AWF is The Wright Museum’s single largest cultural and educational community outreach event. This year’s festival is sponsored by Ford Motor Company, Heritage Works, Pepsi, Oakland University, and iHeart Media (WMXD Mix 92.3 and FM 98 WJLB).

FREE and open to the public, AWF features three days of family activities, live entertainment and the 4th Annual Knight Detroit Book Fair in the Watoto Children’s Village, where every child receives a free book courtesy of the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. Additional highlights include craft vendors, ethnic cuisine, historic area walking tours, and more.

The Wright is offering a special museum admission price of only $5 during the festival to see all of the museum’s exhibitions - including its core attraction, the 22-gallery And Still We Rise: Our Journey Through African American History & Culture exhibit, and, in accord with the summer games in Rio, In The Paint: Art, Athletics & the Spirit of the Games, an art exhibition featuring portrayals of African American athletic achievement in international sporting competitions. The museum will also have extended hours during the festival, remaining open until 7 PM each evening.

Festival performances will include local, national, and international artists providing non-stop entertainment throughout the weekend. This year’s entertainment highlights include a Mix 92.3 FM After Work Affair featuring Al B. Sure! (Friday, August 19 from 5:30 - 8:30 PM), Karen Clark Sheard & Dorinda Clark Cole (Saturday, August 20 at 6:30 PM), Detroit Rocks the Runway Fashion Show featuring 12 outstanding designers and musical guest Collective Peace (Saturday, August 20 at 9 PM), and an AfroPop Special featuring performers from Cameroon, Sierra Leone and Nigeria (Sunday, August 21 at 9 PM). Festival updates including the full lineup of performers will be posted online at awfdetroit.com.

In addition to music, visual arts demonstrations and workshops, AWF presents an international marketplace featuring 150 vendors with merchandise made and inspired by African cultures. The Food Village located on Brush at Farnsworth Street will be filled with the aromas of delicious African, Caribbean and African American cuisine.

Festival-goers looking for something special to purchase will have the opportunity to buy the new American Girl BeForever doll Melody Ellison in the museum store beginning Saturday, August 20 at 8 PM. The Wright is one of the first locations to sell this highly anticipated, African-American and Detroit-themed doll, which will remain available in the museum store through Sunday, September 4 while supplies last. Museum president & CEO Juanita Moore was one of several prominent advisors on a committee to insure the historical accuracy and cultural authenticity of the doll and its representation of a young African American girl growing up in 1960s Detroit.

Finally, an innovative aspect of this year’s festival is its focus on going “green.” Several initiatives have been undertaken to reduce the ecological impact of AWF and use it as a platform for encouraging sustainable practices among its attendees. In addition to recycling stations, the festival will feature a bike valet, complimentary solar powered cell phone charging stations, community gardening demonstrations, and information on an array of sustainable living practices.

For additional information regarding the 34th annual African World Festival,  visit awfdetroit.com.

FREE September Detroit Symphony Orchestra (DSO) Community Concerts in Detroit, Fair Haven, Taylor, Waterford - RSVP

Free seat reservations available now for September DSO community performances...

Four Southeast Michigan venues have been selected for free Detroit Symphony Orchestra (DSO) concerts presented by DTE Energy Foundation. The concert locations were nominated and voted on by the public in the #DTEPowersDSO venue competition.

The four free performances will take place Fri., Sep. 23, at Greater Grace Temple in Detroit and at Heinz C. Prechter Performing Arts Center in Taylor; on Sat., Sep. 24 at Waterford Mott High School Performing Arts Center in Waterford; and Sun., Sep. 25, 2016 at Anchor Bay High School in Fair Haven, conducted by DSO Assistant Conductor and Phillip and Lauren Fisher Community Ambassador Michelle Merrill.

This is the sixth consecutive year that DTE Energy Foundation has powered free DSO community concerts.

Pop-up performances by DSO musicians at Milford Farmer’s Market, Kuhnhenn Brewing Company, and the Palmer Park Art Fair helped to solicit nominations for the free performances. The #DTEPowersDSO venue competition puts the power in the hands of Metro Detroiters and takes the superb artistry of the DSO beyond the walls of Orchestra Hall.

For more than four weeks the DSO received venue nominations from all corners of the region, and the final decisions were made with the help of our most important partners—community members.

Waterford Mott High School Performing Arts Center was selected as an alternative venue to Clarkston High School, which received a high number of votes but will unfortunately be unable to host a DSO performance due to a scheduling conflict. The DSO chose Waterford Mott to ensure that those who voted for Clarkston High School will still have access to a community concert in their area.

For 50 years the DTE Energy Foundation has supported the DSO and its cultural programs, and the Foundation is proud to help the Orchestra bring music to diverse and underserved communities throughout Southeast Michigan. On May 23, 2016, DTE Energy Foundation awarded the DSO a historic $2 million gift that includes a three-year commitment to continue offering these free community concerts each fall. It also includes endowment support for music education, senior citizen outreach and additional community engagement programming.

“The arts awaken curiosity, creativity and the desire for knowledge—things that DTE Energy believes empower both people and the communities they live in,” said Faye Nelson, Vice President at DTE Energy and board chair and President of the DTE Energy Foundation. “We are proud to play such a pivotal role in making these community concerts happen year after year, and ensuring they will continue for years to come. Through this unique opportunity, our friends, children, and neighbors across the region can experience the joy and beauty of listening to great music made by such talented musicians."

“Performing throughout metro Detroit is the perfect way to kick off the concert season each year, and the Foundation’s generous partnership makes it possible for us to reach ever increasing and diverse audiences,” said Anne Parsons, DSO President & CEO. “We are honored to make ourselves accessible to the very community that sustains us through work that is rewarding to our collective well-being.”

While the concerts are free admission, a seat reservation is required for entry. Seats can be reserved now at dso.org, by phone at (313) 576-5111, or in person at the Max M. and Marjorie S. Fisher Music Center Box Office (3711 Woodward Ave., Detroit).

The Box Office is open for both phone and in-person reservations Monday through Friday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. EDT.

All concerts are general admission (no seats will be assigned), and all seating is first-come, first-served.
