Pewabic Pottery to host FREE 109th birthday celebration 3/10 with Demos, Food and Giveaways

FREE event to feature birthday cake, refreshments and tours highlighting restored historic chimney and new history tour plaques...

Historic Pewabic Pottery will celebrate 109 years next Saturday, March 10 with a special birthday party event from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The public is invited to attend the FREE celebration, which will feature complimentary guided tours, demonstrations, birthday cake, refreshments and hourly door prize giveaways.

Guided tours will begin at 11 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 2 p.m. and will feature a first look at the nonprofit’s new history tour plaques, which were purchased through funding from the Michigan Humanities Council and a National Endowment for the Humanities grant. In addition, guests will have a chance to see the pottery’s recently restored 105-year-old historic chimney.

 “This is going to be another very exciting year for Pewabic and we invite the public to come celebrate our past, present and future with us,” said Terese Ireland, executive director of Pewabic Pottery. “Pewabic has been a Detroit staple for more than a century and we’re looking forward to many more years of continued success.”

Guests will also have an opportunity to purchase Pewabic Society Memberships. Members will receive additional discount pricing on select Pewabic vases during the event. In addition, Pewabic members receive a double discount of up to 20 percent on all Pewabic wares throughout the month of March. Memberships start at $30 for an associate membership (under 30 years), $40 for an individual and $60 for family/friends.

 Pewabic Pottery is a non-profit arts and cultural organization and National Historic Landmark which is dedicated to engaging people of all ages in learning experiences with contemporary ceramic art and artists while preserving its historic legacy.

Pewabic is a historic working pottery which is open to the public year round and offers classes, workshops and tours to children and adults. Pewabic creates giftware, pottery and architectural tile, showcases more than 80 ceramic artists in its galleries, and operates a museum store that features pottery and gift tile made on-site. Visitors are welcome, free of charge, Monday - Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 4 p.m.
