MOVIE REVIEW: Faster

Guest Blogger Liz Parker is back from seeing "Faster" staring Dwayne Johnson. Is "The Rock" now the king of the action film or should he just go back to kiddie comedies?  Let's read what Liz thinks...

Throughout most of this film, I was contemplating giving it a "Maybe" rating, because although it had a lot of nice cars and "shoot 'em up" scenes in it, overall it was just a so-so movie. The ending, however, changed all that, and immediately made me reconsider my decision.

Driver (Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, "The Other Guys") has just completed a ten-year jail sentence and he's looking to kill the men who left him for dead and killed the rest of his bank robbery crew. What he doesn't know, however is that Killer (Oliver Jackson-Cohen, "Going the Distance") has been hired by one of these men to kill him. In addition, after Driver starts murdering people, Cop (Billy Bob Thornton, "The Smell of Success") is hot on his tail, trying to catch him. The three characters won't come face-to-face with each other until the end of the film, but when they do, the result is epic.

It was nice to see Dwayne Johnson return to an action film (kids' movies like "Tooth Fairy" just weren't cutting it for me), although his actions speak louder than his words in this movie, as he doesn't have much dialogue. Billy Bob does an excellent job, and so does the handsome Jackson-Cohen, who I had thought I had never seen before but who was actually in the recent film "Going the Distance." The supporting actors included Carla Gugino (TV's "Entourage") as a fellow cop who works with Thornton's character, and Maggie Grace ("Knight and Day") as Killer's girlfriend who becomes his wife.

Yes, see this film, because the ending definitely threw me for a loop. I vaguely remember reading in another review online that "Faster" had a twist ending, but I don't think I put much stock in it at the time; the ending was something I definitely didn't see coming, however, though now that I think back upon the movie as a whole, there were definitely clues sprinkled throughout. "Faster" is not going to win any Oscars, but if you're looking for a good "shoot 'em up" movie that actually does have a plot, then you will enjoy it - it's very "Kill Bill"-esque and it makes the most of its 98-minute runtime.
"Faster" is currently playing in theaters.
