REVIEW: Back-to-School with Clearasil PerfectaWash

After months of acne breakouts, my son is now loving his reflection in the mirror...

The day after Labor Day is the first day of school for most kids, including my son who has really enjoyed his Summer vacation. But one thing he has not enjoyed is changes in his skin.

You see, when my son turned 11 years old, he started having acne breakouts on his forehead. A trip to the doctor told me what I had figured - he was going through early puberty which was causing the breakouts.

Since he was so young, I did not want to use any chemicals on his skin if I didn't have to. So we stopped using oils on his skin and hair and that took care of most of the breakouts. But over the Summer months, the breakouts got worst on his forehead and even spread to the rest of his face. I knew it was time to do something about it when I realized my son was no longer looking in the mirror because he did not like the image that was being reflected back at him.

I went to the store to look at acne products and quickly became overwhelmed by the sheer number. About that time Clearasil contacted me to do a review of their Clearasil PerfectaWash Starter Kit. So after some online reading of the subject of acne, I decided to incorporate the Clearasil PerfectaWash with other natural methods to see if we could stop the breakouts.

We keep the Clearasil PerfectaWash dispenser right by the sink
The good thing about Clearasil PerfectaWash is that is comes in a hands-free dispenser that we keep by our bathroom sink. Since it is sitting there, there is no way to forget to use the product. The dispenser gives you the perfect dose of face wash so there is no wasted product.

I used the Clearasil PerfectaWash on my son's face twice a day - morning and night. The product was gentle on his skin and surprisingly not drying. But I also applied a non oil based moisturizer to his face because I read even acne prone skin should still be moisturized, otherwise the breakouts can become worst. I also made my son drink 60 oz of water everyday to help flush the toxins from his body.

Within a week of using the Clearasil PerfectaWash, my son's face was totally clear of acne with the exception of the middle of his forehead. I did some more online research which suggested incorporating a small amount of maximum strength benzoyl peroxide gel to just the problem area. So I went to Target and bought a $2 store brand 1oz tube of benzoyl peroxide gel. I applied just a tiny dab to my son's problem spot on his forehead twice a day after using the Clearasil PerfectaWash and within a few days, my son's skin was totally free of acne - HOLLA!

It has been a month now that my son has been washing twice daily with the Clearasil PerfectaWash, using the benzoyl peroxide gel on just the problem spots on his forehead, along with drinking lots of water and his breakouts have completely stopped. We are now going to work on getting rid of the acne marks that were left on his forehead. I have done some online reading on natural ways to fade acne scars and I found some simple methods that include baking soda, aloe vera and olive oil.

Now obviously I cannot say that everyone will have the same results that my son had with these products since everyone's skin is different, but I can say that they worked for him. And most importantly, my kid is now loving his reflection in the mirror.

Here are my overall impressions of the Clearasil PerfectaWash Starter Kit -

Pros -
- Starter kit comes with everything you need for 3 months of use - dispenser, 2 refills (100 doses each), and 3 batteries for the dispenser
- The dispenser automatically dispenses the perfect amount of product so there is no waste
- The face wash is non drying to the skin
- The face wash works quickly so you should see results within days
- The starter kit retails for $19.99 and sells for around $15 at Target, but I found it as low as $5.00 + shipping on Amazon.com. But even $15 is a great price for 3 months worth of product.

Cons -
- Be careful where you place the dispenser. If you accidentally get too near the sensor, it can dispense product when you don't want it to.
- It did not work on my son's really problem area so it will not take care of every type of acne breakout.
- As with any topical skin product, you will need to keep using it (and buying it) to keep your skin clear. So if the Clearasil PerfectaWash works for you, stock up if you can find it at a cheap price.
