Blogger Challenger yields a special $5000 check for local domestic violence shelter

On Friday, December 3rd, I attended a very special check presentation ceremony for a local charity.  October was domestic violence awareness month and during October I posted information about the Verizon Wireless HopeLine Program which refurbishes and recylces used wireless phones to raise funds to provide new phones and airtime to domestic violence survivors. I was one of seventeen local bloggers who accepted a challenge from Verizon Wireless to educate the community on domestic violence and the Verizon HopeLine Program. And because of that challenge, Verizon donated $5000 to "Looking For My Sister", a domestic violence organization that helps women in Detroit.

I was invited to attend the check presentation which was held at the Highland Park Verizon Wireless store at 14126 Woodward Ave.  Before the presentation, I met with Regina Farrar, a domestic violence survivor and the office administrator for "Looking For My Sister" to find out a little about the organization.  "Looking For My Sister" provides domestic violence survivors with transitional housing for up 18 months, consulting, support groups, and clothing.  In addition to today's check, Verizon has also helped the shelter by providing assistance "showers" for the residents and Hopeline cell phones.

"Looking For My Sister" is asking for additional community help in this holiday season.  They are looking for individuals to "adopt" families and provide them with holiday gifts.  The adopt a family program runs between December 15th and 17th and gifts are provided to the families during the week of December 19th.

The $5000 check was presented to Ms. Farrar by Kharisman Brown, the Manager of Retail Sales for the Highland Park Verizon Wireless store.  Click here to read the Verizon press release for the Hopeline Blogger Challenge.
