Living for the (FREE) Labor Day Weekend in Detroit - September 3rd - September 6th

Here is a highlight of the FREE activities you can do this weekend in the metro Detroit area and beyond:


On Friday, the FREE Detroit International Jazz Festival starts in Hart Plaza and goes through Labor Day. Now in its 31st year, the festival takes place over several city blocks in downtown Detroit – from Hart Plaza to Campus Martius – with five stages and 100 acts over four days. It also offers educational activities for adults and children, giant puppets, fireworks, late-night jam sessions, rare opportunities to meet the artists and much more. And it’s all FREE.

The new movie Going the Distance staring Drew Barrymore opens in theaters nationwide.  The bloody interesting movie Machete also opens on Friday, so make sure you read reviews by movie critic Liz Parker before you see them.  If you are seeing them at an AMC Theater, use this coupon to get a  FREE Fountain Drink w/Popcorn purchase this Friday only.  If you are going to an Emagine Theater, then remember to get your  $5 off $5+ concession purchase for voting for them in Vote 4 Best Contest.  Free Food is a wonderful thing!

Friday is also the start of the Arts, Beats & Eats Festival in Royal Oak.  The festival will offer more than 200 performances on ten stages, a highly ranked Juried Fine Arts Show, local restaurants with some of the finest cuisine in metro Detroit.  Arts, Beats & Eats runs through Labor Day, but if you get there on Friday before 5pm, you can get in FREE!

On Saturday night, go to the IKEA in Canton for the their College Night from 8pm-Midnight. They will have Food, Music, Giveaways, Trivia Games and More! At IKEA College Night, you can get advice on what you need for your dorm or off-campus housing. Plus, bring your school ID for a chance to win IKEA gift cards and other great prizes. Don’t miss the great college shopping

Military families can get FREE Admission to Cranbrook in Bloomfield Hills through Labor Day. Any Military personnel who present an active military ID at the front desk of the museum will receive free admission for two adults and two children to either the Institute of Science or Saarinen House tours.

Saturday, take the kids to the FREE Home Depot Kids Workshop from 9am- Noon.  This time, the kids will be making a football display stand.

Saturday is the last day to use this COUPON for BOGO FREE White Castle Sack Savers.  This coupon gets you a lot of food for only $3.

Head down to the Eastern Market on Saturday for the FREE "Taste of the Eastern Market" Cooking Series from 10am to noon. Chef Christian Borden from the Atlas Global Bistro will be doing a cooking demo.  Come on down for your FREE samples!

On Sunday will be the WALK 4 FRIENDSHIP in West Bloomfield which is the Friendship Circle’s 5th annual fundraiser. An estimated 7,000 metro Detroiters will gather in West Bloomfield for a 5k walk in honor of individuals with special needs. There is no cost for registration, participation or food. All participants will receive a Walk4Friendship 2010 T-shirt. The Walk4Friendship donation goal this year is $500,000.

Monday is Labor Day and there will be  FREE Admission to the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn courtesy of Target.  Make sure to go to this FREE event since this will be the last FREE ADMISSION day of 2010 for the Henry Ford Museum.
