FREE Admission to Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA) for active military Personnel from Memorial Day to Labor Day

Blue Star Museums program back for a second year

For the second year, the Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA) will offer free general museum admission to active military personnel and their families (military ID holder and five immediate family members) from Memorial Day to Labor Day as part of the Blue Star Museums program.

Blue Star Museums is a partnership of the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), Blue Star Families, and more than 1,300 museums across the United States. Leadership support has been provided by MetLife Foundation through Blue Star Families. Blue Star Families is a national, non-partisan, non-profit network of military families from all ranks and services including guard and reserve, with a mission to support, connect and empower military families.

The DIA offers an array of great art and activities during the summer. The popular exhibition It’s a Zoo in Here! Prints and Drawings of Animals is on view, and on June 29 a new installation of puppets will be on display. From July 6 to August 31, Wednesdays–Fridays from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., visitors can stop by a table called the “Family Fitting Room,” where staff can help customize a visit based on particular interests.

The museum is open until 10 p.m. every Friday, with live music, drawing in the galleries and drop-in art-making workshops. Sundays are geared towards families, with activities such as puppet performances, drop-on workshops, storytelling and artist demonstrations. For details on performances and events, visit www.dia.org.

Hours and Admission Museum hours are 10 a.m.–4 p.m. Wednesdays and Thursdays, 10 a.m.–10 p.m. Fridays, and 10 a.m.–5 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. Admission is $8 for adults, $6 for seniors, $4 for ages 6-17, and free for DIA members. For membership information call 313-833-7971.

Enjoy!
